Crochet a summer wrap to wear on a cool summer night! This free crochet pattern shows you how to make a versatile shawl in just a few easy steps.

Materials:

  • One size US I-9 (5.5mm), or size to obtain gauge
  • Yarn needle
  • Naturally Caron.com Spa (75% Microdenier Acrylic/25% Bamboo; 3 oz/85 g, 251 yds/230 m skein): 9 oz., Shown in: #0005 Ocean Spray.

Instructions:

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Approximately 75”/190.5 cm long x 12”/30.5 cm wide

GAUGE
In double crochet, 14 sts and 7 rows = 4”/10 cm; Gauge is not critical for this project.

STITCHES USED
Chain (ch)
double crochet (dc)
single crochet (sc)
slip stitch (slip st)
yarn over (yo)

SPECIAL TERM
mod-sc (modified single crochet): Working into the side of the previous sc, insert hook under the two vertical bars at the side of the sc, yo and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook.

NOTES
Work Foundation Row loosely.
Shawl is worked in rounds, working on both sides of Foundation Row.
Join each round with a slip st in st indicated.

 

SHAWL

  1. Foundation Row: Chain 2, sc in top loops of second ch from hook (counts as mod-sc), *ch 1, mod-sc in previous sc; repeat from * until 195 mod-sc have been made, ch 1—195 mod-sc.
     
  2. Rnd 1: Working in front loops only along opposite side of Foundation Row, sc in first mod-sc, [ch 3, skip next 2 mod-sc, sc in next mod-sc] 64 times, ch 3, skip last 2 modsc, [sc, ch 3, sc] in beg-ch (first ch-1 of Foundation); continuing around and working in front loops only along opposite edge of Foundation Row, [ch 3, skip next 2 mod-sc, sc in next mod-sc] 65 times, ch 3; join in first sc—132 sc and 132 ch- 3 spaces.
     
  3. Rnd 2: Slip st in first ch-3 space, ch 5 (counts as dc, ch 2), dc in same ch-3 space, (dc, ch 2, dc) in each ch-3 space around (V-st made); join in third ch of beg-ch—132 V-sts.
     
  4. Rnd 3: Slip st in first ch-2 space, ch 1, sc in same ch-2 space, *7 dc in next ch-2 space, sc in next ch-2 space; repeat from * to last ch-2 space, 7 dc in last ch-2 space; join in first sc—66 7-dc groups and 66 sc.
     
  5. Rnd 4: Ch 6 (counts as dc, ch 3 here and throughout), (dc, ch 3, dc) in same sc as join (corner made), *skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip next dc, sc in next dc, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next sc**; repeat from * 30 more times, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip next dc, sc in next dc, (dc, ch 3, dc, ch 3, dc) in next sc, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip next dc, sc in next dc, (dc, ch 3, dc, ch 3, dc) in next sc (corner made); repeat from * to ** 31 times, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip next dc, sc in next dc, (dc, ch 3, dc, ch 3, dc) in next sc (corner made), skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip next dc, sc in next dc; join in third ch of beg-ch.
     
  6. Rnds 5 and 6: Repeat Rnds 2 and 3.

  10. Rnd 11: Repeat Rnd 2. Rnd 12: Slip st in first ch-2 space, ch 1, sc in same ch-2 space, *ch 5, slip st in third ch from hook, ch 2, sc in next ch-2 space; repeat from * to last ch-2 space, ch 5, slip st in third ch from hook, ch 2; join in first sc. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Using yarn needle, weave in all ends. Block lightly.

So I'm trying to pin this pattern to pinterest, and all that shows up is the logo for favecrafts, and if I click it, I end up on the home page for favecrafts. What????? Arrrghhhh, so annoying.

Did anyone ever make a diagram of "mod-sc"? It sounds similar to foundation sc, but not quite the same.
