How To Make a Shiny Santa Topiary

December 11, 2013 by FaveCrafts

This tutorial is brought to you by Latrice Murphy from Any Occasion.

Hey there, FaveCrafts readers. I know you all have been crafting away this holiday season – I certainly have been. I just loved browsing Pinterest for ideas to use as a starting point. Recently, I came across a topiary and took it in my own direction. I used colors from around my house, so it worked into the decor seamlessly.

Materials:

  • Clay pot
  • Floral foam bricks
  • Styrofoam circle
  • Push pins
  • Tulle
  • Dowel rod
  • Hot glue gun
  • Mini ornaments
  • Ribbon
  • Red and white paint
  • Black elastic
  • Silver glitter tape

Instructions:

First you’ll want to place your foam brick in the bottom of the pot with hot glue. You may need to shave some pieces off to get a good fit. I used a serrated knife.

Next, you’ll created a hole with your dowel rod. Fill that hole with hot glue and place your dowel rod. Let the glue cool.

Now you can place your Styrofoam circle on top. You’re ready to add the ornaments now.

Take off the silver or hanger portion off the ornaments and discard. Using the hot glue gun add each ornament to the circle by pushing them in a little bit to secure.

After the entire circle is filled you’ll go  back with push pins and small ribbon pieces to fill in the spaces. I use 3” pieces for my ribbon loops.

Paint your pot with the red and white paint. Let it dry completely.

Add your elastic around and create a square for the buckle. Add that to the front of the pot.

Finish it off by gluing the tulle into the pot and covering up the floral brick.

You could add glitter to the tulle as well to make it really shine. This project is a bit time consuming but for around $15, I created a custom piece for my home that I really love.

National Sewing Month 2013

Woodland-Christmas-1Hi, my name is Jodie and I blog at vintagericrac.blogspot.com. I am excited to be part of National Sewing Month, although I might need a National Sewing Year to finish off all the WIPs in my sewing room. I am foremost a toymaker but I dabble in all kinds of sewing and have been known to turn out the odd quilt or garment or practical item on occasion.

I have created this cute little holiday DIY ornament that you can make up in traditional colors, or mix it up with some earthy colors to create a little woodsman. It’s such a cute Christmas craft idea and they make even more adorable DIY gifts! Have fun!

If you have a Google Account (you can make one for free), here is the link to a Google Doc to download the whole tutorial including the pattern pieces: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3POraACAxjpUEtmRUpFb0hmNEE/edit

This little Santa and his tree have been designed to be hand sewn. All embroidery is done with two strands of stranded embroidery thread.

DIY Ornament

  • 1 Body
  • 1 Hat
  • 1 Hat Brim
  • 1 Face
  • 1 Beard
  • 1 Mustache
  • 1 Belt to be cut on fold

Santa Construction:

Using the pattern placement guide, pin the beard in place .

Place the face on top of the beard and pin in place.

Thread your teeny buckle onto belt and slide to the middle. Pin belt in place on Santa.

Woodland-Christmas-3-1

Backstitch face in place – I cheated and didn’t sew the very top as it will be hidden under the hat.

Pin mustache in place on top of face and seed stitch the moustache.

Add two single wrap French knot cheeks and two double wrap French knot eyes to your face.

Woodland-Christmas-8

Fold Santa along fold line right sides out and blanket stitch the center back seam, catching the belt ends as you sew.

Woodland-Christmas-4

Pin base in place and blanket stitch ¾ of the way around. Stuff Santa and blanket stitch the base closed, adding more stuffing as needed.

Woodland-Christmas-5

Hat Construction:

Pin hat brim to hat and sew small seed or rice grain stitches to secure it to hat.

Woodland-Christmas-9

Fold hat in half right sides out and blanket stitch center back seam.

Woodland-Christmas-6

Place hat on Santa’s head.

Pop your hat on.

Cut for Tree:

Get In the Spirit with AllFreeChristmasCrafts

December 6, 2010 by AllFreeChristmasCrafts

Tis the season to get crafty!  FaveCrafts has a variety of great projects for all seasons.  But if you’re looking for even more great holiday projects of all shapes and sizes, head over to AllFreeChristmasCrafts.com.

I love this site because all of the projects are cheap and easy!  I just moved into my first apartment, so I’ve been spending like crazy on everything from bills to kitchen appliances.  This season, I need to save.  That’s why AllFreeChristmasCrafts.com is so perfect.  We can all stand to save some money this holiday season.  Why not take a little extra time and make your holiday gifts or decorations?  Plus, I always appreciate when someone puts thought into a gift.

It’s not too late to get started on fantastic Christmas projects!  On AllFreeChristmasCrafts.com, you’ll find ideas for gifts, home decor and even wearable Christmas crafts.  Basically, it’s a one stop shop for all your favorite free Christmas projects.  With over 100 projects and counting, this site is stacked with great ideas.

Here are some great projects to get you started –

  1. Knitted Mini Christmas Stocking – How cute is this adorable ornament?  If you love to knit, this is the perfect project for you!  Make a bunch of these – they’re perfect decoration for a tree that needs that little extra sparkle.
  2. Santa Scarf – It doesn’t get much cuter than this scarf.  It’s perfect for the holiday season and it makes a great gift.  Sewing enthusiasts, this is your project!
  3. Felt Tree Skirt – A tree skirt is great for brightening up your holiday decor.  Some tree skirts can be pretty expensive, but this one is cheap and easy to make.  You don’t have to be a world-class crafter to make this project.

  1. Magnetic Nativity Scene – This project is reusable, which is fantastic if you’re trying to be frugal this season.  More importantly, it’s an education and fun for kids of all ages.  Stick these magnets anywhere!
  2. Baby Jesus Ornament – It doesn’t get much easier than this ornament.  Seriously, it’s so easy and fun to make – it’s perfect for beginners.  Plus, it’s a great religious craft.
  3. Candy Cane Bedroom Socks – I love cozy socks.  During the winter months, I love to keep my toes warm at night.  That’s why I’m obsessed with this project.  Avid knitters, you’ll love this pattern.

This is just a fraction of the awesome projects on AllFreeChristmasCrafts.com. Check out the site for many more great projects and ideas to get you started.

My favorite project on the site is the Christmas Treat Jar.  I gave a similar gift last year as part of a Secret Santa exchange.  I filled up a plain glass jar with candy and decorated it with paint pens.  I found that this was an inexpensive way to personalize a present.

So go craft-crazy this holiday season!  You won’t regret it.

Christmas Decorating Ideas

July 30, 2009 by FaveCrafts

I know it’s still early, I mean, it’s only July, but Christmas will be here before you know it. My fiance and are finally moved into our new home and the one thing that’s on my mind is getting our first Christmas tree. Christmas is my favorite time of year; it’s such a happy and cheery time. I’m already trying to think of Christmas decorating ideas. I know I shouldn’t be thinking of all this because I should be looking at ways to decorate the house now, not for Christmas.

Christmas in the Bathroom?

June 30, 2009 by FaveCrafts

I know Christmas isn’t for a very long time still, but you know it’ll be here before we know it. I know it’s hard to imagine the piles of snow blocking our driveways and the kids laying down making those snow angels. Sometimes on those chilly nights your pipes might freeze outside making your toilet hard to flush, well here’s a cute thought. Put Santa and his elf together to create cute little plunger pals for the bathroom. These guys are here to plunge your toilet, they’re trained for the job.

santa-plunger

I know it’s an odd craft you might not want to create, but everyone needs a plunger. Whether you use them or not it still creates a fun craft and conversation piece. I just thought I’d share it with you. Another cute bathroom craft that isn’t necessarily for Christmas is a love wall hanging. It can easily decorate your bathroom and with the red color it can stay up year-round through Christmas. Enjoy!
