Link Love: Inspired By Fairy Tales

May 16, 2013 by FaveCrafts 4 Comments

In a recent staff meeting, my fellow craft editors and I were discussing popular topics in e-mail newsletters (are you a subscriber?). During our conversation, we realized that fairy tale-inspired projects are particularly hot right now. It seems that crocheters, knitters, quilters and everyone in between wants to take a mental trip to another time and place where woodland creatures rule and fairies fly around all day long. We can all use a little mental vacation, and a one-way ticket to your favorite fairy land is completely free – what could be better?

You might think that fairy crafts are a little juvenile, but that isn’t always the case. In fact, there are so many lovely projects for craft experts as well as beginners. Add a touch of whimsy to your garden by decorating a plain ceramic pot with paint and paper doilies. A Floral Fairy Clay Pot can be displayed in your backyard or on your front stoop and will instantly put you in a good mood. Be sure to include embellishments such as homemade bread dough flowers and jewelry chains to give your project a personal touch. Now that the outside of your home is covered with fairy tale touches, it’s time to think indoor decor. Grab a clean recycled mason jar and get to work on a Recycled Fairy Jar. Create a woodland habitat inside the glass and add in a plastic fairy, sheet moss and silk flowers. If you love needlefelting or simply want to try something new, create a Whimsical Fairy Nymph – little girls will love this tiny handmade doll!

The next time you feel stressed or anxious, consider creating a fairy or woodland-inspired craft. These projects will transport you to a calm, happy place filled with fairies and adorable creatures. While you can’t stay in the woodlands forever, you can capture your favorite aspects and keep a little piece of the magic with you at all times.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Earth Day: Bottle and Jar Christmas Crafts

April 15, 2013 by AllFreeChristmasCrafts 2 Comments

Listen up, crafters! Earth Week is fast approaching, and that means it’s time to be mindful of waste. A lot of you out there are brilliant at using up your supplies dutifully. However, there are still more ways you can use would-be trash. Some of what you think is junk can be used to create awesome Christmas crafts. By the time Christmas rolls around, though, you may not have  any of the supplies needed to make these awesome bottle and jar crafts. Start saving your bottles and jars now so you can practice green Christmas crafting and celebrate Earth Day. These bottle and jar craft ideas will truly ignite your Christmas spirit.

Wine and Dine with Bottle Crafts

Faux Lighted Wine BottleUpcycled Wine VaseHemingway is quoted as saying, “My only regret in life is that I did not drink more wine.” Keep this in mind so that you won’t regret not making more wine bottle crafts. Imagine Christmas crafting through life without trying your hand at this Faux Lighted Wine Bottle. A Christmas without this dynamite bottle craft is pretty lame. If you don’t want to get that technical, you can still recycle wine bottles and make great Christmas decorations out them. This Upcycled Wine Vase is a perfect example. During that holiday party use this DIY vase as a decorative element and conversation piece.

Recyled Champagne Cork BearBottle Cap Picture TreeDon’t forget about those corks and bottle caps. Among other things, Christmas spirits produce corks and bottle caps that usually get tossed. Instead of filling up your trash can with corks, make this Recycled Champagne Cork Bear. You can make this out of 100% recycled materials. I’m also wild about this Bottle Cap Picture Tree. It combines unconventional elements with the classic Christmas Tree.

Merry Mason Jar Crafts We Love You Jar

Mason Jar Pin CushionsOf course, we can’t ignore the tireless trend of mason jar crafts that’s cleaning out recycling bins everywhere. I love these crafts! You can get as simple as this We Love You Jar or go a step further and make something more complicated. These Mason Jar Pin Cushions from Stolen Moments are an example of how creative you can get with mason jars, and how functional they can be. Mason Jar Lanterns

While perusing the internet, I also came across Intimate Weddings which had these awesome Mason Jar Lanterns posted. These DIY mason jar lanterns, though designed with weddings in mind, could easily become a key component to your homemade Christmas decorations. Just hang them up away from the little ones…

Holiday Lantern OrnamentsSimilarly, our site features this Holiday Lantern Ornament. Can you believe how festive this homemade Christmas decoration looks? The light against the pine needles is truly enchanting.

Beautiful Sparkling Snow GlobeAnd of course, one of my personal favorite Christmas mason jar crafts: the snow globe. I love this Beautiful Sparkling Snow Globe. It’s so simple but brings so much joy in the way it recalls Christmases of yore. These Christmas bottle and jar crafts are just the tip of the iceberg. Find out how else you can make recycled Christmas crafts by checking out our site. Earth Day is just around the corner, and what better way to honor our planet than with the fervor of the Christmas spirit?

Are you going to make recycled Christmas crafts this year?

How to Make a Sun Jar

May 26, 2010 by FaveCrafts 2 Comments

Illuminate your garden or outdoor patio this season with gorgeous sun jars that look rustic and chic. Using solar lighting, sun jars use sunlight to light up your backyard after dark, so the party doesn’t stop. Have a late-night barbecue with your best friends or a romantic evening sipping wine on the patio with your beloved. Solar sun jars are my favorite DIY project for the outdoors and they’re easy to make with a few materials from the hardware store.

Materials:

  • Solar Garden Lights – found at your local hardware store.
  • Mason Jars with Transparent Lid –
  • AA Batteries, rechargeable
  • Blu-tack or other reusable putty adhesive
  • Utility knife
  • Glass frosting spray
  • Screwdriver

Steps:

  1. Take apart the solar lights using the screwdriver and utility knife.
  2. With the blu-tack, affix the parts and batteries to the inside lid of the mason jar.
  3. Spray the outside of the jar with glass frosting spray to diffuse the light.
  4. Put the jar by a window to charge the batteries with the solar panel.
  5. Use your jars to light up your next outdoor party!

Have fun decorating with your new sun jars that look like you captured the sun, literally. If you like this project, check out these Tin Can Luminaries and Easy Party Lights to add extra lighting to an outdoor event.
