Link Love: 35 Trendy DIY Jewelry

July 24, 2015 by FaveCrafts

One of the common misconceptions about DIY jewelry is that they don’t look like store-bought or that they aren’t trendy and fashionable. We are here to prove them wrong! Homemade jewelry is absolutely gorgeous and there are endless possibilities with what you can do with it. There’s clay jewelry, metalwork, beaded, wire work, and so many other options for what you can make. As long as you have the right tools and an endless imagination, you can make anything you think of. Can’t find the right leather bracelet? That’s why you make it yourself and use the materials that you are imagining. Stop settling for the options that are given to you, and learn how to make jewelry the way you want it to look.

Trendy Jewelry

I feel like every woman owns at least three full sized jewelry boxes, and a couple trinket boxes. Each one symbolizes the phase that represents of that time in her life. For example, I have a small, about a foot high, box that is labeled for each type of jewelry in bright colors and flower knobs—obviously, that was my childhood phase where I kept everything and it was just the awful kid jewelry. Then I have one that is wooden, same size, and has glass doors that have a hanger to hold my necklaces. My “adult” jewelry box is the full length mirror that opens up to hold all of my nice, jewelry, DIY statement necklaces, wire work projects, and anything that needs a little extra love.

Then again, that might be just me trying to put a reason behind the hoard of boxes I have—an English major problem. I’ll just say it is an attempt to organize jewelry. Everything on this giant list of link love looks like something that has been bought in a store. I love the homemade rings with a sideways gem or incredible metalwork. Statement necklaces haven’t gone away yet, and honestly, I hope they never do. They’re an easy way to add some flair to a plain outfit. There’s something for everyone on this giant list. With all the options for cute DIY jewelry, I’ll have to buy another jewelry box for that period in my life where I go “crazy for crafting” (which is all the time!).

Link Love: Macrame Crafts Are Knot Your Average Home Decor

July 18, 2015 by AllFreeJewelryMaking

I will be honest, I had never heard of macrame before. I didn’t even know how to use it in a sentence! So it came as a surprise when I typed it into Google and find that it’s just knots. (I’m sorry to those of you who already know what it is, but bear with me for a few lines.) Homemade macrame jewelry is what mostly comes up. Basically, it’s a series of knots assembled in a way to hold stuff of varying sizes. It normally uses cotton, linen, yarn, or rope—what you choose to use for macrame materials usually depends on what you’re doing with it. If you’re making macrame jewelry, then you can use a lighter string with beads. For right now, however, I wanted to explore what other options macrame crafting has to offer.

So what do I go to first? Home decor. Living in the city gives me an awesome urban background to try a hipster/urban-chic decorations. These DIY home decor ideas are a great way to bring a little Bohemian-chic into your home. They may remind you of those corner-hanging-lamps with the tassels and the psychedelic coloring, but the modern world has transformed the hipster decorating ideas. These designs call for basic knot-tying skills such as square knots and overhand knots and are an up-and-coming trend for home decor. Don’t both spending money, let alone attempting to find the exact color and fabric you want, at a store when you can use any fabric, in any color, for your own color scheme.

Macrame Wheat Grass Eggs from The Merry Thought

Macrame Rope Wall-hanging from Miss Amy Phipps

Macrame Plant Holder from Classy Clutter

Macrame Yarn Garland from A Beautiful Mess

DIY Hanging Macrame Chair from Classy Clutter

Macrame Herb Hanger

Although most of the items that the macrame is holding are potted plants, you can use these to hold about anything. You can use a garden gazing globe and create beautiful colored light inside your home. It can be used as a hanging storage place for your child’s stuffed animals. This is a trending craft that will work for whatever setting you have in your home. Even try it outside to hang your hanging plants. Urban, Bohemian, country, rustic… These rope crafts are going to be the hottest thing to make!

Where and what will you use macrame for?

Link Love: How to Make a Scarf for Spring or Summer

May 8, 2015 by FaveCraftsBlog

If you were to ask my husband how many scarves I own, he would probably say something close to, “Too many,” or “A ba-jillion.” While he may be pretty accurate with those statements, there are so many ways to wear scarves for each season that I can’t possibly ever have too many scarves. On that note, I should probably get going on making my own scarves for a change. I crochet quite frequently and I loved making this crochet scarf that I wore in my engagement photos, but now that it’s spring I really want to make a DIY fabric scarf.

I have expensive taste and I love the designer looks, but I definitely hate the designer price. So, I set out on a mission to find the perfect DIY scarf – and ended up finding 17 free patterns that have stolen my heart. I do apologize in advance for the high number of infinity scarves in this list if you don’t like them. (Scratch that, I actually did a pretty good job mixing normal scarves and infinity scarves in this list). Infinity scarves are my absolute favorite so you’ll just have to deal. 😉 (or, you know, just not sew the ends together and voila, you’ve got a normal scarf)

Sewing an infinity scarf will be my next adventure in the crafting world. I’m excited because making an easy infinity scarf has been on my crafting list for awhile. With each infinity scarf tutorial below you’ll be itching to pull out your sewing machine. Learn how to make a infinity scarf or just how to make a fabric scarf just by checking out these awesome patterns. And of course, free patterns our the fave here at FaveCrafts so enjoy!

Link Love: How To Make a DIY Globe

April 10, 2015 by FaveCraftsBlog

Sometimes you come across a craft idea that literally makes you exclaim, “WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE?!” and this was one those times. As soon as I saw that crafters were creatively upcycling old, vintage, or even damaged globes – I was hooked. The DIY Globe may not be a brand new craft idea, but there are certainly fantastic ways to create your own. I look up a bunch of ideas and just had to hare my favorites!

The best part about the tutorials below is that they are all free. I kept getting frustrated when I’d find a DIY globe that was just a photo and not a tutorial. So I saved you the hassle and found only globes with free tutorials. I love the wide variety of styles that I found and how each globe seems to have its own personality. It’s as if each globe is a blank canvas and you get to make it your own. I won’t get too philosophical on you, but it’s very much like life. The world is what you make of it, right?

Upcycling these globes really puts a nice spin on “Earth” Day (April 22!). I love that we are putting our creativity to good use and keeping old globes out of dumpsters and landfills. Plus, you get to showcase your love for the earth and traveling by putting one of these on display in your living room. DIY home decor is all about finding those few unique objects that will really make your space complete. I fully believe that one of these DIY globes will complete your room and make it really special.

7 Lucky Horseshoe Crafts

February 23, 2015 by FaveCrafts

You don’t have to have a western themed home to embrace the horseshoe. Horseshoes are now almost a staple in modern and rustic decor. There are some really talented Etsy sellers that have mastered the art of crafting with horseshoes and I envy them most days! I only have horseshoes from my horseback riding days and finding them at the barn. I also have some vintage horseshoes from my grandfather when he worked on a farm in Wisconsin as a boy. I treasure those horseshoes and I don’t think i could alter them in any way. However, I do plan to look for some horseshoes at antique shops this summer – and you can too!

There is a debate as to which way horseshoes are to be hung in a home. Some say that hanging them with the open side upwards keeps all the good luck in the home. If the horseshoe is turned upside down, the luck will fall out, which will bring bad luck to the home. Others seem to say that turning the horseshoe upside down lets all of the luck pour out into the home. For me, an upside down horseshoe makes me cringe!

With St. Patrick’s Day coming up and my love of horseshoes and anything related to horses, I’ve gathered up 7 Lucky Horseshoe Crafts we can all try. Similar to the horseshoe debate, there is also the “lucky” debate between four leaf clovers and three leaf clovers. Growing up, I always knew that finding a four leaf clover was next to impossible – but after hours in a field at day camp, I finally found one. But if you’re Irish (and I am a little bit Irish), you know that the three leaf clover is the traditional symbol, the shamrock. People tend to get hot-headed over this difference for some reason. I promise you, no matter which way you hang your horseshoe or which clover you like best, there’s lots of good luck to spread around before St. Patrick’s Day!

Link Love: The DIY Dreamcatcher

January 23, 2015 by FaveCrafts

Channel your inner bohemian because dreamcatchers are back. Or they never left. Either way, these whimsical and lovely pieces have taken the spotlight in home decor and now you can learn to make your own.

“What are dream catchers?” you ask? Well, according to Google, the dreamcatcher meaning is:

“a small hoop containing a horsehair mesh, or a similar construction of string or yarn, decorated with feathers and beads, believed to give its owner good dreams. Dreamcatchers were originally made by American Indians.”

When I was a kid, I always thought of dreamcatchers as catching the bad dreams. I suppose the would then be called “nightmare catchers” which doesn’t sound quite as happy. Oh well.  Today we’ve rounded up our fave diy dreamcatchers for your enjoyment. If you’ve ever wondered “How do you make a dreamcatcher?” and wanted to transform your room into a magical and dreamy land, these pictures of dream catchers will inspire you. Making a diy dream catcher doesn’t have to be difficult or time consuming. We found a variety of traditional and more modern dreamcatchers for you to try. Use yarn, twine, vintage doilies, thread, or anything you see fit to create the dreamcatcher of your dreams. I think I have some vintage doilies lying around that I think could use a new prupose in life. Plus, vintage doilies are always in antique shops just waiting for a new home. I know what I’m doing this summer in Michigan!

Part of what makes each dreamcatcher unique is the different feathers and beads you can use to complete the design. Learn how to make a simple dreamcatcher and keep dreaming my friends!

Link Love: DIY Antlers

January 16, 2015 by FaveCrafts

It’s time for a somewhat unusual link love post, but unusual in the best way. Because, quite frankly, these craft projects are actually becoming more and more common and we don’t hate them. In fact, there are plenty of reasons crafting with antlers is actually quite amazing.

Some things to note before you send PETA after me.

  • Deer, and other antlered animals, shed their antlers naturally
  • Some, if not all, of the projects below can be made using fake antlers (plastic, plaster, etc) that you can probably find online somewhere
  • I don’t like hunting. I am not supporting killing deer in any way at all.

These antler projects are trending all over the place. I’ve seen antlers in home decor magazines and there are TONS of  painted antlers on Etsy that are simply gorgeous. These diy antler projects will inspire you to use this renewable resource in your home decor. I like to think of it as a “rustic meets modern” sort of project. We can all see the natural element in these antler craft ideas and by bringing nature indoors, we are admiring and bringing beauty in our homes. Appreciate the natural and abstract shape of antlers and embrace the uniqueness of each one. Plus, there are even diy faux antlers that you can try to make. Learn how to make antlers with paper mache or even clay and you’ll love the result. Painting deer antlers is just one way to make these natural pieces a little more urban and chic.  It’s time to make deer antlers a part of your home decor this year.
