Stripe Tie Dye Technique

Learn how to dye stripes on fabric! Use a sponge to create stripes on a plain shirt or other fabric with tie dye from I Love to Create.

Tie dyeing the classic way with a squeeze bottle and rubber bands is a great deal of fun, but if you're looking for a simpler version of the craft, you can try this tutorial. It's a simple way to dye your clothes and still create a really fun look. If you love stripes, you'll love this project!

Note: Before beginning any tie-dye project, read the instructions for the Tulip One-Step Fashion Dye or Tulip Permanent Fabric Dye.  Refer back to them for standard steps with using dye.

Materials List

  • Fabric to dye, such as cotton T shirts or onesies
  • Plastic tablecloth
  • Tulip One-Step Fashion Dye kit
  • Cardboard or shirtboard
  • Sponge(s)
  • Plastic bowl
  • Plastic wrap
  • Non-bleach laundry detergent

Instructions

Mix Dye

  1. Prewash fabric to remove sizing. Do not use fabric softener or dryer sheets.

  2. Cover work surface with a plastic tablecloth.

  3. Add water to dye bottles. Shake to mix. Pour dye into plastic bowl.

Dip Sponge in Dye

  1. Lay shirt flat on working surface. Insert shirtboard or coated cardboard between layers.

  2. Dip one end of dry sponge in dye.

Create Crisp or Fuzzy Stripes

  1. Wipe dye across dry fabric for a more lined look or wipe across wet fabric for a softer striped look. Use a clean sponge for each color.

  2. When finished painting stripes, cover fabric with plastic. Let set 4 to 6 hours.

  3. Fill washer to large load setting with hottest water suitable for fabric and a small amount of non-bleach laundry detergent. Wash and dry separately.
