52 Boho Crafts for Festival Season

May 31, 2016 by FaveCrafts

Summertime means festivals, and festivals mean a variety of unique sights and sounds. People often show off their personal style during Coachella and other music and arts festivals. This summer, many folks are choosing to go boho with their wardrobe.

52 Boho Crafts for Festival Season

52 Boho Crafts for Festival Season

What is boho, you ask? When I think of the word “boho,” I think of the way a stream moves: free-flowing and breezy. Bohemian clothing often includes loose-fitting tops and lightweight skirts made from organic fabrics to be mindful of the environment. It also tends to include a lot of jewelry and embellishments.

Not surprisingly, the Bohemian style originated in France. Pier 1 Imports describes it this way: “Popularized in Revolutionary France, the Bohemians expressed their creativity in the way they lived and looked. Discover a world of damask, paisley, and other patterns. Dive into a field of color and uncover global accents that express your one-of-a-kind style.”

In America, the Bohemian style went big during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Fashion icons like Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, and Cher popularized the hippie, free-spirited look with their flowing peasant tops and layers of beaded accessories.

Taking a cue from these icons, I’ve compiled a list of 52 Boho Crafts for Festival Season that would be perfect for you to make and wear this summer. Check it out below and get started crafting!

5 To Dye For DIY Tie Dye Designs

July 9, 2015 by FaveCrafts

Even though fashion trends go in and out of style so quickly, they always seem to circle back around. It was only five years ago that big hair made its way back into our lives with backcombing, and Peter Pan collars are reminiscent of the 50s. The one style that remains constant is tie dye. That easy craft is always a great go-to because of its bright colors and the creative possibilities. It’s too much fun to make your own tie dye designs for you and your family. This is a great summer project that will get you outside and having fun with your family.

What I love most about tie dying is that you can make up whatever method you want to achieve the look you want! It’s also a great upcycling craft to revamp old t-shirts, shoes or baby clothes. They give a rich color and a little extra brightness in your life (especially with this wet summer that we have been having!). These are the best tie dye techniques that you or your kids can do! They’re simple designs and unforgettable methods that will have you dye everything you have. Try the classic tie dye swirl technique, or attempt a new salt-resistant method; whatever you choose to do, make sure you wear gloves so that you won’t become your project!

You and your child will love making this almost as much as you will love wearing it around town. Now you don’t have to worry about wearing the same shirt as someone else.

This classic swirl tie dye technique is the standard method for making tie dye shirts and apparel. You will adore this easy tutorial on how to create the perfect psychedelic t-shirt.

This sounds like a complicated process, but I promise that it is so simple. Similar to a watercolor salt technique, the salt soaks up the dye to give a stippled texture to your apparel. It is easier to make isolated designs by sprinkling the salt in a more concentrated area. I’m super excited to try this one out!

If you’re not into patterns, then try this unique, personalized, sponge technique that gives you the freedom to create whatever design you want. It would be great to try an ombre tie dye with it!

HOO Will Love These DIY Owl Crafts and Recipes?

June 19, 2015 by FaveCrafts

When I was a kid, there was an owl’s nest outside my window in the tree. Owls are nocturnal. They hoot incredibly loud at night, and they’re territorial. Those things would screech with so much hostility that I ended up keeping my blinds and windows closed for nearly two years. When Dad finally knocked down the nest and cut off the branch, there was a celebration in my room. Tea and candy for all! Before you get PETA on me, the branch was growing towards the house, and had been weighed down in an ice storm, and the owls had left the premises. Thank the Lord. Lately, I’ve been noticing a chic trend of people wearing cute owl jewelery and having neutral owl nurseries. Some of this DIY statement jewelry has had gaudy, detailed owls with their wings spread wide across the collar bone or is a simple, geometric basic of accenting a baby’s room. No matter what you use it for, you’re going to love these easy owl crafts.

HOO Will Love These DIY Owl Crafts and Recipes?

Owl CakeAs much of a pain they were in real life, the owl trend that is creeping in throughout life is actually adorable. I may or may not have some owl jewelry… With their geometric design and simplistic design, owls are a symbol of wisdom, nighttime. The Greek goddess Athena was known to have an owl as her symbol! Do as the Romans do, right? (Except Greek).

Especially with owl creativity, they are a minimalist piece that work for free jewelry projects, easy crafts, and easy recipes.

This owl cake design is the cutest cake ever. It uses two whole boxes of cake that will definitely feed the crowd that will be lining up to see this creative cake design. It’s chocolate “feathers” look just like the real thing. It uses chocolate devil’s food cake, a homemade Nutella frosting, and Oreos for the body, feathers, and eyes. Your friends and family will love this easy cake recipe that is great for any occasion. Owl or woodsy-themed nursery or party? This will go with any of your party decor.

Sewing Crafts For Decorating Your Space

When you have a case of the blahs, it’s nice to add a little taste of color to your space. Believe it or not, that single addition can really boost your mood. Add a sewn creation to your kitchen or living room and reap the rewards. Additionally, you can create more functional items like pillows and use them to decorate your home. If you aren’t ready to make a change, you can sew any of these items and give them as gifts. A hostess or friend will absolutely love the finished product.

Sewing Patterns for Bags

It sounds like a cliche to say that bags come in so many shapes and sizes, but it’s actually true! Check out the projects in this eBook and see what we mean. You’ll find patterns for everything from tiny clutches to oversized carriers for sleeping bags. One thing you can count on, though, is that all of these projects are perfect for beginners and so useful. These aren’t the kind of handmade items that you create and stick on a shelf. The Men’s Winter Hat is warm and cozy but not over-the-top, so guys won’t be embarrassed to wear this hat on a cold day. Link Love: Put a Hood On It

October 31, 2013 by FaveCrafts

I am always cold. In fact, I’m one of those people that turns on the heat when it’s 75 degrees outside . I know, I know – I’m wasting precious resources. That said, I can’t help the fact that I’m always just a bit chilly! After Labor Day, you can generally find me with a scarf around my neck and Uggs on my feet. Take it or leave it, that’s just me!

One trend I’m noticing in the crafting world and beyond is hoods. Hoods keep your ears warm and protect you from chaffed, dry skin when it’s extra windy. Is there anything worse than being caught outside with exposed ears on a freezing afternoon? A Crochet Convertible Hood isn’t complicated to make and only requires two skeins of yarn. This scarf is so easy to customize- you can pull up the back or leave the back down and wear it as a normal cowl. The same can be said for the Crochet Cowl Hood, which is made in almost the exact same way. The yarn needed for this project is a little bit heavier, so you will want to wear it on a chilly winter day. You can also make a Hooded Scarf and wrap it around your neck before heading out the door. If you’re up for a challenge, make a hooded sweater! I particularly like the basic Hooded Sweater Crochet Pattern because it isn’t an overwhelming design. This is a great piece to throw on and wear all day.

Before you head out into the cold this winter, be sure to grab one of these handmade designs so you can stay warm on the go. Kids and adults alike can rock a cool, warm hood all season long. Add a hood to a t-shirt, sweater, scarf or cowl. There are so many possibilities and ways to stay warm during even the coldest winter months.

  1. DIY Hooded Cloak from Grey Luster Girl
  2. Cowl Neck Poncho from Mollytov
  3. Monster Hoods from Doodle Craft
  4. Minion Hooded Towel from Crazy Little Projects
  5. Hooded Sweatshirt Scarves from Today’s Nest
  6. Hooded Toddler Crochet Cape from Craftsmumship
  7. DIY Kimono Jacket + Hood from Pretty Quirky Pants
  8. Hooded Scarf from My Poppet
  9. Hooded Batman Shirt from Corvus Tristis

5 Creative Ways to Stay Warm this Winter

October 29, 2013 by AllFreeSewing

Snuggly Christmas Character Rice BagsWe’re halfway through October, and you know what that means: Winter is coming! It’s time to break out the big duvet blankets and heavy crocheted sweaters. Personally, I’m looking forward to finally having an excuse to drink hot chocolate every day.

Probably my favorite thing about winter is figuring out new ways to keep warm (hence all the hot chocolate). As I was trolling through the Winter Projects category on AllFreeSewing to learn how to sew easy projects to keep cozy, I realized that we had some super creative, fun projects that totally deserve their own blog post. So, whether it’s a DIY scarf, a homemade heating pad, or a free fleece hat pattern, I present the most creative ways to keep warm that the internet has to offer.

Hats You Will Love

Keep those ears covered!

Whatever your style, it’s important to keep your ears warm and toasty this season. If you’re the type that loves cutesy headgear, then the Adorable Owl Fleece Hat is perfect for you.

But if you’re of the New York hipster variety, try the Faux Fur Floppy Ears Hat, which will keep you cozy while reminding everyone that you wore hilarious hairy hats before they were cool.

And of course, everyone will look cute as a bug in the Fleece Halloween Ladybug Hat, which can be used as part of a costume or just a fun twist on typical fleece beanies!

If you like these, check out 17 Sewing Tutorials to Make Hats You Will Love!

The Snuggie 2.0

Red Riding Hood Cape TutorialWinter capes are seriously underrated. They’re super warm, snuggly, and comfy—it’s like wearing a blanket around all day. Who says capes are only for Halloween? Make one of these awesome DIY cape patterns and make everywhere feel like your cuddled up on the couch!

I love the Enchanted Forest Fashion Cape for its over-sized sleeves and warm hood, but the striking Red Riding Hood Cape will definitely get you noticed. Of course, if you’re not into capes, winter is also the season for sweatshirts like the DIY Basketweave Hoodie, or the adorable Dinosaur Hoodie for kids who haven’t given up on the dream of growing up to be a T-Rex.

 Rice Bags and Hand Warmers

Keep It Cozy Rice PadNothing is cozier in the middle of winter than cuddling up with a warm homemade rice bag. Bring a taste of Paris to your house with the La Petite Tour Eiffel Rice Bag or snuggle up to Santa with a Snuggle Christmas Character Rice Bag.

For a smaller hand warmer that fits into your gloves, make some DIY Flannel Hand Warmers to keep your hands feeling great all day.

Halloween How-To: Little Angel Costume

October 20, 2013 by FaveCrafts

This tutorial is brought to you by Latrice Murphy from Any Occasion.

If you’re like me and have kids, you get a little sticker shock from the price of Halloween costumes. Luckily, my kids have a crafty mom, who will attempt to DIY just about anything for a good price. This year, my daughter said she wanted to be an angel. I went online, researched other ideas and pulled a few thing together very quickly to come up with my DIY angel costume.

Price Breakdown:

  • Tulle (10 yards on sale 40% off = $9)
  • Headband for waistband (Free- from my stash)
  • Wire hangers (Free from my cleaners)
  • White long sleeve t-shirt ($6 Target, but it will get worn a lot)
  • Shoes ($6 from Wal-Mart, but will get worn a lot)
  • Feather Boa ($3 after 40% off)
  • Tights ($3 from Target, but will get worn more)

Total cost- $27 (I bought items I knew would get worn for the rest of the school year, so my cost is actually lower if you think of it that way)

Other Materials:

costumes5

  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Doilies or coffee filters
  • Glitter
  • Mod Podge
  • Wire snips
  • Adhesive tape
  • Duct tape

To Make the Wings and Halo:

First, you need to snip the curved hanger part off and duct tape the straight parts together. After that, you’ll want to take apart a third hanger and create a halo going perpendicular to the where you attached the wings together.

costumes4

Next, you want to cover the wings with the doilies using a adhesive tape runner. I folded mine mostly in half and filled in.

costumes8

Next up, you want to glitter those wings by brushing them lightly with Mod Podge and shaking white shimmery glitter all over. I did this part outdoors.

costumes6

To finish the wings up, use your hot glue gun to adhere the feather boa along the edge and around the halo. Take your time and don’t burn yourself like I did. This is what the finished wings and halo will look like.

costumes7

To Make the Skirt:

Cut your tulle down to 3” wide pieces and measure how long you want them to be. You will be able to trim later as well once the child tries it on.

costumes1

Tie the pieces of tulle through the openings in the headband all around. We ended up with three rows to make a nice full skirt. You can add as much or as little as you would like.

costumes3

Trim up the ends to the height of the child after they’ve tried it on. This is what the finished skirt will look like.

Add tights, shoes and a t-shirt and you’re done. It took me about two hours to complete this project, but my daughter loves it and can’t wait to wear it this Halloween and use it for dress up at home. Try something fun today and make this year’s Halloween even more special.
