How to Tie Dye with Tissue Paper

Discover unique and new ways to get the tie dye look in your crafts! In this tutorial, you'll learn how to tie dye with tissue paper.

You may be wondering, can you tie dye with tissue paper? In order to do so, you need to use a special type of tissue paper called bleeding tissue to achieve this look.

Add color to your paper and fabric using this tissue paper tie dye project from Lynda Heines. Mix and match colors to create your own "bleeding art". You can used the finished fabric or paper swatches in handmade cards, scrapbook layouts, banners, wall decor, and more! Once you've gotten down the basics, you'll have so much fun experimenting with different colors and patterns.

Materials List

  • Bleeding tissue in various colors (regular tissue will not work)
  • Piece of fabric or white watercolor paper (Strathmore 140 pound watercolor paper)
  • Plastic pan or bin
  • Paint brush
  • Iron (if coloring fabric)

Instructions

To Tie Dye Fabric:

  1. Wet the piece of fabric and put it in a plastic pan to keep work area dry.

  2. Place torn pieces of tissue on the fabric, continuing to spray the tissue and tapping with brush.

  3. Let the fabric dry.

  4. Once it is dry, pick the chips of tissue from the fabric.

  5. Iron it and rinse it in cold water in the sink. Let it dry again and reiron. 

To Tie Dye Paper:

  1. Wet the watercolor paper and then add the tissue. Spray and continue to add more of the same color tissue to areas to achieve dark colors.

  2. Let it dry.

  3. BONUS!  You'll be left with all these beautiful pieces of tissue to add to another project!
