Plan Ahead: 14 DIY Fall and Winter Wedding Centerpieces

July 30, 2015 by FaveCrafts

Spring and summer are the two biggest seasons for weddings. My sister just got married about three weeks ago, so I know how much planning she had to do in an abnormal amount of time in advance, just to make sure she got everything done before the rush for all the other summer weddings went through. Her maid of honor had the bachelorette party planned and booked about three months ahead, all without a wedding guide or planner. Summer in Missouri is relatively safe weather wise, except for this year when the entire Midwest is practically drowning. Luckily, it was a humid, sunny day, so the worst that happened was that our heels would sink into the mud. We had no problem finding colors and wedding crafts for the summer, but that got me thinking. If most wedding dates are in the spring and summer, what about those fall and winter weddings?

DIY Fall and Winter Wedding Centerpieces

Wedding Centerpieces

It kind of breaks my heart because I would love to have a fall wedding and they seem so under-appreciated. It’s a little cooler outside, so the guys aren’t dying in their tux’s. If you choose to wear satin, then you won’t be suffocating either. If you choose real flowers for pretty bouquets, then they won’t wilt as fast from the heat, and color schemes are a lot more versatile. A huge theme is doing a palette of colors. For instance, I would like to have gray bridesmaid dresses, but have slate blue, lavender, plum, and white throughout all of my DIY decorations. It really is much cheaper to make the little items all by yourself. If you get ahead (like the moment you get engaged), and plan out the items that you are going to craft, it saves a heap. Not to mention the swap and shops that are all over Facebook. That’s how my sister got all of her table decorations! Glass vases from swap and shop, fake flowers from a bulk website (these were the first craft done), and silver ribbon on clearance at my local craft store.

Anyway, I feel like the fall and winter weddings need a little love. They’re just such beautiful seasons of the year. These are some inspiring DIY wedding ideas for the guest tables and the head table. Obviously you can tailor them to your theme and your colors, but I think these wedding centerpieces are just to die for.

These ideas work perfectly for Christmas, birthdays, graduation, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or as thank yous to your ever-devoted bridal party. While many brides give all of their bridesmaids the same gift, personalizing your presents will really show your deep appreciation. How to Make a Save the Date Fabric Banner

August 29, 2011 by FaveCrafts

I recently had my engagement photos taken. I figured using them for our Save the Dates would be a great way to show off the professional photos taken of us while also keeping our Save the Dates relatively quick and easy. I’m planning on using Vistaprint to have a photo made into postcards to send to our guests. I’ve been known to go a little nuts with my craft project ideas, so I wanted to remove the DIY aspect from our Save the Dates as much as possible…

…but of course I had to turn it into a craft project even though I wasn’t actually hand crafting the Save the Dates. Enter the fabric banner! I thought it would be cute to have our date actually in the photograph (because typing it in later would have been too easy). Here’s how I did it:

Here’s what you need:

  • Fabric for the numbers and the background
  • Felt
  • Some sort of string/rope/ribbon to hang it all from
  • Printed numbers
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine (or you can sew by hand)

Here’s what I did:

Step 1: First select a font you like, either one from Microsoft Word or a free font website. I can’t remember which one I chose, sorry! Type out the numbers you need in the font you like, scale them so they’re the right size, and print them out. Tip: Print it as a “draft” or with a lower quality to save ink, because you’ll be discarding the printed numbers later–they only serve as a template.

Step 2: Cut out your number templates, lay them flat against your chosen fabric, and cut them out of the fabric. Note: Make sure you lay the numbers face down on the wrong side of the fabric so that they face the correct way when you’re done.

Step 3: Now cut a rectangle to go with each number. I just measured based on the size of my numbers. You can change the size (or shape) of yours. Have fun with it!

Step 4: Once you have all of your rectangles cut, it’s time to attach the numbers. I decided to use Stitch Witchery so I didn’t have to worry about sewing around all those curves. You can learn how to use fusible fabric tape in this post about making a no-sew hem. I cut the tape to fit in my numbers, laid the tape on the wrong side of each number, set the yellow rectangle on top, and ironed it on.

Step 5: I cut rectangles out of felt that would be attached to the yellow rectangles, just to give the banner some sturdiness. I knew it would be billowing in the breeze, and I wanted it to lie flat in our pics (it ended up billowing much more than I thought it would. If you’re taking your engagement pics by a lake, don’t assume things will billow in the breeze; assume they’ll flail maniacally in the wind gusts). The felt rectangles should be longer than the fabric ones, because you’ll fold the top over to make a loop, which is where you’ll string the ribbon/rope through. Then sew the fabric to the felt.

Step 6: Make the loop I just mentioned (it’s more of a tube, really) and sew it down. Then make your spacers. I chose to cut hearts from my fabric and attach them to felt. I cut two little holes on the top of the hearts for the string to go through. Once you’re done stringing your rope/ribbon through all of the number loops and spacer holes, you might have to tie knots and/or employ your trusty glue gun and/or give up your first born in order to get the spacers to not bunch up under the weight of the numbers.

And here they are in action! Note: Heads have been decapitated to protect the innocent.

How Do You DIY Candle Holders?

June 21, 2011 by FaveCrafts

Have you noticed how much different a room looks when you add the flicker of candle light? Candles make all the difference, don’t they? And they’re cheap too! I like to use candles in my centerpieces at every dinner party and family get together, and of course weddings just wouldn’t be the same without the ambiance that candles bring. But you can’t just stop at candles–you’ve got to make decorative candle holders to go with them! I just put together a list of some cool (and better yet, cheap!) candle holder projects. Check out 19 Cheap Votive Candle Holders. Here are my faves:

These Mercury Glass Candle Holders from Mark Montano are made from odds and ends from a thrift store. I love thrift store crafts! And the finished result is gorgeous:

Another fun way to show off candles is by hanging them up! These Under the Sea Hanging Votive Holders are made out of jars and can lend a nautical vibe to your party:

Since 4th of July is right around the corner, I included these Patriotic Candle Holders in the mix. Wouldn’t these be cute for your 4th of July barbecue?

You can see the rest of my candle holder picks in my article, 19 Cheap Votive Candle Holders. And here are some cute, cheap votive candle holders I found online.

Martha Stewart strikes again! Why is it that everything on Martha’s website is absolutely fabulous? Just check out these lacy votive holders–you’ll be surprised at how they’re made!

These Shabby Chic Rose Votives are made with rose petals from the dollar store–the same petals I used in my petal skirt, in fact!

Check out this post to find not one, not two, but three patterns for crochet jar cozies to use as candle holders. These would make such a great handmade touch at a wedding.

Which one is your favorite? Do you know of any other candle holder projects you’d like to share? Don’t miss 19 Cheap Votive Candle Holders!

Guest Post: Wedding Bombonieres

May 1, 2011 by FaveCrafts

This guest post was written by Melissa Davis for Mi Bride and Groom.

Weddings are the most beautiful and magical events that most people will experience in their lives, and because of this, most want them to be absolutely perfect in every way. Many months and sometimes years are spent in preparation for this big day. There are many special touches that can make a wedding unique and memorable, from the style of the floral arrangements, to the wedding dress and accessories, to the colors and style of the tuxedos and dresses for the bridal party. The options are practically endless, and of course there is no one right way to make all of the countless decisions that come with planning a wedding. In the end, it all comes down to personal tastes, styles, and opinions, as well as advice from close friends and family members. Most couples spend a great deal of time and effort selecting things like musical compositions for the ceremony, seating arrangements for the reception, food and drink items for dinner, and especially which people to invite! It takes even more time and research to decide what types flowers to use and where, depending always on what would look good with the style of the bride’s dress and the color scheme that has been chosen. Another major consideration in all of this planning is, of course, the ever present budget.

However, in almost every case, one of the most thrilling parts of the wedding for the guests are the party favors or wedding bomboniere. There are so many styles and bomboniere ideas and themes to choose from, that there is literally no limit to what these items could be or how they could be presented. A couple that is having a Scottish themed wedding might chose to use black watch plaid to sew little satchels, fill the satchels with gold foil wrapped chocolate coins, then tie them shut with a fun and festive gold ribbon.

Another popular idea is to use miniature champagne glasses, fill them with a candy or other small item, cover them in tulle, and tie a colorful ribbon around the stem of each glass. Still others fill hollow white chocolate swans with chocolate Kisses, or have truffles created with the name of a guest embossed on the side of each one. Any one of these ideas can help dazzle guests, while at the same time providing a classic and elegant display for each place setting at the reception table. There are simply so many different ideas that it can sometimes be extremely difficult to decide on just one!

While sometimes it seems that one must spend a great deal of money to have the very best bomboniere, even those couples who are working with tight budgets can think creatively and produce some fantastic, but still thrifty, gift ideas for the wedding guests. Often, custom creations are even more meaningful to wedding guests than those that are mass purchased. One thing is for sure: no matter what type of bomboniere is eventually chosen, the guests always seem to truly enjoy that particular part of the special day.

DIY Weddings: Handmade Tips and Tricks for A Lovely and Special Day

by Victoria Crowdell

For many people, weddings end up being the happiest day of one’s life. The chance to celebrate a commitment forever in front of friends and family has its supporters and detractors, but the most important part is not necessarily the actual decision to do that, but the party thrown for those who matter. And while plenty of people go all out and spend a ton of cash getting everything from rehearsal dinner goodies to other little tidbits here and there, the fact is that it’s possible for anyone who feels a little bit creative to save a considerable amount of money by just deciding what elements can be handmade, either by the two people getting married or some very kind and thoughtful friends and relatives.

Don’t Bite Off More Than You Can Chew

The first step towards a great handmade wedding is figuring out one’s own skill set and the amount of spare time that can be put towards these types of endeavors. While it might be a great idea for a former fashion design student to start working on a bunch of bridesmaid’s dresses, the fact is that it’s likely going to take more time, more energy, and eventually more money than just choosing a professional to do it instead. So don’t get sucked into a situation where the bride and groom have bitten off more than they can chew!

Handmade Invitations Create a Beautiful First Impression

An easy way to get started on the handmade route is to look at the various ways that invitations can be done these days. Whether it’s heading to the perfect Etsy shop and picking out something screenprinted or letterpressed by an individual artist, or actually making something simple yourself, this is a great way to cut costs and to also make the guests feel a little bit more special, too. After all, it feels considerably more personal to enjoy a handwritten note, so it makes a world of sense to go down that path and make handmade wedding invitations.  If you don’t feel confident enough to do all of the invitations yourself, adding a simple ribbon or self-adhesive pearlescent beads or buttons will give shop-bought invitations that handmade touch.

Homely Comforts

After the invitations, it’s then time to think about all of the other wedding logistics. For those who might have opted for the unconventional location approach to a wedding, meaning an old summer camp or some kind of grassy knoll, it’s worth thinking about the small touches that will make guests feel more at home. Whether it’s bringing furniture from home so people can lounge in the space or simply making sure that there are covered areas in case the sun gets too hot or the rain starts to fall, these tinier details often don’t require an entire wedding planning crew.

Do Them a Favor

It’s always lovely to see what other small touches can be added, from the gift baskets (think handmade items that are also easy to do in big batch, like bottled vanilla extract or baked snacks) to the centerpieces. For someone who is actually quite skilled in these areas, or for those who can enlist friends, it becomes a simple way to get a very complicated job done.  Letting guests take away something that you’ve made yourself is a lovely way to give them a personal reminder of your special day.
