The Ribs All Around Baby Jacket and Bonnet is the perfect baby outfit to keep your little girl warm and stylish during the cold weather months. These free baby knit patterns from Red Heart Yarn feature an adorable ribbed embellishment around the neck and shoulders.

Notes: 

Cardigan directions are for size 6 months; changes for sizes 12 months and 18 months are in parentheses.

Bonnet directions are for size Small; changes for sizes Medium and Large are in parentheses.

Intermediate

Knitting Needle Size7 or 4.5 mm, Circular Knitting Needles

Gauge20 sts = 4”; 40 rows = 4” in Garter st. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

Finished SizeFinished Chest: 22 (24, 26½)”. Finished Length: 8¾ (9¾, 10¼)”.

  • RED HEART® “Smoothie™” 3.5 oz (100 g), 218 yd (200 m) balls:
  • Cardigan: 2 balls 4390 White;
  • Bonnet: 1 ball 4390 White
  • Circular Knitting Needles: 4.5mm [US 7] 29”
  • Knitting Needles: 4.5mm [US 7]
  • Spare knitting needle
  • Stitch holders (2)
  • Yarn needle
  • 4 buttons
  • Silk ribbon
  • Silk rosette

Instructions

JACKET: Body

Notes:
Jacket is worked back and forth in rows. Circular needles are used to accommodate large number of stitches. Back and Fronts are worked in one piece to the armholes, then joined with sleeves to work yoke.

  1. With circular needles, cast on 110 (121, 132) sts.

  2. Work even in Garter st (k every row) until piece measures 4¾ (5, 5½)” from beginning, end by working a wrong side row.

Divide for Fronts and Back

  1. K26 (29, 32) sts for Right Front, bind off 6 sts, k46 (51, 56) sts for Back, bind off 6 sts, k26 (29, 32) sts for Left Front.

  2. Place all sts on a spare needle.

Sleeves (make 2)

  1. With knitting needles, cast on 22 (28, 30) sts. 

  2. Begin Garter st and shape sleeve by inc 1 st at beginning and end of every 16th (8th, 10th) row 2 (5, 5) times–26 (38, 40) sts.

  3. Work even until piece measures 4¾ (6, 7)” from beginning, end by working a right side row.

  4. Bind off 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Place remaining 20 (32, 34) sts on holder.

Shape Yoke

With wrong side facing and circular needles, p across sts left waiting on spare needle and holders as follows: 26 (29, 32) sts from Left front, 20 (32, 34) sts from Left Sleeve, 46 (51, 56) sts from Back decreasing 2 (1, 2) sts evenly across, 20 (32, 34) sts from Right Sleeve, 26 (29, 32) sts from Right Front–136 (172, 186) sts.

  1. Row 1 (Right Side): Knit.

  2. Row 2: K8 (9, 8), [k2tog, k5 (6, 6,)] 17 (19, 21) times, k2tog, k7 (9, 8)–118 (152, 164) sts.

  3. Row 3 (Buttonhole Row): P2 (2, 3), yo, p2tog, p to end.

  4. Rows 4 and 5: Knit.

  5. Row 6: Purl.

  6. Row 7: Knit.

  7. Row 8: K7 (8, 7), [k2tog, k4 (5, 5)] 17 (19, 21) times, k2tog, k7 (9, 8)–100 (132, 142) sts.

  8. Rows 9 – 13: Repeat Rows 3 - 7, omitting buttonhole.

  9. Row 14: K7 (8, 7), [k2tog, k3 (4, 4)] 17 (19, 21) times, k2tog, k6 (8, 7)–82 (112, 120) sts.

  10. Rows 15 – 19: Repeat Rows 3 – 7.

  11. Row 20: K6 (7, 6), [k2tog, k2 (3, 3)] 17 (19, 21) times, k2tog, k6 (8, 7)–64 (92, 98) sts.

  12. Rows 21 – 25: Repeat Rows 3 – 7, omitting buttonhole.

  13. Row 26: K6 (7, 6), [k2tog, k1 (2, 2)] 17 (19, 21) times, k2tog, k5 (7, 6)–46 (72, 76) sts.

  14. For sizes 12 and 18 mos only

  15. Rows 27 – 31: Repeat Rows 3 – 7.

  16. Row 32: K6 (5), [k2tog, k1] 19 (21) times, k2tog, k7 (6)–52 (54) sts.

  17. For all sizes

  18. Knit 1 row even.

  19. Next Row (Buttonhole Row): K across row to last 4 (4, 5) sts, k2tog, yo, k2 (2, 3).

  20. Knit 3 rows even. Bind off.

Finishing

  1. Sew sleeve and side seams. Sew on buttons to correspond to buttonholes.

BONNET

With circular needles, cast on 51 (61, 67) sts.

  1. Row 1 (Wrong Side): Knit.

  2. Row 2: Purl.

  3. Rows 3 and 4: Knit.

  4. Row 5: Purl.

  5. Row 6: Knit.

  6. Rows 7 - 12: Repeat Rows 1 – 6.

  7. Work even in Garter st (k every row) until piece measures 3 (3½, 4)” from beginning, end by working a wrong side row.

Back Panel

  1. Bind off 19 (21, 23) sts at beginning of next 2 rows–13 (19, 21) sts. 

  2. Continue even for 3½ (4, 4½)”, end by working a wrong side row. 

  3. Bind off.

Finishing

  1. Fold bonnet in half and sew seams on each side of center back panel.

  2. With right side facing, pick up and k45 (55, 61) sts across lower edge of bonnet. Work 4 rows in Garter st. Bind off. 

  3. Cut 2 lengths silk ribbon and sew one to each side, folding cut end under twice. Attach ribbon rosette as desired.

What a cute outfit. It's so sweet. I read the pattern directions and they are no only very well written but very easy to understand and follow. It's just basic stitches,nothing fancy or hard. I have twin baby grand sons so this is going on my to do list for sure.

Oh, my gosh how sweet is this set? On top of it all..it has a print button I love when I see that how about you? I see this pattern in so many colors I can't wait to get started on the first in a soft mint. Love that color for both sexes. The extra bonus is a super cute little bonnet.
