Popsicle Stick Crafts For Kids and Adults

July 4, 2015 by FaveCrafts 2 Comments

Remember those Lincoln Logs? Are they even still around anymore (I must be showing my age)? You can stack them as high. I loved building things with my hands. That’s why I became so crafty as an adult. Although, I was never prepared to give up my popsicle stick crafts. They were very much like the Lincoln Logs, only they wouldn’t fall if my sister knocked them down. They always came in a variety of colors, or I got to color them and pattern them how I want to. These days, I use classroom popsicle stick ideas all the time. I have a decorated mason jar activity craft where the sticks have stuff for the kids to do so I don’t hear the, “I’m boooooored.” And like any teacher, I have a jar of their names so random selection is actually random. For a Father’s Day Craft, I would have the children build a house or some kind of building frame, with tool stickers saying “You build me up.” If you want to be the best adult to a child ever, with stick crafts, let them eat a whole box of popsicles to get the sticks themselves. (I suggest you have backups because they get full really quick.)

Popsicle Stick Crafts

Popsicle sticks are a very underrated craft, and that makes me very sad because you can do so much with popsicle stick projects! There are people who make small scale castles and houses with them with clay plaster for a roof. I can’t even make a successful coil pot. The great part about popsicle sticks is that they can be used for home decor or outdoor crafts. I promise you aren’t confined to mere kids’ crafts with these. I did list them, because these are a fun way to help with their motor skills with the glue bottle, but there are some fun cheap decor ideas that you can utilize with this easy craft material for your house and home.

Link Love: Rustic Fall Crafts

September 4, 2013 by FaveCrafts 2 Comments

Fall is here! Okay, it’s still technically summer, but let’s face it – autumn is everywhere! My neighborhood coffeeshop just unveiled its latest offering, maple lattes, and at this point, Pinterest should be renamed Pumpkin-rest. Frankly, I couldn’t be more excited to put away my summer shorts and pull out my chunky sweaters!

When I think of fall crafts, I immediately imagine a cozy country cottage in the woods. I imagine crunchy dry leaves on the ground, a slight chill in the air, and hollow wooden logs lining my path. In other words, autumn is the most “rustic” time of year. From the slightly unfinished fabrics to the muted colors, fall is all about the quiet calm you find in the woods rather than the bright and shiny colors of the beach. A Country Apple Garland, looks great above a mantel or hanging on a wall. The beige muslin fabric is easy to work with and so appropriate for fall. You can also use jute or hemp for Recycled Decoupage Luminary Jars. It gets dark earlier in the fall, so place a tea light inside each jar and use them to light your front porch. Cork is also a great resource if you want to make a country craft, so save up those empty wine bottles! Use the toppers to create Beaded Wine Cork Keychains. This is a quick and thrifty recycle craft that will help you keep track of your keys.

This fall, take a trip to the country without ever leaving home. Use fabric like burlap, muslin and hemp or recycle materials like cork to create rustic projects. Turn your home into a woodsy cottage and don’t forget the requisite pumpkins!

How To: White Wash Wood Decor or Furniture

February 17, 2010 by FaveCrafts 1 Comment

If you want to achieve a vintage look without spending the money on old relics from the antique store, distressing or whitewashing the items yourself is a good way to do it. White washing gives a wood piece, frame or furniture that beach-esque, vintage feel without looking like a piece from your grandmother’s living room. Not that there’s anything wrong with Grandma’s furniture!

Here’s a few quick steps to achieving the white wash look for a wood frame or piece of furniture:

Materials:

  • Whitewash or pickling stain from craft store
  • Sand Paper
  • Cloth or Rag
  • Brush
  • Wood frame or other wood piece

Steps:

  1. Before you start, try the white wash on a smaller piece of wood or furniture to be sure that the result is desirable on your larger project.
  2. Remove any paint on the surface of your item by rubbing it with sand paper. Make sure you use even pressure and sand it until the surface is smooth.
  3. Using a damp cloth or rag, wipe away any excess dust before beginning the white wash process.
  4. With another rag or a brush, apply the stain to your piece. Don’t be shy, lather it on!
  5. Allow the stain to sink into the piece of wood, and then wipe away any excess stain with a dry cloth.
  6. Let dry for 3-4 hours. After that, if the piece needs an additional coat, apply another one.
  7. After the last coat of stain is applied, let the piece dry for 24 hours before using it.

Here’s an example of what a white wash treatment can do with a blue tinted stain:

Craft Trends: Wood and Metal

Various interior design experts say more homeowners want to include wood and metal in their home décor. I found that insight interesting since we just invested beautiful wood flooring in several rooms of our home. The wood flooring makes the rooms warm and inviting. You can add wood to your home by using wood bowls, wood frames for your wall art, or placing twigs in floral arrangements.

Wood bowls are excellent for showing off collections.

Wood bowls are excellent for showing off collections.

Wood and metal is also emerging as a focal interest in jewelry. Artists are combining the two materials with both high shine and matte finishes. Wood beads are making a comeback both in natural tones and painted. Metal has always been popular in jewelry making with silver and gold the top choices, but look for pewter and bronze to make a statement in pendants and beads.

There are so many ways to manipulate metal from sculpture to soldiering to cutting to texturing. This piece combines several techniques.

Wood and metal can be powerful when used separately and even more powerful when intermingled. Give it a try!
