6 Crafty Ways to Say “I Love You”

February 10, 2012 by AllFreeHolidayCrafts Leave a Comment

For us crafty gals, sometimes the best way to express our feelings is through our work.  I know that whenever I want to show someone how I feel, I always wind up making them something.  Whether it’s a scrapbook for my mom’s birthday, a sewn necktie for Father’s Day or just a special handmade card for a friend’s birthday, handmade “labors of love” are always my go-to gifts.

So, with Valentine’s Day just a few short days away, I thought I’d share some of my favorite crafty ways to say “I love you” to that special someone.  And don’t worry if you don’t have enough time to finish these before February 14th. The great thing about all of these projects is they’ll be just as meaningful any time of year.  You can make these for birthdays, anniversaries and other milestones, or even better… as a “just because” present.  Aren’t those the best kind of gift?!

Handmade Cards – One of the easiest ways to say “I love you” is with a card you’ve made yourself!  It doesn’t have to look super professional; it just has to come from the heart!  If you’re looking for inspiration, this “Love You” note card and envelope is one of my favorites, but I also love this Charming Heart Card and the Treasured Love card.

Decorative Picture Frames – If you’re not the craftiest person, picture frames are a great project for you to tackle. You can give yours a personal touch and include a special photo of one of your favorite memories!  These Fancy Frames are so elegant looking, and this Lovely Lace Frame would be perfect for a girly girl.

Flowers from Yarn – Who doesn’t love receiving flowers?  The only thing I don’t like about it is mine tend to die pretty quickly, and nothing’s sadder than a wilting rose. So, why not make that special someone a flower or bouquet that will last forever!  This knitted Peruvia rose is beautiful, and so is this crocheted Always Blooming Bouquet.

Gifts with Photos – Turn your favorite picture of you and your loved one into a keepsake they can display in their home!  I love this personalized photo clock and also these reversible family photo placemats (though it might be sort of strange to eat your dinner on top of your cousin’s face, it’s still super cute as a kitchen decoration!).  You can also preserve special memories in the form of a cute accessory with this Glass Photo Pendant.  Speaking of jewelry…

Jewelry – If there’s a lady in your life who you want to shower with gifts of love, there’s no better present than handmade jewelry!  Make her this “Live, Laugh, Love” charm bracelet and she’ll make it part of her everyday wardrobe; I guarantee it!  I also love the idea of this hidden message locket!

Sweets – The way to just about anyone’s heart is through their stomach, or at least that’s the way the saying goes. So, if you really want to show your love, make them a sweet treat!  Chocolate is almost universally loved, so why not make them these Love Struck Chocolates?  Or even better, how about this Amazing and Edible Chocolate Body Scrub?! If you want to go the candy route, you could always whip up a batch of homemade Conversation Candy Hearts.  And they might not be edible, but these chocolate-inspired crochet patterns would definitely be a hit with anyone who has even the tiniest bit of a sweet tooth!  Check out the Amigurumi Chocolate Fountain, the Heart Shaped Box of Chocolates and the Hot Chocolate Amigurumi!

Have you ever made someone a homemade gift?  What did you make?

Donate Homemade Scarves to the Special Olympics

December 5, 2010 by FaveCrafts 5 Comments

I just found out about this really cool way to donate your crochet and knit projects! We’ve talked about crocheting for charity, knitting for charity, and sewing for charity before, and now there’s another charity to add to the list:

The Special Olympics is teaming up with Red Heart Yarns in an effort to collect scarves for participating Olympians. Why scarves? The Vice President of Marketing at Coats & Clark, Alyson Bell, explains, “The Scarf Project is an opportunity to create a handmade gift for the athletes, coaches, families, volunteers and supporters who can wear with pride knowing that it is crafted with love.”

Crocheters and knitters are invited to make a scarf (or two, or three…) to donate to their states’ participants  in order to show their support for the Special Olympics. Want to get involved? Here’s how:

  • Go to the official charity website for complete details.
  • Scarves must be knit or crocheted using the official 2011 colors: Red Heart Super Saver 886 Blue and Red Heart Super Saver 512 Turqua.
  • You can use any knitting or crochet scarf pattern you want, but scarves must be 54-60 inches long and 6 inches wide. You can be as creative with the design as you want! Here are some free patterns that you’re free to use:

Crochet:

Beginner Striped Scarf

Crochet Granny Square Scarf

Colorful Block Scarf

And check out all of our crochet scarf patterns here.
Knit:

Cable Knit Scarf

Chevron Scarf

Chic Diagonal Stripe Scarf

And check out all of our knit scarf patterns here.

When you visit the official site, choose your state from the drop-down menu to find out which sports your state participates in, how many scarves they need donated, where to mail completed scarves to, and what the deadline to send scarves in is. For Illinois, the deadline is January 18, 2011.

Happy knitting and crocheting!

Christmas Countdown: Festive Stockings!

October 17, 2010 by FaveCrafts Leave a Comment

Ever since I can remember, Christmas has always been my favorite holiday.  When I was little, I recall getting so excited to see all of my cousins and grandparents for our festive celebration.  What I remember most, though, are Christmas stockings. Before leaving for my grandparent’s house on Christmas day, my mom would hang stockings on the mantel the night before.  When she was sure that my brother and I were asleep, she’d stuff them full of goodies – chocolate, cd’s, scarves and fruit just to name a few things.  It was always fun waking up to see all of the treats and little presents she left inside.

Do you hang stockings on the mantel for Christmas?  If you haven’t in the past, it’s never too late to start a new tradition!  The best part is that Christmas stockings are relatively easy Christmas crafts to put together.  Even if you don’t want to use the stockings to hold random presents and stocking stuffers, they also make for great decorations during the holidays.  At the very least, you could make a few to giveaway as gifts to your loved ones!

This Monday’s Quick and Crafty newsletter features over 20 of the cutest stocking patterns you could ever find.  Here’s a sneak peak at a few of the patterns featured:

Favorites Friday: Spring Crafts

April 3, 2009 by FaveCrafts Leave a Comment

Ahh, spring is in the air. Isn’t it fantastic? The bright red tulips in our back garden are opening up and bushes are starting to bloom. Luckily, my desk is right next to sliding doors out to the garden, so I can occasionally stare lovingly at the emerging colors.  Here in Ireland, April is considered the short “Irish Summer,” because it will likely have the most sunny days, as opposed to rainy days throughout the traditional summer months. With such a small window of sun, I’m going to soak up the rays like a reptile as much as possible.  In the spirit of sunny and colorful spring, the editors here at FaveCrafts have put together a round-up of favorite spring crafts:

My Picks

  1. Tonya Staab of Currently Crafting shares a knitting pattern with us for a punnet of strawberries. Strawberries are in season right now and these won’t spoil!

  2. Friendly plastic is a fun material with which to create homemade jewelry and there are some great projects for spring at FaveCrafts.com. I love this butterfly necklace project, designed by Jane Ewy for Amaco.

  3. These crochet doily bowls are easy to create and would be perfect for an Easter brunch or other spring meal.  Use this doily crochet pattern to create the doily or choose your own.
