Knit Socks for the Family

This knitting sock pattern from Bernat Yarns provides sizes for adult men and women, and children 4-6 and 8-10. Create these warm socks for every member of the family with ease. You need a set of double pointed needles in size 8 (5 mm). Use your prefered colors of yarn.

 

Knit Socks for the Family

 

 

Materials:

  • Bernat Berella 4 (Solids:100 g/3.5 oz) or (Ombres 85 g/3 oz)

    Main Color (MC) (10078 Grey Ragg)
    4/6: 1 ball
    8/10: 2 balls
    Ladies: 2 balls
    Mens: 2 balls

Contrast A (08994 Black)
4/6: 1 ball
8/10: 1 ball
Ladies: 1 ball
Mens: 1 ball

  • Set of four size 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) and set of four size 5 mm (U.S. 8) double pointed knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge:
18 sts and 24 rows = 4" [10 cm] with larger needles in stocking st.

Stitch:
SL1K = Slip next st knitwise with yarn in back of work.

Measurements:
To fit foot length
4/6 yrs: 7 1/2" [19 cm]
8/10 yrs: 9"  [23 cm]
Ladies: 10 1/2" [26.5 cm]
Mens: 11" [28 cm]


Pattern:

The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ).

With smaller needles and MC, cast on 28 (32-36-40) sts loosely. Divide st on 3 needles as follows: 10 (10-12-12) sts on first and third needles, 8 (12-12-16) sts on second needle. Join in rnd. Mark first st to indicate beg of rnd.
1st rnd: *K2. P2. Rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep last rnd of (K2. P2) ribbing 4 times; With A -6 times; With MC -4 times; With A -6 times. Break A.
With MC, cont in (K2. P2) ribbing until work from beg measures 5 (6-7-7) ins [12.5 (15-18-18) cm].
Change to larger needles and knit 4 (4-6-6) rnds even.

Make heel:
Slip last 3 (2-3-2) sts from 1st needle onto 2nd needle. Slip first 3 (2-3-2) sts from 3rd needle onto 2nd needle. Knit first 7 (8-9-10) sts from 1st needle onto end of 3rd needle. 14 (16-18-20) sts for heel. Divide 14 (16-18-20) sts on 2nd needle onto 2 needles and leave for instep. Break MC.
1st row: (WS). With A, Sl1. Purl to end of row.
2nd row: With A, *SL1K. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep last 2 rows until heel measures 1¾ (2-2¼-2½) ins [4.5 (5-5.5-6) cm], ending on a 2nd row.

Shape heel:
1st row: P7 (9-11-13). P2tog. P1. Turn.
2nd row: Sl1. K1 (3-5-7). Sl1. K1. psso. K1. Turn.
3rd row: Sl1. P2 (4-6-8). P2tog. P1. Turn.
4th row: Sl1. K3 (5-7-9). Sl1. K1. psso. P1. Turn.
5th row: Sl1. P4 (6-8-10). P2tog. P1. Turn.
6th row: Sl1. K5 (7-9-11). Sl1. K1. psso. K1. 8 (10-12-14) sts. Break A.

With RS facing and MC, pick up and knit 7 (8-9-10) sts along left side of heel. With 2nd needle knit across 14 (16-18-20) sts from instep. With 3rd needle pick up and knit 7 (8-9-10) sts along right side of heel. K4 (5-6-7) sts from heel onto end of 3rd needle. Slip rem 4 (5-6-7) sts from heel onto beg of 1st needle. 36 (42-48-54) sts are now divided as follows: 11 (13-15-17) sts on 1st and 3rd needles, 14 (16-18-20) sts on 2nd needle.

Work in rnds: 1st rnd: 1st needle: Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1. 2nd needle: Knit. 3rd needle: K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to end of needle.
2nd rnd: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds to 28 (32-36-40) sts.

Cont even until foot from pick up row measures 5 (6 1/2-7-7 1/2)" [12.5 (16-18-19) cm]. Break MC.

Shape toe:
1st rnd: 1st needle: With A, knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1. 2nd needle: K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1. 3rd needle: K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to end of needle.
2nd rnd: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds to 12 (16-16-20) sts remain. Knit sts from 1st needle onto 3rd needle. Graft 2 sets of 6 (8-8-10) sts.
