May 19, 2011 by Maria

I’m still on vacation, but wanted to share some island crafts to inspire you! This video notes which are the most popular island crafts, plus the variety of techniques and styles. Usually you’ll find crafts that have inexpensive supplies, use local naturals, and are focused on either keepsake or gift giving (you can’t come back from vacation without gifts for all your friends!).

What items do you usually pick up as keepsakes or gifts when you take a vacation? Do you look for handmade crafts?

Don’t miss tomorrow’s slide show of coconut inspired handmade crafts!

Guest Post: Making Your Own Souvenir Gifts to Bring Home From Vacation

May 9, 2011 by FaveCrafts

This guest blog post was written by Trisha Manning.
Everyone wants to take a little piece of paradise home when they return from vacation. That is why souvenirs are so popular. But truly special souvenirs are sometimes hard to find and are usually expensive. One way to take home a one-of-a-kind souvenir and save some money is to create your own souvenir gifts. You don’t have to be a craft wizard to do this since there are many options for creating unique, simple and inexpensive vacation souvenirs. The key is to choose the items that will most remind you of the special moments spent at a special place so that every time you look at them, you can revisit that time.

A Picture’s Worth a Thousand Words

This old adage is so true, especially for vacation photos. The best part is that these photos are your own, so they will truly be specific to your experience. Choose a photo or photos stored in your digital camera to print to t-shirts, mugs, calendars, and many other items. Photo collages you can frame also make nice souvenirs, especially if you decorate the frame with reminders of your trip such as ticket stubs. You can even create postcards with these photos and depending where and how long you are on vacation, have them printed and mailed right from the place. Using photos to create a special souvenir is also a great idea for an amusement park vacation. You can purchase some scrap booking supplies and use your printed photos to create a funny retelling of your experience.

Take The Beach Home With You
A beach vacation offers many ways to create your own souvenir. First, you can collect shells and other beach treasures on one of your walks. Don’t forget the sand. With these materials you can create your own beach in jar and bring the ocean back to you each time you look at it. Shells can also become simple earrings, necklaces or bracelets if you either use shells with little holes in them or make tiny holes in them to string together. You can purchase the rest of the things you need to make jewelry at a craft or bead store. How about using the shells to create a wind chime or another hanging ornament? Wire and string are all you will need besides your shells. Or you can decorate a frame with the shells and show off vacation pictures.

Go For That Nature Walk Again and Again

Collect dried flowers, twigs, leaves and rocks. These can be used to make collages you can hang. With some heavy cardboard, glue and your collected treasures you can easily make a collage or representation of your favorite panorama to take home with you. You can also use them to decorate the cover of a travel journal and then keep all your memories and even some photos in it. All these goodies can also be used to create a lasting centerpiece for your home, which will invite questions and give you opportunities to retell about your wonderful vacation.

Put That Art Class to Work

If you enjoy drawing or painting, a wonderful souvenir is to create your own watercolor pieces of the different places you visit. Simply take a small watercolor pad, some brushes and watercolors with you wherever you go and you’ll be set. Sit down somewhere peaceful and comfortable and spend your time not only admiring the view, but creating a special piece to take home with you. Once home, you can frame it and exhibit it, bringing back memories each time you look at it.

FaveCrafts 365 Drying Fruit for Crafting Part 2

March 25, 2011 by Maria

Slice it right! This video gets up close and personal with cutting fruit for drying. A brief review of the basics is also included. You can also dry fruit in an oven on very low temperature (around 200 degrees), but you can’t leave the oven unattended as you can when you use a dehydrator.  A quick tip is that you can find dehydrators at garage sales and thrift shops; you don’t have to purchase a new unit. Make sure you clean, rinse, and dry your trays after you complete your drying so you’ll be ready to go next time you need to dry naturals for your crafting.

119 Days Till Christmas: Pine Cones

August 28, 2009 by FaveCrafts

Pine cones fall from pine trees all year round, but particularly in the fall. Take a walk as the temperature begins to drop and collect the materials for these Christmas craft projects. Instead of using jarringly bright colors of red and green, these holiday decorations use natural nuts, pine cones and dried seed pods. Because they are neutral, these decorations can really be up anytime of year.

Natural Nut and Pinecone Christmas Tree Star, Stocking– Decorate inexpensive foam with natural materials for lovely, understated holiday ornaments.

Pine-cone Candle Holder– This natural candle holder makes a great centerpiece for your holiday table, whether Christmas or Thanksgiving.

ANd for those that must have color

Yo-Yo Stuffed Pinecone– Stuff a regular pine cone with yo-yos in various fabrics. Use holiday fabrics for Christmas decorating. Yo-Yo’s can also be used to make Christmas ornaments.

Hammer+Crafting=Ultimate Stress Relief

May 27, 2009 by FaveCrafts

I was stumbling along in the category of crafts when I came across this wonderful tutorial from Build/Make/Craft/Bake for making Hammerd Flower and Leaf Prints. Collecting flowers from my mother’s garden and pressing or drying them was one of my favorite hobbies growing up. Hammering leaves and flowers so that the natural dyes seep out onto paper is a great alternative way to to use flowers and leaves, perhaps before pressing or drying?

threemaples

The leaves used for this print are “Japanese Maple” and aren’t they lovely? The author of the tutorial, Wendy remarks, “Ahh the beauty of brute force.” This funny conclusion got me thinking. Hammering something with the result of a pretty craft has to be the ultimate stress relief. Do we have any hammering crafts at FaveCrafts? Why yes we do (of course).

  1. Hammered Copper Cuff Bracelet
  2. Garden Girl Plant Stake– Is it as satisfying to hammer with an eraser? If the median is pliable enough to be hammered repeatedly by an eraser, definitely.
  3. Copper Sunflower Garden Stake
