Meet and Make: Haley Pierson-Cox

September 30, 2011 by FaveCrafts

Today’s Meet and Make designer is Haley Pierson-Cox. Haley is a crafty, granny glasses-wearing Brooklyn gal with a giant crush on all things DIY. She writes The Zen of Making, a DIY blog featuring crafty tutorials, handmade geekery, vegan goodness, and all things domestic.

Ready to meet Haley?

10 Fun Facts About Haley Pierson Cox

  1. Spreadsheeting is one of my absolute favorite activities.
  2. I was a gymnast for years, so when I get excited about something and say that I’m going to do a back flip, I just might.
  3. My favorite food is broccoli.
  4. I think that crochet hooks are just about the most useful craft tools on the planet.
  5. I’m one of those weirdos who actually likes writing instructions.
  6. I’m obsessed with Clover wonder clips.
  7. I’ve been vegan for about a decade.
  8. I made my own dress for the Emmys this year (my husband was nominated), and it didn’t fall apart!
  9. My great grandmother taught me how to make braided rugs when I was very, very young, and that’s how I first caught the crafting bug.
Notions and tools are my weakness. I can resist fabric and yarn, but give me a seam measuring tool, and it’s all over!

Here’s Haley’s Project:

Scrap Fabric Rosette Barrette

Scrap Fabric Rolled Rosette Barrette

Materials:

  • Fabric strips
  • Felt scraps
  • Barrettes or hair clips
  • Thread
  • Hot glue gun
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing needle

Instructions:

  1. Cut fabric scraps into strips. You can adjust the size of your rosette by changing the length and width of the strips.Scrap Fabric Rolled Rosette Barrettes
  2. Roll fabric strips into rosettes. This process is much easier to show than tell, so I made a video. For those of you who prefer written directions: Fold the fabric strip in half horizontally. Fold one end over several times, creating the center. Holding on to these folds, begin wrapping the fabric around the center (the fabric will build on itself). To create the rose petal texture, twist the fabric as you wrap. When you reach the end of the fabric strip, place a dot of hot glue on the back, then fold the fabric end over and press into place.
  3. Cut circles out of felt. (Make them just large enough for your rosettes to fit.)Scrap Fabric Rolled Rosette Barrettes
  4. Glue rosettes to the felt using your hot glue gun.Scrap Fabric Rolled Rosette Barrettes
  5. Cut off any extra felt.Scrap Fabric Rolled Rosette Barrettes
  6. With your needle and thread, secure the rosette group to the hair clip. Make sure that your first stitch goes through the felt so it stays securely in place.Note: Depending on the type of clip you’re using, you might also want to try jewelry wire, floral wire, or fishing line.Scrap Fabric Rolled Rosette Barrette
  7. Tie off the thread, and it’s ready to wear!

FaveCrafts 365 Fabric Stiffener

March 8, 2011 by Maria

Every once in a while you need a craft material to be stiff, and there are all kinds of ways to accomplish this “hardened” state. I’m working on a project for FaveCrafts.com in this video and needed a touch of fabric stiffener to make it perfect. I’m making these fun items to use as Easter Basket stuffers! What do you think?

Do you use fabric stiffener in your projects or designs? Do you have any tips to share with us? And I think I need to go buy some balloons and make….  You gotta watch the video to find out!

Projects that use fabric stiffener:

Crochet Bowls

Porcelain Bead Necklace

Silk Flower Wall Art

FaveCrafts 365 For theBirdies

January 29, 2011 by Maria

I learned a cool green tip from my friends on Facebook! You don’t need to throw out those odds and ends and scraps of yarn or thread, but instead help a bird build a home! Remember to cut your scraps into tiny lengths so no yarn or thread gets wrapped around any little baby bird feet. I get a little goofy, but the tip is worth watching today’s FaveCrafts 365!

Gift Sunday: Festive Fabric

November 29, 2009 by FaveCrafts

If you’re a sewer or quilter, you may have extra fabric lying around that you don’t know what to do with. Fabric scraps can be reused to create items that you may not have otherwise made with the original fabric. Festive fabric is a nice embellishment to many different projects that your friends will love. They won’t even know that you used leftovers to make them!

Here are a few gift ideas using fabric:

Fabric Frame – A nice way to use old fabric scraps that creates a quilted look.

Spice Girls of the Old Country – Give a gift of lovely smelling dolls that go great in any kitchen.
