Use light-reflecting thread to tat twinkling stars for gifts or ornaments. These would make lovely Christmas tree ornaments or handmade card embellishments.

Shining Crochet Stars

Materials:

  • 2 tatting shuttles (one areo shuttle and one tatsy shuttle, for example)
  • size 10 or smaller crochet hook for joining if a hook is not on either shuttle
  • Kreinik Medium(#16) Braid in color 032 ( you can also use
  • Fine (#8) Braid in 032 for a more delicate snowflake-star)
  • 20 pearl beads
  • a needle small enough for threading the beads, but large enough to thread with the braid

Instructions:

Thread on the braid the 20 pearl beads. Then wind the larger shuttle. This shuttle will do most of the work. You can either clip threads or unwinde from the spool of thread enough to wind the other shuttle.

* With the shuttle with no beads, make an r of 3ds, 3p sep by 1 ds, 3ds, cl r and rw.
Ch of 3 ds, 3 p sep by 3 ds, 3ds, does not rw. Pick up the shuttle with the beads on and make next ring as follows. On thisnext ring, slip up one bead for each r made.
R of 3ds, J to last p made on the chain, 3ds, add the bead into the p, 3ds, p, 3ds, and cl r.
R of 3ds, j to last r, 3ds, add the bead into the p, 3ds, p, 3ds and cl r.
Repeat the last ring. This makes a cloverleaf. Switch shuttles to the one with no beads.
Ch of 3ds, j to matching p of last r, 3ds, 2p sep by 3ds, 3ds rw.
R of 3ds, j, 3ds, 2 p sep by 3ds, 3ds, cl and rw. Switch shuttles again.
Ch of 3ds, slip a bead into the p, 3ds, Rw and switch shuttles again*
Continue from " to " till you have 5 points to the star. Tie and trim the edges the way you are most comfortable with.

Alternate idea:
Use any color Kreinik Braid and matching beads to make the star a different color. It's beautiful in a light metallic blue!

Hi drhappyfeet 6661378 , we actually have this project listed as Needlecraft. We don't have a tatting category on our site, so we wanted tried to pick a category that was as close to the project as possible. Thanks! - Julia from FaveCrafts

You have this listed as crochet, but it's tatting which is VERY different

I am anxious to try this. At the present time I am looking for bridal garters to tat. Do you have any suggestions? Also would like to know what a areo shuttle is.

An Aero shuttle is a type of tatting shuttle that has a removable bobbin. The other main type of tatting shuttle has a solid post in the center. Either kind of shuttle can be used for any tatting pattern, but some people prefer one type of shuttle over another.

Tatting is really not that hard. I taught myself to needle tat with a book of instructions and it was easy to learn and I love it just as much as crochet! The stuff you can make is very pretty.

These look wonderful. My only trouble is finding out how to join the threads together. None of my book instructions show me exactly how to do it. Is it done the same way as in crochet? I REALLY NEED SOMEONE TO EXPLAIN IT TO ME IN SIMPLE TERMS.

So can you do a tutorial on tatting for those who would like to learn? My grandmother did it years ago, and I wish I had taken the time to learn this skill from her. It is a dying art and unless someone teaches it to oyu, its impossible to do. So please a few tatting tutorials would be greatly appricated. Thank you

I teach tatting for 40 years , i know that is hard learn . Some times i see my students crying . But is only when they start . I would love help you but i don't know if i can for this way

Tatting does not, repeat, does not, equal crochet. Tatting in on versioncan be done with a crochet hook, but it is still tatting, done with tatting stitches, and tatting vocabulary, and if you don't know how to tat, you can't do it. (It can also be done with a needle, but that's another story.) I have been crocheting for nearly 60 years and would love to do tatting, especially with a hook, but I don't know how. It requires being taught how, and trying to follow instructions to make a project without explanations, at least, is foolhardy for all but the luckiest geniuses in craftwork. I thought the stars looked like tatting, but since they were beautiful and in the crochet section, I thought you knew what you were doing. Ha! The closest they come to a hook is maybe in the finishing.

This is a beautiful pattern and looks quite simple to make as long as a person knows how to Tat.. Which I do.. Thanks for sharing this pattern..

This is a very good "tatting" pattern. I have seen on other websites that tatting patterns are often listed with crochet patterns. All the abbreviations are for tatting. Hope this helps someone...

I do know how to crochet but I haven't ever heard or used the shuttle. I haven't even seen the abbreviations that you are using. I like the way the stars do look. If you can help me with this please do. You can reach me at tisa.robare@hotmail.com.
