14 DIY Recycled Crafts That Will Help The Earth

April 15, 2015 by Tanner Bell

I just love it when I can take something from around my house that might normally end up in the trash and make it into something beautiful or useful.  It’s not only economical but it helps the environment too!  Earth Day is coming up but let’s find ways to take care of the earth every single day. Recycling items we would normally toss away or items we no longer have a use for (at least as they are now) is a great way to start.

DIY Recycled Crafts

Paper towel rolls, bottle caps, old magazines, cereal boxes, soda cans…the possibilities are endless. Sometimes it’s just a matter of trying to look at the item differently. Instead of seeing it as trash, look at it as a chance to be creative and think outside the box. And if you’re stumped for ideas, don’t worry. I’ve gathered 14 of my favorite craft projects using recycled items together here for you.

There are some great crafts here for kids and teens like the tin can wind chimes, soda can tab belt, and the t-shirt shag rug. That sumo wrestler plastic bottle bowling set is adorable!  I just love the soda can camera and the honey bear vases myself. They are so unique and creative!  They would both make great accent pieces in any room.  But don’t think you can’t make crafty projects using recycled materials for adults too. Check out the coiled magazine bowl and DIY desk organizer for starters.

2.Coiled magazine bowl from Creative Cynchronicity

11.Tin Can Wind Chimes from Design Dazzle
12.Egg Carton Lamp from AllYou
13.Paper Tube Japanese Flying Carp from Squirrelly Minds
14. Arizona Tea Soda Can Camera from Perfectly Unperfect Life

The options are limitless. You can use recycled materials to make jewelry and fashion, home décor pieces, items to help you get organized and even toys.

Which of these recycled material crafts is your favorite? Go raid your recycling bin and see what you can make!

You Made That Out of Paper? Thrifty Paper Christmas Crafts

May 21, 2013 by AllFreeChristmasCrafts

Flower Bustle OrnamentLet’s face it: Christmas can be pricey. But with Christmas months away, this may not be on your mind. Why not save yourself the mid-December anxiety of Christmas crafting and start brainstorming thrifty ideas now?

After much thought I realized that one of the most available materials for crafting is paper. There is tons of paper everywhere. Whether you stock up on scrapbook prints or happen to save tons of flyers, that paper can be put to use on homemade Christmas decorations. This year, don’t procrastinate, paper craft instead.

How to Make Paper Ornaments

Ice Cream Paper OrnamentFor many of you, making Christmas ornaments is a holiday tradition. There is an irksome side effect to it, though. Most of the time the supplies you buy make a mess. On top of this, there are usually annoying leftover paints and blank ornaments that you feel too guilty to toss. This can be easily avoided by making paper ornaments. These aren’t just cut-outs of Santa; these are dimensional designs that you can make.

Sheet Paper Fan Christmas OrnamentsI’ve chosen ornaments that you can practice now without feeling overwhelmed by the Christmas spirit. This Flower Bustle Ornament differs from conventional ornaments with its spherical shape and floral features. This is certain to add some freshness to your tree. If you have a sweet tooth, you can also try your hand at these Easy Paper Ice Cream Ornaments. The subject of these hanging homemade decorations contrasts nicely to winter. Maybe it’s a more traditional Christmas look you’re after; these Sheet Paper Fan Christmas Ornaments from Yellow Bliss Road are a delightful decoration. You’ll be singing praises over these DIY paper ornaments.

More Paper Crafts for Christmas

You may be done with ornaments for the time being. If so, there are other paper Christmas crafts that go beyond the norm and do it inexpensively. Again, I’ve chosen evergreen designs, so you have no excuse not to craft these gorgeous projects now!

Handmade Crepe Paper Rose CenterpiecesHandmade Crepe Paper Rose Centerpieces are stunning. Choose your desired color scheme when crafting these balls of beauty and get to work. If you don’t craft these centerpieces because they are gorgeous, at least do it to provide a conversation piece during that Christmas family dinner. Every family reunion needs a conversational safe haven…

Awesome Animal BoxesInstead of the same old wrapping this year, make DIY gift boxes like these Awesome Animal Boxes. Have you ever seen anything so outrageous? This box alone is enough of a gift; you might even get away with leaving it empty.

Glittery Newspaper TreeNewspapers are bound to pile up in your home or around you. Despite living in a digitized age, there is an everlasting charm about the printed word. You can use old newspapers to create a Glittery Newspaper Tree. Recycled crafts like this one retain a vintage charm thanks to the inky words.

Hopefully you feel inspired to go thrifty this year with recycled paper crafts. There are endless possibilities when it comes to paper Christmas crafts that will save you a bundle in cash. As each day brings you closer to Christmas, craft something nifty and thrifty. It won’t cost you a cent; the designs are on us!

What’s the weirdest paper craft you’ve ever made?

AllFreeChristmasCrafts Giveaway: The Crafty Chica Collection

April 4, 2013 by AllFreeChristmasCrafts

The editors at AllFreeChristmasCrafts know that Christmas isn’t the only thing that can be celebrated throughout the year, which is why Kathy Cano Murillo’s book The Crafty Chica Collection couldn’t have come at a better time. You can welcome spring with the brightest and boldest of colors, all with a Latin flavor that many crafters haven’t experienced before.

With five different categories of crafting, this collection of Latin inspired crafts can find their way into your home in so many ways. Even more exciting, this book is all about thrifty and creative crafting, so you’ll be learning to incorporate your everyday household items into your projects, making them all the more personal.

The Crafty Chica Collection

One of my personal favorites in this book is the “Tissue Flower Topiary” (pg. 70), which represents all that’s so fantastic about this book. Cano Murillo transforms tissue paper and a few common craft materials into an explosion of warm colors that you’ll want to decorate any room in your home during the springtime. The author’s expertise really shows through, and crafters will benefit from all of the tips and tricks included within the pages of this book. Many of these projects are perfect for parties, special holidays, or just when your home decor needs a bit of sprucing up.

If you want your crafting to really come to life this spring, nothing will make quite as memorable impression as any of the projects included in The Crafty Chica Collection. All of us at AllFreeChristmasCrafts want to make sure we give readers the opportunity to get their own copy, which is why we’re giving away one on our site! Enter by April 9th to win a copy of The Crafty Chica Collection with over 100 pages worth of one-of-a-kind tutorials.

6 Thrifty and Cheap Valentine’s Day Crafts

February 9, 2012 by FaveCrafts

Every junk drawer probably has these staples:  an old map, some glass bottles, mate-less socks, worn out crayons, old thread spools, and maybe even some leftover plastic cups from a recent football party.  If you’ve got one or more of these, you can easily make one of these six thrifty Valentine’s Day crafts, perfect for last minute Valentine’s Day décor and inexpensive Valentine’s Day gifts.  This year show your love with these cute handmade projects that can easily be made with items you already have in your home!

When it comes to romantic gifts, nothing beats something that’s handmade.  Whether it’s a home-cooked meal or a scrapbook of fond memories, taking the extra step to make something for your loved one goes a long way.  This Custom Couple Silhouette project would be a great Valentine’s Day gift for your significant other.  A few pictures and some scrap paper is all it takes to make this project…and the recipient is sure to love it!

For those who hosted football parties this past weekend, I’m sure you have plenty of glass bottles and plastic cups taking up room in your recycle bin.  Well, with a quick wash, bottles and cups can be transformed into great Valentine’s Day décor!  These Love Letter Bottles make unique Valentine gifts and are fun crafts to do with your loved one.  As for those red plastic cups, this Red Plastic Cup Heart Garland is an easy and fun way to add a vintage touch to your home.  Decorate each heart to your liking, but lace looks beautiful against the red!

Most households probably have a collection of mate-less socks in their laundry room or junk box.  Instead of waiting for the long lost mate to show itself, why not turn those socks into these cute Bunny Sock Puppets?  Inexpensive Valentine’s Day ideas like this are great for families to do together, or would be a fun project for the kids to work on when mom and dad grab dinner and a movie!

When I was in young, I used to love Valentine’s Day parties at school!  It was so fun to hand out little cards to everyone in the class!  This year, help your kids make these Melted Crayon Hearts Valentines for their class!  Not only will you use up those cracked and broken crayons, but kids will love this functional and fun Valentine!

Sometimes a little love note can go a long way, and this Vintage Spool Valentine is the perfect way to show your love and appreciation.  Simply write a note, song, or poem to your loved one and wrap it around the spool.  Tie it with a string and toss it in your Valentine’s lunch bag, purse, or briefcase.  It’s a small gesture that they’re sure to love!

So with Valentine’s Day a mere week away, crunch time has begun!  There’s no need to run to the store for last minute flowers and expired chocolate…you can make something much more meaningful with items you have laying around the house…and chances are your Valentine will just love it!
