Turning Trash to Cash: How to Get Paid to Recycle

May 7, 2012 by FaveCrafts

This guest post was written by Kira Cowan from Tip Hero.

You may not feel like a superhero when you bring a recycling bin out to the curb, but you are in fact aiding in saving the world. The small act of recycling your recyclable materials reduces landfill waste and pollution, conserves resources and helps to keep our world clean and livable. Hooray for you!

So what happens if we don’t recycle? Well, among other negative effects, we will literally run out of landfill space and our water and air will grow more and more polluted as time marches on. It would be a bleak-looking future, my friends.

Still need more of a personal incentive for recycling? That’s ok. (Even if you’re already an avid recycler, wouldn’t it be nice to be rewarded for your good deeds?) Recycling companies, who are dedicated to keeping our planet beautiful, are fully aware that money is one of the best incentives out there. You might be surprised by the number of ways that you can turn recyclables into cash. And what better way is there to make money than by doing your part for the environment?

We all know that if you have a plethora of aluminum cans or glass bottles, you can take them to your local recycling center in exchange for change, but there are lots of other things that you can recycle too, and many of these recyclables can turn out to be much more profitable. Let’s take a look at some lesser-known methods for recycling and making money while doing so.

Cell Phones

  • Cash4Berry: use this site’s phone finder tool to find out exactly how much cash you can get back for your specific phone’s model.
  • Cell for Cash: find your phone on their list, submit your information, and send your phone to receive the assigned cash value! They also offer free shipping.
  • Electronics for Cash: appraise your phone using their site and send it in for free. You can receive payment in many ways, from cash to PayPal to charitable donations.

Other Electronics

  • BuyMyTronics.com: this site will buy your new, used or broken camcorders, digital cameras, GPS’s and more. Their system makes selling easy and pays you quickly.
  • YouRenew.com: here you can get cash for electronics that have value or easily recycle those that don’t. Sell big items likes laptops and eReaders or small items like calculators and mp3 players. Go green, send items for free and get paid easily at YouRenew.
  • Gazelle: sell or recycle electronics like blu-ray players, desktops, e-readers, gaming consoles, camera lenses and more. Gazelle ranks #24 in INC Magazine’s 500 fastest growing companies in America.

Bonus Tip: Don’t have any old electronics to sell? Try checking with local businesses or schools to see if they are upgrading their systems. If so, you may be able to recycle their old models for cash!

Miscellaneous

  • Cardboard Boxes: Have you moved recently? If so, are you hoarding a bunch of perfectly good cardboard boxes you may not need again? Head to Box Cycle to sell your cardboard boxes for cash!
  • Ink Cartridges: get top dollar for your empty inkjet and laser printer cartridges. It’s easy and free to ship! You could also try Advantage Cartridge or eCycleGroup.
  • Golf Balls: if you’re an avid golfer, chances are you either have a multitude of golf balls or you find old forgotten balls in muddy or wooded areas. However you collect them, use these extra balls to make some extra cash.
  • Make Money by Reducing Your Carbon Footprint: this site actually pays you to reduce home energy use. All you have to do is sign up, create a profile, measure your home energy usage for the past year (and subsequently each month), reduce your energy use and collect what you earn from PayPal.
  • Make Money Off of Your Trash: in their constant effort to eliminate the idea of waste, Terracycle, one of the fastest growing green companies in the world, has created national recycling systems for previously non-recyclable items. Be sure to check out Terracycle to find out how to turn your trash into cash.

Also, as a final tip, be sure to heed this advice from eHow:

Donations of old goods may be tax deductible, saving your money even if they don’t make a direct profit. Check with your accountant or the revenue service in your area to see if any of your recycling donations are deductible.

April Radio Show Re-cap: Toilet Paper Rolls, Vegans, and Jesters

April 11, 2012 by FaveCrafts

Did you miss it this month? Then you missed a great FaveCrafts Radio Show!

We got to talk to some fabulously fun and creative craft bloggers who love turning trash into treasure.

First up was Lisa Nelsen-Woods from Condo Blues who told us that she loves being stylish and green on a budget. That’s why the Habitat Resource is her best friend! She taught us that the key to green crafting is “seeing potential in every single thing that goes in the trash can.” And she makes sure to do just that. Lisa’s made a wreath for her door out of the pages of a phone book and you should hear the awesome idea she had for her bathroom walls! If you want to find out, you’ll just have to listen to the recorded broadcast ;).

Next on the list was Calley Pate from The Eco Chic. Calley told us that she lets her kids find the inspiration from the recyclable items in her home and she works from there. She and her family will be celebrating Earth Day by going to varies events in their area. Oh yea, she also helped get a record in the Guinness Book of World Records. Want to know for what? Find out here.

We wrapped up the show with Becky Striepe from Crafting a Green World, whose crafting business grew out of a storage problem. She was making more than she could hide or give away! Her tips for sourcing green materials? She says that you “have to shift your thinking, love your materials, think about where they came from, how they’ll hold up, where they’ll go at the end of their lives”. Want to know her tips for making your crafty business greener? You can find them here!

 The Amy Anderson Challenge!

In case you missed it, Amy Anderson challenged you guys to make a piece of furniture out of old phone books! That’s right. I heard it. Is it a challenge you are willing to accept?

That’s all we have for you from this show, but be sure to join us next month May 8th at 11am EST to talk fashion with our guests and get the chance to win some cool prizes!

Paper or Plastic? How to Craft with Recyclables

April 9, 2012 by AllFreeHolidayCrafts

My name is Rachel and I’m a plastic bag hoarder.

Yes, it’s true.  I have so many grocery store bags stashed in my kitchen drawer that it literally got stuck the other day.  That’s how I knew I had a problem.

But now that I’ve come to terms with my problem, I’ve decided to figure out a way to make use of those plastic bags.  A crafty way, of course!

I’ve collected a bunch of fun ideas for crafts to make from recycled materials and I think you’re really going to like them.  So keep reading if you want to find out how to reuse your plastic, paper and more!

Plastic Bag Crafts:

I love the look of these Pom Pom Flowers, and the fact that they’re made out of recycled plastic bags makes them that much cooler!  If you can get your hands on different colored plastic bags you can create a whole assortment of blooms to hang in your backyard. I’m planning a backyard barbecue for Memorial Day this year and I can’t wait to make a bunch of these flowers to decorate with!

Who would have thought plastic bags could look so great as a door decoration?!  This fun Recycled Shopping Bag Wreath is super simple to put together and a great way to get rid of those bags you probably have piling up. I have a friend who recently decided to only use reusable shopping bags and this wreath was her way of using up all the plastic bags that were cluttering up her house.

Recycled Paper Crafts:

There are tons of flower craft ideas out there, but one of my favorites has to be these Pretty Recycled Paper Flowers. I love that they’re made out of old store catalog pages. I always feel so wasteful when I toss my mail after barely giving it a glance. At least now with this flower craft tutorial, I can turn the colorful catalog pages into something beautiful to decorate my home with. You could also use these flowers to accent your gift wrap, or turn them into a cute accessory!

If you know someone who loves comics (or “funnies” as we call them in my house), these Awesome Comic Wrapped Decorative Balls are a great gift to make them!  All you need are some colorful cartoons printed on newspaper, a dash of Mod Podge (or glue and water), and a few hours on a rainy day and these cute decorative spheres basically make themselves!  I think they’re so fun looking and are such a unique idea for a gift!

More Recycled Paper & Plastic Crafts:

When I first saw these Plastic Cup Dangle Earrings, I seriously thought they were from a boutique. But no, these chic accessories are actually made from a plastic cup covered in pretty fabric scraps!  Even if you’ve never made jewelry before, you can easily customize your own pair by following these simple instructions. I think I’m going to make a couple to match some of my favorite outfits.

These Plastic Bottle Flowers make me so happy. They’re so cheery and bright, and just looking at them in my front yard puts me in a good mood. Before I made these, I never really realized how many cool crafts you can make using recycled plastic bottles, but now I’m hooked!  Since we drink a ton of bottled water at my house (not good, I know!), I can feel a little better about my carbon footprint if I turn them into something useful rather than just tossing them.

So tell me:  Would you make any of these crafts?  Which one is your favorite?

Going “Green” for St. Patty’s Day: 11 Recycled Crafts

March 15, 2012 by FaveCrafts

CraftFoxes.comToday’s guest post if from our pals at CraftFoxes! Bethany Marcello is an assistant editor for CraftFoxes.com, a social network for crafters.

St. Patrick’s Day may have been “green” long before organic suds lined the aisles at Whole Foods, but with a little focus we’re going to eco-tize one of our favorite holidays. From T-shirt redos and glitter-glammed shoes to modernized pots and plastics, this clever collection of Irish-inspired upcycled crafts offers all you need for a greener St. Patrick’s Day.

Chartreuse your Shoes

Whether fir, olive or chartreuse, a touch of green glitter adds instant allure to rundown flats and heels. Want just a temporary glint of green? Create a glittery shamrock shoe embellishment with a clip earring and stiff cardboard or felt.

To glitter glamor your shoes, check out this DIY Dorothy tutorial from CraftFoxes.

Sham Wow

Lucky shamrock plants in charming recycled containers green up your home and offer an escape from winter gray. Great for your child’s first garden craft, shamrock is hardy, disease-resistant and needs little water. (Keep in mind, though, it’s harmful to pets.) A coffee sleeve makes a great upcycled planter, and don’t forget chipped Mason jars and tea cups also work (with river rock placed along the bottom).

Raise Your Glass

Speaking of old Mason jars, a simple hole punch turns the classic canner into a cheap travel mug, great for those St. Patrick’s Day pub crawls. Scrapbook paper or scrap fabric adds festive flavor. Speaking of festive flavor, teetotalers may want to consider filling their new mugs with a copycat version of McDonald’s Shamrock Shake.

Foam Home

For a quick piece of Irish front door décor, a frame, foam wreath and green ribbon are all you need. For an upcycled version, replace the foam with a sturdy cardboard circle, scrap fabric for the ribbon and twigs tied with twine for a rustic version of a frame.

Lose Your Shirt

A stained green T-shirt earns a second-life as an upcycled, no-sew necklace. A shamrock pin can Irish-up this quick craft, or consider using the necklace as an unexpected but charming door garland.

Open Book

Dictionary décor is one of the craft world’s trendiest juxtapositions. Try crafting a St. Patrick’s-themed series with phrases like “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” in a clever font. The stark black definitions contrast nicely with an emerald shamrock for eye-catching home décor.

Polish ‘Til It Shines

Particularly good for teenagers, this simple St. Patrick’s upcycle combines a bold pendant and green-tinted nail polish. Be sure to do a color test the polish on the back of the jewelry before going whole hog.

Planking

Scrap and mill-end planks become a rustic 8-inch by 20-inch shamrock, ideal for outdoor porch décor or even as a fun spring centerpiece. Feel free to go for a deeper green, finishing with some light sanding for a shabby chic look.

Stay Golden

Glossy black paint upcycles a piece of second-hand ceramic into a charming cauldron that’s good for both March 17th as well as Halloween. Paired with a second-hand frame, proudly displaying a St. Patrick’s Day expression, the charming table décor makes a quick and frugal upcycle.

Hat’s Off

Turn a tomato-tinted plastic container upside down and you’ve got the makings for a clever Wee One upcycle. This party favor can hold the classic foil coin or green candy, but consider making gold cookies for unique St. Patrick’s Day charms.

Sowing Seeds

For sophisticated St. Patrick’s Day table décor, consider these Anthroplogie-inspired seed blooms made with—can you believe—Q-tips! (Unused, of course.) Food coloring adds a touch of green while a foam ball and Chinese takeout chopsticks make up the rest.

So there you have it! 11 “green” ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s day!

How will you be getting lucky this year?
