AllFreeKnitting’s finished bear:

We like to call him Frankie after Frank Sinatra.  He’s classy – after all, just look at this bow tie!

Reader submissions:

Lori Matteson made this bear for the challenge.  I love its little face!

She also made this one – so cute:

Mother Bear Charity Challenge: Where’s My Face?

October 4, 2011 by AllFreeKnitting Leave a Comment

In case you missed it: AllFreeKnitting is participating in an exciting charity challenge: we’re going to knit a bear for the Mother Bear Project and we’d like for you to join us! If you’ve never heard of this organization before, all knit and crochet bears are made with a special pattern provided by the Mother Bear Project. Completed bears are sent to Africa where children affected by HIV/AIDS get to receive your thoughtful donations.

Progress Update!

Have you finished knitting your bear yet?  I almost have mine ready to send off to the Mother Bear Project –  he just needs a scarf and a face!  Do you have any suggestions or tips for embroidering faces?  This is my first time attempting it so any tips would be greatly appreciated. Just leave me a comment! 🙂

Remember, if you send us pictures of your bear (or bear in progress) or post your pictures on our Facebook wall by October 13, you’ll be entered into a contest for free yarn from AllFreeKnitting’s yarn stash.

Mother Bear Project Challenge: Half Way There!

Progress Update: Our Bear is Half Way There!

As promised, we’re going to show you our progress as we knit our own bear for the charity.  Last week our bear had legs.  This week my cuddly little guy has the front part of his sweater and its head.  I realize that it looks like a scarf with legs right now, but once the back is done, the arms are added, and it’s all seamed up, I promise it will look like a bear!

Slowly making progress on my knit bear

How much of your bear have you completed?

Remember, if you show us your progress, we’ll enter you into a contest for free yarn.

Mother Bear Project: I Have Legs!

September 16, 2011 by AllFreeKnitting 3 Comments

Hello fellow knitters and crocheters,

As many of you may have heard, AllFreeKnitting is participating in an exciting charity challenge: we’re going to knit a bear for the Mother Bear Project and we’d like for you to join us!  If you’ve never heard of this organization before, all knit and crochet bears are made with a special pattern provided by the Mother Bear Project.  Completed bears are sent to Africa where children affected by HIV/AIDS get to receive your thoughtful donations.  Want to win some yarn just by participating?  Send us photos of your bears by Oct. 13 and you’ll be entered into a special yarn giveaway!

Progress Update: Our Bear Has Legs!

As promised, we’re going to show you our progress as we knit our own bear for the charity.  Here’s what my cuddly little guy looks like so far:

That’s right, just the legs and feet so far, but I’m already super excited to keep going!  Because you’re encouraged to have fun with your bear, I’m planning on using several different kinds of stitches to make this cutie.  For the feet I used Bernat Soft Boucle yarn in the garter stitch.  I just love how the yarn makes the bear’s feet look so soft and cuddly.  You can find some cheap Bernat Soft Boucle yarn here.  For the bear’s pants (or trousers), I decided the classic stockinette stitch was the way to go.  Since I imagine my bear is a casual, laid back kind of guy, I figured he’d be wearing blue jeans.   Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Soft Navy was the perfect choice for these; I also happened to have some in my stash!

Stay tuned for our next post!  I’ve already started making the sweater. 🙂

Have any of you started making your bears yet?  How far are you?

Mother Bear Project Challenge: Knit a Bear, Make a Difference

September 14, 2011 by AllFreeKnitting 21 Comments

With just one bear, you can make a difference.

Join AllFreeKnitting in our exciting charity challenge: we’re going to knit a bear for the Mother Bear Project and we’d like for you to join us!  If you’ve never heard of this organization before, all knit and crochet bears are made with a special pattern provided by the Mother Bear Project.  Completed bears are sent to Africa where children affected by HIV/AIDS get to receive your thoughtful donations.  Love these photos from MotherBearProject.org – look how happy they are!

How to Get Started:

Ready to join us in our quest?  Thankfully – it’s easy!  To get started, you will need to purchase the Mother Bear Project’s bear pattern here.  All proceeds go directly to the charity and all donations must use this pattern.  This pattern was chosen because it’s lightweight and easy to ship.  There are knit and crochet patterns available so both crocheters and knitters feel free to participate!   Once you get your pattern and finish your bear, it can be dropped off at one of the drop off locations along with $3 here or sent to the address below (again with $3 to cover additional shipping/storage costs):

Mother Bear Project
P.O. Box 62188
Minneapolis, MN 55426

There’s a prize involved too!

Since we’ll be posting our progress every week, we’d love to see your progress, too.  Send us your photos of your completed bears either on our Facebook page or through our contact us page and on October 13, we’ll choose one lucky winner to receive some yarn from AllFreeKnitting’s stash!

And that’s all there is to it!  For any more information, please visit the Mother Bear Project website.  Stay tuned for our next post showing the progress of our first bear!  If you would like to help out, but are unable to make a bear, the Mother Bear Project is always looking for donations of worsted weight yarn, needles and more.  You can see a full list of needed items here as well as more information for how to get involved.
