Hang Out with FaveCrafts and Make a Card!

June 29, 2012 by FaveCrafts 1 Comment

Are you on Google+? It’s still relatively new and relatively small and we know that many people are reluctant to use it, but it does have some cool features, like the option to “hang out” with all your Google+ friends! And that’s exactly what we want to do!

A hang out is basically just a video conference between yourself and any Google+ friends that want join you! If you’ve never joined in on one, there’s no better time than now! On June 29th at 1pm CST FaveCrafts will be hanging out and making a fun card with stamps from Paper Smooches.

Not sure what to do or how to get started? Check out this article from our friends at Creative Income on How to Join a Google+ Hangout! Since it’s our first time hosting, we’ll hope you’ll bear with us if we have to stumble through a bit. Here’s how it will work:

  • Add us to your circle on Google+ and we’ll add you back!
  • At 1pm CST on June 29th, we’ll set up a hang out for all of you in our circles so watch your newsfeed!
  • Once you see the logo pop-up that says the hang out has started, join in!
  • As much as we would love to chat with all of you, there is a 10 person limit so we’ll have to run it on a first come first served basis.
You are welcome to make the card with me or just watch and make one later! Here is what you will need:
Supplies
  • Paper Smooches Party Posse Clear Stamps
  • Black Dye Ink
  • Black, Green, and Orange Cardstock
  • Patterned Paper
  • Ribbon
  • White Gel Pen
  • Adhesive
  • Dimensional adhesive, such as Dimensional Mod Podge or Glossy Accents
  • Corner rounder
  • Thumbtack or Paper Piercing Tool

Full instructions will be posted on FaveCrafts.com after the Google+ hang out!

Hope to see you there!
Add yourself to our link list! We can’t wait to see all your friendly faces!

Finding Our Bliss in Nashville + Swag Bag Giveaway!

February 28, 2012 by FaveCrafts 234 Comments

Have any of you heard of the BlissDom conference before?  If you haven’t, let me quickly fill you in, because it’s awesome!  BlissDom is a conference that’s all about empowering women bloggers.  It’s in its fifth year and has grown to include more than 750 people from all over the country.  This past weekend Kirsten, the editor of AllFreeSewing and I (representing AllFreeHolidayCrafts) had the opportunity to experience BlissDom and we were amazed by all the inspiring people we met.  We got to network with a bunch of amazingly cool craft and food bloggers, learn from successful entrepreneurs like author Jon Acuff and social media guru Melanie Nelson, and have some fun in Nashville!

Since I love pictures, and I know you do too, I thought I’d give you a sneak peek inside our experience at the conference.  First up, the location!

We stayed at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, which is a city unto itself.  Seriously, this hotel had jungle-like plant life, waterfalls and even a boat that floated through the main lobby area:

After getting over the initial shock that this jungle paradise would be our home for the next two days, Kirsten and I started attending sessions where we learned about everything from Facebook to blogging to how to live creatively and believe in yourself. If it sounds very “Oprah,” it was — and in the best way possible. There’s no way you could have left BlissDom without feeling empowered to make positive changes in your life, whether personal or professional or both.

Interspersed with our seminars, we had time to chat with a bunch of other conference attendees. Everyone was so nice and friendly and I was amazed by the amount of creativity and passion packed into one place!  We especially enjoyed making new connections with a few bloggers in particular.  Pop over to these sites if you get a minute – I promise you’ll be glad you did!

  • Maggie from Gussy Sews – A wonderful resource for sewists and anyone who likes cute things!
  • Jennifer from Threaded Together – A blog run by two sisters, their mom, sister-in-law and some friends. They have great craft ideas and tutorials!
  • Allison from House of Hepworths – A great resource for home decor and DIY tutorials; I especially love her Dollar Store section!
  • Angela from Unexpected Elegance – A really cool blog with ideas for upcycled and thrifty home decor.
  • Meggie from Hoosier Farm Babe – A fun blog with delicious recipes inspired by life on the farm.

There were so many amazing women at this conference, I’m just sad we weren’t able to meet all 750 of them!

We did make one more special friend while attending BlissDom.  Are you ready for this?  We met…

The Lorax!  With the upcoming release of the Dr. Seuss inspired movie, this orange mustachioed guy was roaming the halls of the conference, taking pictures with eager fans and we were lucky enough to get to pose with him!  Isn’t he cute?

Stay tuned for more snapshots of our time at BlissDom (trust me, there’s some other special stuff we want to share with you!), but for now I’ll leave you with this: We’re having a special giveaway just for you, our loyal readers!

One lucky reader (chosen at random) will win a swag bag full of fun items we picked up while at BlissDom:

This awesome swag bag includes:

  • A Blooming Expressions flower from Hallmark
  • A “People Like Me” Facebook t-shirt
  • A recipe organizer
  • A fashionable wristlet
  • Shampoo and conditioner from VO5
  • An official “BlissDom” silver necklace
  • A cute breakfast bowl
  • An airplane neck pillow
  • A Blissdom canvas tote bag
  • Coupons
  • And so much more!

How to Enter the Giveaway:

All you need to do is leave a comment on this post telling us where you get your craft inspiration from. It could be a person you know, a blog you read, magazines, your kids… anything really!

The Details:

1. Contest ends on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 11:59 p.m.

2. Open to anyone 18+ in US and Canada only.

3. Only one entry per person please.

4. Winner will be announced right here on the blog on Friday, March 2, 2012.

Good luck!

Photos for Flickr

February 17, 2012 by FaveCrafts 1 Comment

Do you love taking pictures? Do you enjoy showing off your finished craft projects to your friends and family? You should keep reading!

With the myriad of websites out there that allow you to share your information with the world, it can sometimes be entirely intimidating to dive into yet another one. But there is a great site out there for crafters and bloggers who love taking and sharing photos! This article will walk you through how to use Flickr and show you exactly how not intimidating it is to set up and account and start posting your pictures!

What is Flickr?

Never heard of it? That’s okay! Flickr is an online photo album that allows you to share and organize your photos in one easy place. You can search for photos and even join groups that fit your interests where you can see and share photos on a specified topic like quilting, crochet, or just general crafts!

Why Use Flickr?

Flickr is a great way to share and organize your photos in one place where you can easily share them with all your family and friends. It allows you to share photos you upload to multiple social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, or a blog at once. Friends and family can also find you on Flickr and see all your new craft projects and family photos instantly!

How to Start a Flickr Account?

Registering for a Flickr account is very easy. If you already have an account with Yahoo! you can sign in using that information on the home page, if not just click the Sign Up button and a screen like this should appear:

As you can see it gives you several easy options to sign in. You will need to create an account with Yahoo! if you do not have or would not like to sign in using Facebook or Google. Once you’ve signed into Flickr, just follow the easy on-screen prompts to upload your profile image, fill in the information you want to share with everyone, and choose a username.

Once you’ve filled out all this information you should get a confirmation email and you’re ready to start uploading photos!

Uploading Photos to Flickr

Flickr walks you through uploading photos with step-by-step on screen prompts,  making it really easy for you to add your photos.

To get started click the “upload” button that will always be located at the top of any Flickr page. You will be taken to a screen that outlines all the steps you will need to take. It looks like this:

Uploading to Flickr

Click “Choose photos and videos” to open your photo folder and simply select the photo you would like to share. You can upload more than one photo at a time and you have the option of making your photos public to everyone on Flickr or private so that only the people you choose can see them.

If you have more photos to upload simply click “add more” and chose the next photos you would like to share. When you are done, make sure you select the privacy level you would like and click “upload photos and videos”.

Uploading to Flickr

Once your photos are done uploading Flickr will prompt you to add a description. Adding descriptions and tags to your photos helps other users find them so adding good descriptions and tags is key here.

Flickr will import the title of your picture as the image title on your computer. For example, these heart earrings were called Earrings-7.jpg on my computer and that was imported into the title box before I changed it to something that’s easier to find.

In this screen you will also have the option to add this photo to a set. Sets are a great way to organize your photos by categories.

To create a set and add your photo to it right away click the “create new set” link and the box will expand so that you can name your set and give is a description. Same as with the photo descriptions, if you want other Flickr users to find your sets you will have to really describe what kind of photos you will be including in this set.

Your sets will appear at the right side of your photostream and you can always move photos around to different sets, have one photo in multiple sets, or delete photos from a set by clicking the “edit” button that is right underneath the photo set.

That’s it! Once you’ve completed all the steps your photo will be live on Flickr so that you can easily share it with all your friends and family!

Joining a Flickr Group

Groups on Flickr are a great way to share your photos with people who have the same interests as you. There are many groups on Flickr already and it should be easy to find several on any given topic that you enjoy, however you can also create your own groups. Just like the photos, groups can be either public or private so you can easily create a private group for all your family members to contribute photos of children and grandchildren.

To find already existing groups to join, click on the “groups” tab on the top bar by the “upload” tab. This will take you to a page where you can search for groups. Enter the type of group you are looking for in the search bar and a long list will come up. You can explore these groups and read more about them before deciding to join.

When you decide on a group and click the “join” button you can now add photos to the photo pool, start and join discussions, find other users who have the same interests as you, and even invite friends!

And that’s how you get started with Flickr! Easy right? You can join or build a community around your favorite topics and show off all of your photography skills and craft projects! We’ve started our own Flickr groups for a few of the sites so be sure to check those out and join us in adding photos to the pool!

FaveCrafts Heads to the Type-A Parent Conference

July 10, 2011 by FaveCrafts Leave a Comment

One of the perks of my job is connecting with bloggers an picking their brains! So you can imagine my excitement when Caitlin (editor of AllFreeKnitting) and I headed to the Type-A Parent Conference. This conference, formally known as the Type-A Mom Conference, took place from June 23-26 at the Renaissance Hotel in the heart of downtown Asheville, North Carolina. For three days, Caitlin and I attended interesting sessions about all things blog-related. We also met some amazingly Internet-savvy women (and men).

Our experience taught us so much about engaging bloggers and working with brands. Here’s a peek behind the scenes:

When we arrived at the conference, we were given a “swag bag” filled with products from the events’ sponsors. We received a box of Who Nu? cookies (delicious, by the way), a book from the Boy Scouts of America and discounted tickets to the historic Biltmore house.

My badge on the first day. It was time to get the conference started!

Caitlin and I attended a session called “Blogger Outreach That Works.” This is a picture of the Blogger Bill of Rights, which was created by session leaders, Cecily Kellog (@cecilyk), Jessi Langsen (@tokissthecook), Ana Roco-Castro (@anarc) and Jenn Fowler (@jennfowler). We learned so much about pitching to bloggers, reaching out to brands and the importance of communicating.

The keynote address on Saturday morning was given by Patti Digh (@pattidigh). Patti’s talk was called “Blog as a Verb” and it was all about finding your voice and owning what you have to say. The point that I found most important was giving up the need to be right all of the time – this will distort your message and lead to self-doubt. Caitlin and I loved Patti’s message so much, we each bought her book Four Word Self Help for our moms as a souvenir.

Here are some crafty bloggers we had the pleasure of meeting. Be sure to check them out!

  1. Catherine at Evolving Mommy
  2. Kim at Crafty Mama of 4
  3. Tonya at Create-Celebrate-Explore
  4. Sarah at Real Life Blog
  5. Alicia at Making Time for Mommy

How do you connect with other crafters?

FaveCrafts 365 Let’s Tweet!

Tweeting is described as anything from micro-blogging to chatting via social media. One tweets from Twitter.com by opening an account. From…

(This is where my tweet would have stopped if I’d been tweeting this. You have to really think about your wording when you only are given 140 characters to work with. And that’s characters, not words so even spaces count in your grand tally of 140 characters)

…there you can tweet via your computer or most digital devices like cell phones or i-touches. And now there are TweetChats and more happening at Twitter, which changes it up about as much as Facebook does. You post links in your tweets and you can also post photos by using various websites and digital device apps! It’s fun, but you need to spend some time learning and getting a feel of how Twitter works.

I’ve have many requests to be more involved on Twitter, but need your help to remind me to stay active! Care to help me out?  Watch this video to learn more about tweeting and helping me out!

Come Tweet With Us! All you have to do is click to the follow link!
