FaveCrafts 365 Ribbon Cuts

March 6, 2011 by Maria

Well, I got a little carried away while crafting with ribbon today! I really should build a ribbon holder, but for now I keep all my ribbon in a big clear box and sometimes it gets a little wild. I show you the best way to trim or cut ribbon to keep it from fraying and what to use if nothing else works.

Ribbon is the perfect finishing touch to a project. You can make a simple bow or a big old puffy one. Do you craft with ribbon? What do you do with it? We’d love to know! And please share your own ribbon tips with us, I could use some advice on organization!

Check out these cool ribbon projects!

How to: Revamp your Shoes

August 11, 2010 by FaveCrafts

There is nothing better than a good pair of shoes. Great shoes improve your posture, flatter your figure, give you a more attractive gait, and provide the base for a stylish outfit. Shoes always fit, no matter how many scoops of slow-churned goodness you added to your cone last night. And as Cher Horowitz of Clueless would say, “You see how picky I am about my shoes, and they only go on my feet!”

Instead of buying a new pair of shoes for every trend, why not take some old, washed-up, has-been shoes from your closet and DIY them into something unique? There are myriad ways to re-do your shoes. If you follow these how-to tips, even your shoe rack will inspire you to say “Hello, Lover…”

Re-Do your Shoes: Make a Removable Embellishment
Sex and the City Shoes
Make a simple ribbon or chiffon embellishment that you can add to any pair of strappy heels and remove when the trend dies down. Because let’s face it, wearing ruffly chiffon leaves all over your feet is not going to be popular for long. For these tutorials, use a ribbon as a base to hold whatever embellishment you want (be creative!) and attach it to Velcro strips (thus the “removable” part).

Re-Do your Shoes: Decoupage
Mod Podge
You already know how to decoupage a piece of furniture or a picture frame, but did you know you could decoupage a pair of shoes too? With a little mod podge, some fabric, and a hot glue gun, you can essentially reupholster a pair of old shoes like you would a couch. Try this tutorial for detailed instructions.

Re-Do your Shoes: Paint
Spray Paint
Spray paint a pair of boring flats or heels with a bright color and seal with a coat of clear spray paint. Make sure you tape off the soles and other places you don’t want the paint to get on, and wait for the paint to dry completely (overnight) before handling.

Re-Do your Shoes: Sew a Ruffle
Ruffle

Use our handy How to Sew a Ruffle guide to make tiny fabric ruffles to attach to your shoes.  This tutorial shows how great ruffle embellishments on flats can look.

Re-Do your Shoes: Add a Flower
Fabric Flowers Fabric Flowers Fabric Flowers
Use one of our easy fabric flower tutorials, or crochet or knit a flower, and attach it to your favorite heels or flats. Flowers look good on the toes of your shoes or even adorning the ankle straps.

What other shoe refashions have you seen or done?

How to: Make a Flowergirl Basket

January 6, 2010 by FaveCrafts

Planning a wedding is fun, but it can also be very stressful. I know first-hand as I am in the process of planning myself, only five months left! Anyway, I’m trying to spend as little money as possible, so it’s time to get crafty. I’ve decided to have two flower girls in the wedding, both of which are my nieces. In any case, I have made their flower girl baskets. These are some great craft ideas if it’s what you’re looking for. They’re easy to make and it will have special meaning to you.

Materials needed are very few:

  • Loose ribbon- any color you desire
  • Tulled ribbon- any color you desire
  • Any size basket
  • Embellishment- I used daisy adhesives
  • Aleen’s Fabric Glue

It’s simple and easy to make just follow these instructions:

  1. Measure how much tulle you’ll need to go around the basket. Be sure you measure a little extra so it can overlap in the back.
  2. Put glue on the back of the tulled ribbon.
  3. Glue onto top part of basket pressing firmly. Wait to dry.
  4. Once this is dry you can glue the embellished flower or whatever you choose, onto the top of the tulled ribbon. I did this only in the front, but you can go all around the basket if you wish.
  5. Cut loose ribbon any length you desire and tie around handle of basket. Again, I did this in front and back, but you can do how you wish.

Remember, you can alter the baskets to match your wedding attire and colors. There are so many different choices when it comes to ribbon and tulle colors, so you don’t need to worry. There are also different options for basket sizes and shapes. I personally like the square the best, but they also have circles or rectangles.

If you want to get a little fancier with the baskets you can always add some silk or satin to line the inside of the basket. The length of the loose ribbon on the handle can be as short as you want or you can make it long enough to flow with your flower girl’s dress.

How to: Make Last Minute Christmas Crafts and Gifts

December 23, 2009 by FaveCrafts

There are two days left until Christmas, can you believe it? In July we started a countdown to Christmas and that was over one hundred and fifty days. Time can really fly by fast. Especially tonight, tomorrow is Christmas Eve and some of you may not have any gifts yet. Well once again, we are here to save you! Here are some free Christmas craft ideas we would love to share with you. Last minute Christmas gifts are included.

For the last minute Christmas craft you can make a really nice platter to serve your guests. We know you have many nice plates, but you’re using them all for your company, so now you can create another one. All you need are two glass plates, a candlestick holder and some heavy duty glue. You can get these glass plates cheap from any store; you may want to try the dollar store or dollar general. Once this craft is done, you will love it. All you need to do is take one plate face-up, the way it normally sits. Then you glue the candlestick holder in the middle of the plate and let that dry for a few hours. Once it’s dry you then glue the other plate on top of the other end of the candlestick holder. Again, face-up like a normal plate. Let that dry overnight. Be sure you clean it so when you serve your guests there is no residue. Fill it with any snacks or treats you wish and there you go, a brand new platter! This is a great free Christmas craft idea. You can also use plastic plates and candlestick holders if you want to add more color and style.

If you’re a slacker looking for last minute Christmas gifts then now is the time to hurry up and use your creative thinking. Last minute Christmas gifts don’t have to look like they were last minute. If you have some left over ribbon from wrapping your presents and an old frame you can really get creative. Make a decorative picture frame. All you need is a frame, any size you wish, some ribbon and a hot glue gun. Measure the ribbon according to how big or small your frame is, cut at desired length. Then use the hot glue gun and glue the ribbon all around the frame. Let this dry and then add a cute picture. You can also use the ribbon to make a little bow and glue that at the top of the frame. These make for great last minute Christmas gifts.
