Recycled Crafts: Minion Craft Full Tutorial

July 13, 2015 by FaveCrafts

SPOILER ALERT! This is an adorable preschool craft in lieu of the new Minions movie, and I wanted to give you a full tutorial of a quick craft for kids. Toilet paper roll crafts are such a big craft because they are always around and there’s so much to do with them. This is a full tutorial for a cute little minion toy that your child can easily take with them anywhere they go. This one calls for the traditional yellow minions, but you can also change it up a bit and make the evil purple minions.

I feel like as I get older, the more I appreciate the stuff I took advantage of as a kid, or rather what I didn’t take advantage of. I was one of those kids who wanted to grow up way too fast and was way too serious. So as a 22-year old college student, psychologists would say that I have been trying to make up for my childhood by my Disney obsession, but, like wine, those just get better with age. Being a summer pre-k teacher, you quickly find out what your group of kids enjoy and still challenge their motor skills. Recycling is very important to me to begin with, as is green cleaning, so I loved to implement that in the classroom. The best part about this brilliant little kids’ craft is that a free printable pattern is provided, so even the littlest minion fans can join in the fun. They can practice their tracing and cutting skills to bring the minions to life.

Recycled Minion Craft Full Tutorial

Made for AllFreeKidsCrafts by Amanda Formaro

Minion Craft

Materials:

  • 3 cardboard tubes
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors
  • Black, gray brown and yellow markers
  • Construction paper: blue, yellow, white, black
  • Minion coveralls and goggles pattern

Instructions

1. Cut a sheet of yellow construction paper in half lengthwise. You can get two minions from each half. Apply glue stick to the yellow paper and wrap it around the cardboard tube. Trim the excess (about half a sheet) and repeat this process for the next two minions.

Step 1

2. Cut a sheet of blue construction paper in half lengthwise. Take one of the halves and cut it in half in the opposite direction. Now, from one of those halves, cut it in half again, lengthwise. The strips you need measure 2×6-inches.

Step 2

3. Use the pattern to cut the coveralls out of your blue strip.

Step 33.5

4. Glue the coveralls to the yellow tube, lining it up along the bottom of the tube.

Step 4

5. If you like, you can add the details such as the buttons on the coveralls using a black marker, and the front pocket with the letter “G” onto the front. For smaller kids, you may want to skip this part.

6. Cut a thin strip of black paper, about 1/4″ wide for the giggles. Glue the strip around the head area of the tube, about 3/4″ from the top of the tube.

7. Cut the goggle pieces from the black and white paper. For a minion with one eye, use the larger circles, for two eyes, use the small set of circles.

8. Glue the white circle to the black circle and draw a pupil in the eye using a brown marker. You can add a dot of black to the brown. Glue the eye to the head of the minion overlapping the goggle strap. If you like, you can make the eyes  appear to be squinting by adding yellow marker to the white as shown by the minion on the left.

9. Use gray or  brown markers to add mouths.

10. If you would like to add hair, cut from black paper and glue to the inside of the tube at the front.

Check out this crocheted Evil Minion Baby Hat! It’s so cute that it’s a crime.

14 DIY Recycled Crafts That Will Help The Earth

April 15, 2015 by Tanner Bell

I just love it when I can take something from around my house that might normally end up in the trash and make it into something beautiful or useful.  It’s not only economical but it helps the environment too!  Earth Day is coming up but let’s find ways to take care of the earth every single day. Recycling items we would normally toss away or items we no longer have a use for (at least as they are now) is a great way to start.

DIY Recycled Crafts

Paper towel rolls, bottle caps, old magazines, cereal boxes, soda cans…the possibilities are endless. Sometimes it’s just a matter of trying to look at the item differently. Instead of seeing it as trash, look at it as a chance to be creative and think outside the box. And if you’re stumped for ideas, don’t worry. I’ve gathered 14 of my favorite craft projects using recycled items together here for you.

There are some great crafts here for kids and teens like the tin can wind chimes, soda can tab belt, and the t-shirt shag rug. That sumo wrestler plastic bottle bowling set is adorable!  I just love the soda can camera and the honey bear vases myself. They are so unique and creative!  They would both make great accent pieces in any room.  But don’t think you can’t make crafty projects using recycled materials for adults too. Check out the coiled magazine bowl and DIY desk organizer for starters.

Have you ever considered plastic spoons as a staple craft supply? If you haven’t, you need to see all of the amazing things you can make with them! I personally love plastic spoons because of how inexpensive they are and the never ending variety of colors that they come in. Link Love: DIY Antlers

January 16, 2015 by FaveCrafts

It’s time for a somewhat unusual link love post, but unusual in the best way. Because, quite frankly, these craft projects are actually becoming more and more common and we don’t hate them. In fact, there are plenty of reasons crafting with antlers is actually quite amazing.

Some things to note before you send PETA after me.

  • Deer, and other antlered animals, shed their antlers naturally
  • Some, if not all, of the projects below can be made using fake antlers (plastic, plaster, etc) that you can probably find online somewhere
  • I don’t like hunting. I am not supporting killing deer in any way at all.

These antler projects are trending all over the place. I’ve seen antlers in home decor magazines and there are TONS of  painted antlers on Etsy that are simply gorgeous. These diy antler projects will inspire you to use this renewable resource in your home decor. I like to think of it as a “rustic meets modern” sort of project. We can all see the natural element in these antler craft ideas and by bringing nature indoors, we are admiring and bringing beauty in our homes. Appreciate the natural and abstract shape of antlers and embrace the uniqueness of each one. Plus, there are even diy faux antlers that you can try to make. Learn how to make antlers with paper mache or even clay and you’ll love the result. Painting deer antlers is just one way to make these natural pieces a little more urban and chic.  It’s time to make deer antlers a part of your home decor this year.

10 Thrifty Recycled Crafts for Summer Fun

June 13, 2014 by AllFreeKidsCrafts

10 Thrifty Recycled Crafts for Summer FunEvery kid looks forward to summertime because they get to spend some time doing fun creative activities. Kids get to let loose and run around outside in the sun instead of being in a classroom all day. The challenge, though, is keeping your kids occupied with fun summer activities. My kids are all energy and no down time, so I’m constantly searching for new activities to keep them entertained. Now, I love using recycled crafts to entertain my children because I don’t have to worry about spending a lot of money on projects to keep them occupied. I’ve found that the coolest recycled craft that my kids love are the Adorable Minion Lawn Darts because they can’t get enough of the Minions. This fun craft keeps them outside for hours at a time. I have a hard time getting them to come inside when it’s time for lunch.

Of course, you need to plan for the summer days when the weather might not be as nice as you’d like it to be, so it’s always a great idea to add some indoor activities to your list. Any time I come across cardboard boxes, I immediately grab them because my kids love turning them into a fort or Creative Cardboard Box Cars. They always have a blast making things out of the cardboard boxes. Sometimes they prefer playing with cardboard boxes over anything else. That’s why it’s always a good idea to find new cardboard boxes to bring home.

Most of the materials for these crafts were already in my house, so I didn’t have to scramble around town looking for things that my children can use for their crafts. These no-fuss crafts really made it easier for me to keep my children happy.

Outdoor Activities

Summertime is all about playing with your kids outside in the sun, so you need to have some fun summer activities that will get the whole family outside to enjoy the beautiful weather. The Water Bottle Rocket is the perfect kids craft to get your little ones outside; after all, what kid doesn’t like to shoot things off into into the air?

  • Unexpected Plastic Egg Fireflies
  • Adorable Minion Lawn Darts

Indoor Activities

Indoor activities are always a great idea to have for when it’s nasty and rainy outside. Your kids can throw a burst of color into a cloudy day when they make Color Burst Melted Crayon Art. This a great activity idea to do, especially when your kids have a bunch of old, broken crayons that they never use.
