Quilt Festival Long Beach 2011, You Really Should Go!

July 12, 2011 by FaveQuilts

International Quilt Festival, Long Beach will be held at the Long Beach (Cal.) Convention Center July 29-31, 2011 with a preview night on July 28. Oh how I wish I could attend! If you’re in the Long Beach area, or feel like taking a nice end-of-July trip to sunny California, check out International Quilt Festival, Long Beach.

Ask Maria “Long Arm Quilting Machine”

November 26, 2010 by Maria

What is a long arm quilting machine?

I am just back from the amazing Fall Quilt Market in Houston and saw many long arm sewing machines in action! This is a special sewing machine that is used to quilt the quilt! The quilt is held taut on a large frame (adjusted to the quilt size) with a sewing arm that can move freely, letting the quilter create any design or pattern onto the quilt with free motion or, on the high end machine, a computer can control the machine. There is a huge variety available and each machine has its own qualities and benefits. This type of machine is an investment in an art and range in price starting around $4,000.00. One of my favorites from the trade show floor was the Tin Lizzie, I just loved the name and the Tin Lizzie 2 was introduced at the show!

International Quilt Festival: Vibrant Quilting

April 29, 2010 by FaveCrafts

One of my favorite parts of the International Quilt Festival in Chicago was visiting the classrooms to see what’s up and coming in the quilting world. The class that really stuck out to me was called “Snowball Quilts” taught by renown designer Kaffe Fassett and Liza Prior Lucy. Fassett’s line of fabrics are stunning and vibrant, using bright colors and large floral prints. Students in the class spent their day picking out fabrics and laying out a quilt in a somewhat different style than we’re used to.

In general, when you pick out fabrics for a quilt, you’ll pick contrasting colors and differing pattern sizes. If your first fabric has a large print, the second will have a medium print and the third will have a small print – or none at all. For Fassett’s class, all these rules were thrown out the window. Students were encouraged to create a pattern that wouldn”t draw your eye to one particular place. Most of the fabrics chosen were in a similar color family – so quilts would look mostly red or mostly green in some cases.

In addition, after laying out the larger squares students cut out smaller squares that were placed at the intersections of the larger patchwork. This created a hexagon effect. Even the smaller squares were to be a color that wouldn’t stand out, so you could only see the hexagon effect if you really looked at it. The outcome was like a blending of color, texture and pattern, which highlighted the beauty and boldness of each quilt.

It was very inspiring to see all the amazing quilts that were designed that day. Here is a quick video that scans the walls where the quilts were being worked on.

International Quilt Festival: Embellishments

April 28, 2010 by FaveCrafts

Recently I attended the International Quilt Festival in Chicago, Illinois. It was the first quilt festival I’ve been to and I was quite intrigued. When I first walked into the room it was like nothing I’ve ever seen before. There were award-winning quilts hanging up for all to see, booths to my left, booths to my right and beautiful colors and designs.

Along with all the colorful quilts were other booths and demos. At one booth I noticed some cute bags and purses in the shape of an owl. These craft and quilt designers are talented in so many ways. There are so many unique techniques to be used it was a thrill.

While walking from aisle to aisle I noticed a glitter demonstration. Giving this demonstration was a representative of Embellishment Village. I immediately stopped to watch what she was doing. All this glitter, sparkle and bright colors, I just couldn’t look away. What she was teaching was how to create designs with washable glitter. This glitter can be used to embellish quilts, bags, clothes and more. It’s great because even after many washes the glitter will still stay on.

To make the glitter stay on she used a foil pen which has a tacky glue in it. Along with the glitter she put foil on the glue and then pulled the foil back. In doing so, the foil leaves a colorful resin behind creating a beautiful design. These foiling products again, can be used on quilts and wearables.

International Quilt Festival

April 15, 2009 by FaveCrafts

The International Quilt Festival is making its way to the Chicagoland area this weekend. Starting tomorrow night (with a preview) and running through April 19th, crafters, quilters and quilt lovers can stop into the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill. to experience the festival. In addition to the 1,000 quilts on display, there will be items for sale, lectures and classes on topics like scrap quilts and how to quilt hexagonal spirals. Kelly and I will be attending the event this Friday and will report back for those of you who cannot attend. If you want to learn more about the festival or find out when it might be in your area, check out the International Quilt Festival website. And in case you can’t make it, check out some of our great quilting projects on FaveCrafts.
