April 9, 2014 by FaveCrafts 2 Comments

thrifty-wall-decorationsI don’t know about you, but I can’t stand having white walls in my house.  To me, a white wall is just screaming for bright paint, a colorful picture, or some clever and creative wall art to help spruce it up…and lucky for you, I’ve gathered 12 of my all-time favorite thrifty wall decorations to share with you as you begin your spring cleaning or home redecorating!

From the kitchen to the bathroom, the bedroom to the living room, these thrifty wall decorations use toilet paper roll tubes, dollar store finds, scrapbook paper, recycled magazines and so much more to create simply stunning and unique wall art.  This Scrabble Wall Art, for example, would be great for a living room or craft room.  Show off words that are important to you or that motivate you…or use the members of your family to create a really cool and unique wall piece.

I also love this Mosaic Wall Art.  Great for decorating the space above your headboard, this wall decoration is made using a variety of 12×12 scrapbook papers…so not only is it easy on your walls, but it’s also easy on your budget!  This is also a great way to decorate a rented apartment or a dorm room.

Trend Alert: Make Your Own Mustache Wall Hanging

October 30, 2013 by FaveCrafts 5 Comments

This tutorial is brought to you by Latrice Murphy from Any Occasion.

Mustaches have taken over just about every aspect of our lives and can be found in home decor designs and on clothing, accessories and more. My daughter and her friends are totally obsessed, so when she was invited to a mustache-themed party, I knew I had to create something fun and unique for the birthday girl. This fun piece will make great wall hanging .

Materials:

  • Paper (I got mine from Paper Source)
  • Chipboard letter
  • Chipboard mustache
  • Glitter
  • Mod Podge
  • Foam brush
  • Felt
  • Ribbon
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors
  • X-Acto Knife
  • Bowl (optional)
  • Sandpaper (optional)

Instructions:

Start by covering the mustache with Mod Podge and placing it on the paper. Rub it flat to get rid of any bubbles.

Next, you’ll use your X-Acto Knife and scissors to trim around the edges. Mine was tricky since it was a curvy mustache. I used a small piece of sandpaper to clean up the edges and inside the curves.

After the edges are all cleaned up and smooth, you can now Mod Podge over the top of the paper. This seals it and makes it look finished.

While the mustache is drying you can now glitter your letter. Using the same method of gluing you’ll brush on Mod Podge and glitter it into a bowl to catch your extra.

Figure out your placement of the letter and you can attach it with the hot glue gun.

Turn your mustache over and hot glue your ribbon on as well. Then, using the felt, cut two small rectangles to hot glue over the ribbon ends. This makes it look clean on the back.

There are so many shapes out there with which you can do this. I’m so excited to give this as a gift and see my daughter’s friend’s reaction. It truly is a fun customized piece that any kid would love to get. I can’t wait to make more. Christmas is just around the corner!

New Pattern Monday: Homemade Home Dec Extravaganza!

What good is a craft if you can’t use it for something? Wearable crafts stand in for boring store-bought fashion, crocheted afghans keep you warm in front of the tube, and homemade cards can be given to friends on special occasions.

Similarly, crafts that double as home decor can personalize your home on the cheap. On FaveCrafts.com last week, we put up some great new home decorating craft projects to try, all of which use recycled materials or supplies you already have in your stash.

Polka Dot Tissue Lantern: Embellish a paper lantern with tissue paper scraps cut into circles. The tissue paper is translucent, which allows the light from the lamp to glow warmly through the polka dots.

Polka Dot Tissue Lamp

Mosaic Wall: Never has a home decorating idea been this easy–just adhere extra scrapbook paper or card stock to your wall with glue dots to add some personality to your room.

Mosaic Wall

Paper Graffiti Lamp: Who uses phone books anymore now that we have the internet? No one, unless they’re making this edgy lamp. Rip phone book pages into strips to embellish a plain lamp shade.

Decorate with Me

Finally! It’s happening! I’ve been waiting such a long time for this. My fiance and I finally bought our first house together, well actually it’s a townhouse, but still. I’m so excited to finally have my own place and decorate with my taste and our paintings. Living at home with my mom isn’t bad, but it’s all her things, and now it’s our turn! With that said, what am I going to do? There’s so many possibilities for every room. I came across this really cute green and maroon wall art. Right now our bedroom is like a blueish purple color, so I might have to play around with this craft and try it with different colors, but I love the style and design it has.

I also really like candles and modern art, so when I saw this candle cube I thought where can I put this? I almost think it would look really cute in the bathroom, after all, it’s always good to have something nice smelling in there. My bathroom is a light blue color, where would you put this candle cube?
