Old School Americana Cowl

Celebrate America any time with this Old School Americana Cowl.  This cute crocheted cowl will keep you warm during those cooler summer days, and it's great for wearing in the fall and winter months, too.  Easy enough for crochet fans of all skill levels, this infinity scarf is also embellished with sweet buttoned strap to add a little flair and style.  Make this cowl in the colors listed in the pattern or create your own design with your favorite yarn colors.

Old School Americana Cowl

Materials:

  • 10.00mm Crochet Hook
  • 3 Colours of 150g 8ply {DK} Yarn OR Bulky Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry/Wool Needle
  • 4 x 4cm {1.6 Inches} Button

 

Instructions:
Roughly 40 inches around and 16 inches wide (this all depends on how loosely or tightly you crochet).

  1. Start of by taking your cream yarn and 10.00mm crochet hook and make a Slip Knot, then crochet 80 Chains with 2 strands of yarn. {You'll continue using 2 strands of yarn for this entire project. But, if you'd like to use Bulky yarn instead of 8ply yarn, you only need to use 1 strand of yarn}
     
  2. Row 1 Chain 2, skip 2 chains from your hook, then crochet Half Double Crochets all across into every chain.
     
  3. Row 2 - 5 Chain 2, Half Double Crochets into every stitch across.
     
  4. Row 6 - 10 Change to your blue yarn, then Chain 2 and Half Double Crochets into every stitch across.
     
  5. Row 11 - 15 Change to your maroon yarn, then Chain 2 and Half Double Crochets into every stitch across.
     
  6. Row 16 - 20 Change to your cream yarn, then Chain 2 and Half Double Crochets into every stitch across.
     
  7. Row 21 - 25 Change to your blue yarn, then Chain 2 and Half Double Crochets into every stitch across.
     
  8. Row 26 - 30 Change to your maroon yarn, then Chain 2 and Half Double Crochets into every stitch across.
     
  9. When you've completed all the rows, connect the two ends of the scarf together to create a circle {thus a circle scarf} and Slip Stitch them together.
     
  10. Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Button Band

  1. Start of by taking your blue yarn and 10.00mm crochet hook and make a Slip Knot, then crochet 25 Chains with 2 strands of yarn. {You'll continue using 2 strands of yarn for this entire project. But, if you'd like to use Bulky yarn instead of 8ply yarn, you only need to use 1 strand of yarn}
     
  2. Row 1 Chain 2, skip 2 chains from your hook, then crochet Half Double Crochets all across into every chain.
     
  3. Row 2 - 5 Chain 2, Half Double Crochets into every stitch across.
     
  4. When you've completed all the rows, connect the two ends of the band together to create a circle around your scarf. Taking your tapestry needle, sew the two ends of the band together at the back of the scarf.Then taking your button, sew it onto your band.
     
  5. Fasten off, and weave in ends.
