September 21, 2011 by TheCrochetCrowd

Crocheting Flowers is one of the most highest ideas searched for online. Flowers are great for adding to projects. Wonderful little motifs for hats, scarves, sweaters, and much more.

In cooperation with Bernat, here’s a cute little flower tutorial that you can follow along. I have done a twist to the pattern and make it more 3D in the look.

Hot Motifs For 2009

January 21, 2009 by Maria

When watching trends in art and craft you should take notice of what motifs you see over and over again. Noticing what motifs are getting exposure will help you understand how trends grow. A motif is a recurring theme, idea, form, shape, or dominant feature.

In card making over the last few years the motif of circles and squares (geometric shapes) has been a strong trend. Geometric shapes are easy to design with and easily give balance and harmony to overall design.

Jewelry is also using big, bold geometrical shapes. You can mix and match circles, ovals, squares, and triangles or stick with one shape and vary the sizes.

There are motifs that have been used for so long that the trend became a classic. Classics run in cycles, but there is always some form of a classic motif used through out art, craft, and home décor. Classic motifs include roses, hearts, teddy bears, angels, santas, crosses, roosters, insects (bees, butterflies, dragonflies), fruits (apple, pineapple, pear, grapes), goose, and trees (oak, palm, maple).

Trend experts are including angels, bees, roosters, grapes, and hearts as leading motifs in lifestyle for 2009. After researching current magazines and internet hot spots, I’d throw in chunky, bulky shapes and butterflies will be popping up in art, craft, fashion, and home décor.

Trends In The World of Creativity

January 14, 2009 by Maria

Trends by definition are techniques, motifs, colors, and supplies that grow in popularity over time versus a fad, which comes and goes in a blink of an eye. There are trends that are standing the test of time and should be taken into consideration when you are crafting, making gifts, selling your crafts, or shopping for product.

Trending Jargon

When reading trends reports it sometimes feels like I’m reading a foreign language, but there are some popular terms that all trend reports include. It does help if you understand what the trend report is really telling you.

Classic: a trend that has withstood the test of time like little black dresses, hearts, knitting

Fad: interest followed for a brief period of time with exaggerated zeal

Hue: name of the pure color

In: a popular trend or fad

Lifestyle: a general view of society’s habits, opinions, beliefs, and needs

Medium: material used such as fabric, paint, paper, or wood

Motif: a theme or shape like heart, floral, or wedding

Shade: a color plus black

Technique: skill used to create something like sewing, stenciling, hot glass or bleach stamping.

Theme: subject, topic, or motif such as nature, roses, or Christmas

Tint: a color plus white

Tone: a color plus gray

Out: a trend or fad that didn’t become classic
