Popsicle Stick Crafts For Kids and Adults

July 4, 2015 by FaveCrafts

Remember those Lincoln Logs? Are they even still around anymore (I must be showing my age)? You can stack them as high. I loved building things with my hands. That’s why I became so crafty as an adult. Although, I was never prepared to give up my popsicle stick crafts. They were very much like the Lincoln Logs, only they wouldn’t fall if my sister knocked them down. They always came in a variety of colors, or I got to color them and pattern them how I want to. These days, I use classroom popsicle stick ideas all the time. I have a decorated mason jar activity craft where the sticks have stuff for the kids to do so I don’t hear the, “I’m boooooored.” And like any teacher, I have a jar of their names so random selection is actually random. For a Father’s Day Craft, I would have the children build a house or some kind of building frame, with tool stickers saying “You build me up.” If you want to be the best adult to a child ever, with stick crafts, let them eat a whole box of popsicles to get the sticks themselves. (I suggest you have backups because they get full really quick.)

Popsicle Stick Crafts

Popsicle sticks are a very underrated craft, and that makes me very sad because you can do so much with popsicle stick projects! There are people who make small scale castles and houses with them with clay plaster for a roof. I can’t even make a successful coil pot. The great part about popsicle sticks is that they can be used for home decor or outdoor crafts. I promise you aren’t confined to mere kids’ crafts with these. I did list them, because these are a fun way to help with their motor skills with the glue bottle, but there are some fun cheap decor ideas that you can utilize with this easy craft material for your house and home.

World Release of A New Loom Knitting Product

May 1, 2011 by TheCrochetCrowd

The Brand New Infinity II Loom by D.A. Looms has just been released for sale.

It’s hot off the presses. D.A. Looms (Short for Decor Accents Looms) has just released the brand new Infinity II Loom. The product has undergone a major product design. Only the pegs are moulded, everything else including the plastic support bases are hand cut with precision.

We have seen other ‘S’ Shaped looms on the market, so what makes this one better than the rest?

High Grade Plastic. The base of the loom is a solid 1/2″ thick. It has little flexing.

  1. You can see by the picture that the base exceeds well past where the pegs are fitted into their holes for extra support.
  2. Upon showing this to consumers in person, people are blown away by the weight of this product.
  3. This not a toy and the quality speaks that loudly.
  4. The biggest difference is the ‘S’ Shape in comparison to others on the market. The ‘S’ shape is consistent and round. You will not have any difficulties accessing any pegs.
  5. A design change as moving the pegs out from where they come together at the ends. It was too close before.
  6. The pegs are Nylon. For those who use Serenity, you will know your yarn used to grab onto the plastic and be tough to manipulate. The nylon is so amazing that the yarn easily slides up and down with very little friction. This is an added bonus because it allows your knitting to not tightened up to the point where you are bending hooks or breaking pegs.
  7. The price point of these looms are excellent.

Order your D.A. Looms Infinity II Loom at http://www.Dalooms.com There are also affiliate programs for those who wish to sell these and other assorted looms D.A. Looms has. Each loom is hand crafted to perfection.  Usage of these looms will be added to The Crochet Crowd’s YouTube Video Line Up, absolutely free of course.

AllFreeKnitting.com will be giving one of these looms away in the near future. Stay tuned for further details.

Ask Maria “Prepping Wood For Projects”

June 11, 2010 by Maria

Question

How to you know if you have to prep a wood surface before painting it?

Kevin, CA

Walnut Hollow wood surfaces come prepped. Just add your creativity.

My husband would say you must prep all wood before painting, staining, or sealing, but I’m a little less strict with how much prep really needs to be done. Often if you are purchasing a raw wood item to paint it comes prepped. For example I’ve made clocks and boxes from Walnut Hollow and never had to prep the wood before painting it.

However, you should feel carefully along the edges, sides, top and bottom to make sure the wood is smooth. Any sharp points or edges should be sanded. Once we sand we are going to have some dust and particules that should be removed before we paint or stain. You can use a small vacumn or tack cloth to remove dust, wood particules, or dirt from the wood surface. Sometimes as you run your hand over the wood you can feel the grain. You can smooth the raised grain by simply rubbing it with a scrap of brown paper bag. It’s amazing the difference you’ll see. You can do this even after you have painted, stained or sealed the wood, just gently rub the brown paper bag over the entire surface. Several light coats of paint or sealer give a better finished look than brushing or spraying on one thick coat. Walnut Hollow has a nice guide about which wood to use for specific projects on their website. Good luck, Kevin!

Wood: To Burn or Carve?

June 8, 2009 by FaveCrafts

Call me old-fashioned, but I tend to like the look of wood over more “modern” materials such as steel or plastic. Can you really snuggle up in a steel chair? For me, decorative wood accents with burned or carved designs give the feel of a cozy country home, complete with fire crackling and big dogs lounging about. Maybe that’s just me. We have quite a few new projects, using both woodburning techniques and woodcarving techniques. I can’t decide which I like better.

I just love the look of this Carved Heart and Flowers Box. The design is pretty and delicate, but not old-timey. I can imagine storing my modest jewelry collection in this box.

Then again, I’ve never seen quite such a unique woodburned design as this Quilt Pattern Woodburned Box. The box is colored with “oil pencils” which sound like great fun.

What do you think? Is woodburning or woodcarving the more attractive craft?
