Today begins the very last day of the FaveQuilts Beginners Quilt-Along. We’ll be sad to see it end, but we’re so happy that we were all able to do this project together! In the past few weeks, we have learned what you need to make a small quilt, how to cut your fabrics with a rotary cutter, and how to piece a quilt top. If you’re just joining us, there’s still time to start your project! Feel free to work on this quilt at your own pace.
This week, we’re going to learn how to finish our table runner. We’ll add batting and backing, stitch the layers together, turn the quilt out, and topstitch around the quilt to secure all the layers. Although this table runner will not be quilted and bound like most quilts, it will get you familiar with stitching through a quilt sandwich.
What to Do This Week
1) Watch the Video Tutorial on Finishing the Quilt
Quilt designer Christian Tamez will demonstrate how to sandwich and finish your quilt. Watch to see how he layers the batting and backing. You will put the right side of the backing to the wrong side of the batting and top in this project. Once you stitch around the perimeter, you will turn the quilt out so that the backing and quilt top both face outwards. Watching Christian go through these steps in the video will help you to visualize the process.
2) Finish Your Table Runner
Print out written directions for finishing the table runner from FaveQuilts.com. Then get to work on putting together your own Pinwheel Table Runner! If you have questions or trouble finishing the project, make sure to post your comments on the FaveQuilts Facebook or in the FaveQuilts Flickr group.
3) Share Your Progress for A Chance to Win!
Once you have your Pinwheel Table Runner finished, set it out on your table and take a picture! Share your finished project with other quilters by posting your photos in the FaveQuilts Flickr group. Leave a comment in the Flickr group if you have questions or concerns or just want to share your excitement with the rest of the group.
Don’t forget to tag your photo with #beginnersquiltalong for a chance to win the quilt-along giveaway. Next week, we’ll randomly choose one of our participants who has posted a photo on Flickr to win an awesome prize!
