Yarn Eye Candy… Introducing Koigu

May 30, 2011 by TheCrochetCrowd

Koigu KPPPM, (Koigu Painter’s Palette Premium Merino)

Many of our fine residents have no idea that within our region resides an amazing yarn manufacturer near Dornoch, Ontario. Remarkably, many retailers have no idea about this yarn company even though the company services North American and European markets with their high end yarn products. Introducing Koigu Wool Designs otherwise known as strictly Koigu.

Koigu was originally founded by Maie Landra and jointly controlled by her daughter Taiu Landra. Over time, the company has evolved with the forever changing marketplace and provides yarn products for weaving, knitting, and more. The yarns are extremely long lasting and brilliant in the colour selections.

Each piece that the consumer can make is completely unique as the yarn is hand painted by a colour dyeing artist. In a tour of the their facility, the “Rainbow Room” is the colour artists dream come true as colour mixing are limitless. They experiment with different colours that go from subtle to chaotic vibrant colours that you want to scoop up. The yarn is handled by a fantastic small team of people that take great care in the product that they are producing.

You usually can tell high end yarn due to the way it’s twisted up or braided. This is done because it shows a better indication on what colours are mixed into the skein. Some of their skeins are referred to as KPPPM with a number attached to it. It means… Koigu Painter’s Palette Premium Merino. Merino is a breed of sheep.

Koigu is a recognized yarn company producer that provides their products to internationally acclaimed designers that create the latest trends of clothing and hand made products. You sometimes see garments made from their yarn strutting down the catwalk. Many patterns and designs have been featured in Vogue Knitting and other high end publications.

This spring, Koigu celebrates its first ever edition of Koigu Magazine. It’s been a long time in the making to create their very own magazine that provides inspiration of knit and crochet designs for men and woman using their yarn. They also provide patterns inside as well.

It’s great to see local companies providing products to the global marketplace and being successful. You can find more information about Koigu on Facebook. Search Koigu in Facebook. They often update their Fan Page with the latest colour and ideas.
