Needlefelted DIY Wall Art

November 13, 2015 by Lisa Fulmer

Needlefelting is one of the easiest crafts to learn because it’s fun, it’s colorful, and it’s a great stress reliever too. With a needle punch tool and a little imagination, you can create whimsical DIY wall art project like this silly sunny daisy. Needlefelting is like painting with wool – try it, you’ll like it! Feel free to use this technique to get creative and design your own DIY art projects for your home.

Needlefelted DIY Wall ArtSupplies:

  • Felt sheets
  • Wool roving
  • Yarn
  • Needle punch tool
  • Foundation brush
  • White pencil
  • Embroidery floss and needle

Needlefelted DIY Wall Art

Start by drawing or tracing a design onto a sheet of felt with a white pencil. Place the felt on top of a foundation brush which is what you punch into. Then, pull off a few strands of wool roving to begin. A needle punch tool has five special barbed needles inside that work to lock fibers together as you punch straight up and down.

Needlefelted DIY Wall Art

Little by little, keep filling in your design with more strands of wool. You can work with a single color or blend colors just like you’re painting. Tap each strand in with just a few punches at first, to make sure you like it. You can easily pull the wool up off the felt sheet if you change your mind. Once you like it, then punch more to lock it in. Don’t over punch though – or too many of the fibers will disappear beneath the surface.

Needlefelted DIY Wall Art

Above is a picture of what the back side looks like – the needle forces the wool fibers through the felt. Lift your felt up off the brush every so often to reposition and to prevent all the fibers from sticking to the brush itself.

Outline your design in desired with a soft yarn and punch it into place. Accent your design with embroidery. I added an outline stitch in the center of each petal.

Now that your wool canvas has been painted, you have several options for how to display it. You can sew it to a larger felt or fabric panel, frame it inside a shallow shadowbox, or mount it on a wood plaque with a dry adhesive like fabric tape. Enjoy!

How to Make Your Own Felt

November 17, 2010 by FaveCrafts

There are a lot of different ways of working with felt. The simplest way is to buy felt pre-made from the store and use it as fabric for sewing projects, such as this Felt Carnation Pin. You can also make your own felt from wool roving by doing a process called “wet felting.” This method is explained further in this beautiful Wet Felted Ball Jewelry tutorial and our How to Make Felt guide. Another way to make felt is by washing and drying an old sweater–the heat will fuse the fibers together to make felt! Read all about Felting Wool Sweaters if you’re into upcycling projects!

Needlefelting is a way of pushing wool fibers together with a special type of needle. This process does not require water or heat. Our How to Needle Felt guide has a great explanation of this craft. Basically, you take a piece of wool roving and arrange it over a piece of fabric (perhaps a blouse or a bag that you’d like to embellish?), then place the whole apparatus over a foam block or mat and start rapidly poking at the wool with your needle. You can use templates or stencils to make different shapes. Even cookie cutters would work. (I sense an ugly Christmas sweater project…)

Here’s a great video that will guide you through the needle felting process, from TheCraftsChannel:

You can even make 3-D needle felted projects by shaping the wool into whatever you want to make, or attaching felt to a foam base. This Needle Felted Chick would make a great wedding cake topper, and these Flower Pins are a cute way to dress up a plain outfit.

Keep in mind:

  • The needles used in needle felting are really sharp! Consider protecting your fingers so you don’t poke yourself.
  • If you’re felting in the dryer, you should put your fabric in a mesh bag to avoid a clogged, fiber-filled washer and dryer. Also empty your lint catcher frequently.
  • Try adding a pair of jeans to the load to “agitate” your felt more and get a better result.

This ladybug is a cute needle felted project. You can find the instructions to make this charming ladybug at MielkesFarm.com

Almost everyone has at least one memory of working with felt. We bought felt squares to cut up and sew or glue. Finger puppets? Bookmarks? Placemat? Most of us think of felt crafts as kid’s crafts, but felt has come a long way baby!

Now we are making our own felt from wool roving. We needle felt or wet felt all kinds of things! Felt is high fashion. Felt is home décor. Felt is everywhere! Have you added felting to your creative projects yet?
