Best Yarn for Baby Patterns: 3 Tips for Your Next Project

March 28, 2017 by FaveCrafts

Has this ever happened to you? Your sister or best friend has announced that she’s expecting, so one of your first thoughts is that you should knit or crochet an adorable baby blanket. If you’re a crafter, it’s only natural that you want to welcome the newest addition to your family by giving a handmade item. From baby blankets to wee little booties, the possibilities for making handmade items are almost endless. Need a little helping finding the best yarn for baby patterns? Then you’re in the right place.

Machine-Washable Yarn? Yes, Please!

Types of Yarn for Knitting or Crochet

What is the best type of yarn to use in your next project?

You’ve selected the perfect baby pattern to knit or crochet, so now it’s time to think yarn! When selecting the best yarn for baby patterns, some types of yarn would be better choices than others for your project than others. Because let’s be honest. While babies are cute and cuddly, they can also be messy. Really messy. And for many bleary-eyed new parents, trying to figure out the best way to launder a beautiful knit blanket or hat is low on the to-do list. With that in mind, consider acrylic yarn for your project. This type of yarn is typically machine-washable and easy to clean. If you’d like, you can also print care instructions on pretty paper, then attach the paper to your handmade item. The new parents will appreciate having instructions on how to clean the beautiful baby blanket you made right at their fingertips.

Select Yarn That Is As Soft As Can Be

For many people, the thought of wearing a wool sweater right against the skin sounds, to put it politely, uncomfortable. Babies will feel the same way. Their skin is sensitive, so putting a baby in an itchy wool blanket or sweater will make them feel annoyed. And an uncomfortable baby is a baby who will probably cry a lot. What’s a knitter or crocheter to do? Use yarn that feels soft to you for use in your pattern. If that yarn feels itchy, then The Spruce suggests putting it back and selecting another type of yarn. If you’re purchasing your yarn online, then consider opting for yarn that is specifically for use in baby patterns. For example, Red Heart Baby Hugs Yarn is warm, soft, and colorful. It is also free from harmful levels of substances (you can check out a review of this time via AllFreeCrochet.com). Other brands, including Lion Brand and Bernat, offer a selection of yarns that are just for babies, too.

Bulky Yarn Is Your Friend For Last-Minute Gifts

Let’s face it: Babies are born on their own schedules, and they’re almost never on time. If you’re looking for a baby item that can be made in a tight time frame due to a little one’s early arrival, then turn your attention to beautiful bulky yarn patterns. These baby patterns are typically quick and easy to make. This type of yarn is best for baby patterns that are no-frills, but are still beautiful and warm and will make a wonderful keepsake. You’ll love how quick and easy it is to crochet or knit a baby blanket with this yarn if time is of the essence.

The Cutest Baby Crafts You’ve Ever Seen (Seriously!)

September 11, 2014 by FaveCrafts

Want to make a big impression at the next baby shower you attend? Here’s an ideas – give the absolute best gift. Sure, the new mommy is supposed to be the star of the show, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your own moment in the spotlight. Among a sea of store-bought items, your handmade gift is sure to stand out, and we think that’s awesome!

What items meant the most to you when you were a tot? For me, it was my crocheted baby blanket. My mom received the blanket as a gift and it grew up right along  with me. Handmade items are so much more likely to become keepsakes and leave a lasting impression on the recipient. Be that memorable person and make something meaningful for your next baby shower or celebration. Fair warning about sometime hormonal moms to be – they may not be able to contain their excitement, enthusiasm and appreciation.

Crochet For Babies

Today, we’re shining the spotlight on crochet baby patterns. There are so many ways to make a delightful baby gift – all you need is a hook and some yarn. If you’re short on time, make a hat or toy. If you’re willing to put in a little extra time and effort, create an afghan or baby sweater. No matter, what the results are sure to wow everyone! The finished crochet piece will keep kids warm, toasty and comfy. New mommies – do you know what that means? Less crying and more (adorable) giggling from your bundle of joy. What could be bad about that?

More Super Cute Baby Crafts

If you can’t crochet, you’re in luck – there are plenty of other ways to create adorable baby gifts. Knit, sew or craft something that a baby can wear or a new mom can display. Any hip youngster needs cool looking threads, so step up to the plate and make sure they don’t disappoint! Your homemade designs will make everyone say “Awwwww”,  so prepare accordingly. Baby crafts are fun to make because they can be over-the-top, so experiment with bright colors and wild designs. When it comes to DIY projects for kids the more eye-catching your design is, the better!

Frog Crafts for Leap Day Are Hoppin’

February 29, 2012 by FaveCrafts

February 29th is considered Leap Day because the day doesn’t occur every year. It likes to leap every four years. If we didn’t have this one extra day every now and then, the seasonal calendar would eventually be thrown off. This means one extra day of crafting! So hop to it!

We’re pairing up Leap Day with frog crafts. And nothing is cuter than some froggy baby patterns! There are also a lot of patterns for stuffed toys that will get you leaping for joy. And I found plenty of other fun frog activities with our fine amphibian friends.

Baby Patterns for Little Tadpoles

What’s green and has buggy eyes? A baby in froggy accessories! Knit this adorable Froggy Hat and Socks or a Baby Cocoon with a hat and booties. These would be awesome frog crafts to make for any leap year baby. And I just have to share this free baby Frog Suit tutorial from Wacky Baby Knits that I found on Etsy.

Froggy Stuffed Toys

Make some cool frogs with these patterns for stuffed toys. (Get it? Cool frogs, cold-blooded.) Some Little Frogs are pocket-sized and will fit right in the palm of your hand. Others are a bit bigger like crocheted Freddy the Frog or Ribbit Knit Frog. Then there are the charming ones like this Frog Prince from Lil Blue Boo.

Creative Frog Activities

Make plenty of other frog crafts with different types of materials. Use any one of these froggy cross stitch kits to do some fun stitching. You can get the kids crafting, make some paper plate frogs with this tutorial from Mommyapolis. Or have them make an Eco Froggy Bank. It’s a green craft in more than one way. Kids will love feeding this frog their change and letting it save for them.

What are you making on this extra crafting day?

Meet and Make: Heather Tucker

January 27, 2012 by AllFreeKnitting

This week’s Meet and Make designer is Heather Tucker. Heather is as much of a knitter as she is a mathematician.  Because she thinks mathematically, all of her designs have elements of shape, angle, texture and symmetry; everything, in other words, that should appeal to a logical mind. She has always l0ved experimenting and creating, but has only recently developed an interest in writing her patterns down. You can find more of her knitting patterns on her blog, Mama’s Stitchery Projects.

Let’s meet Heather!

10 Fun Facts about Heather:

1.  I have an amateur radio license and emergency tags for my car.
2.  I was an actuary for 17 years before retiring to be a stay-at-home mom.
3.  As a child I liked to make my own toys.
4.  I have been knitting and crocheting since I was four years old.
5.  The only trophy I have ever won was for math.
6.  I ran a computer bulletin board for several years.
7.  I have 12 computers and devices in my house named after M*A*S*H characters.
8.  In my high school I held the record for solving a Rubik’s cube in 30 seconds.
9.  I’m known for my salad making skills.
10.  I got married after being engaged for eight days.

Here’s Heather’s Project:

12 month – 16″ circumference, 7″ high
Toddler – 18″ circumference, 7.5″ high

Abbreviations:

c4f = cable 4 forward – Slip the next 2 stitches onto cable needle and hold in front of work. Knit the next 2 stitches from left-hand needle, knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle.

sk2p = slip 1, knit 2 together, pass slip stitch over the knit 2 together; 2 stitches have been decreased

Materials:

  • 0.5 to 1.5 oz (40 to 120 yards) of DK weight baby yarn

Creativity Has No Borders – American Flag Baby Hats

June 3, 2010 by TheCrochetCrowd

Hey Everyone, it’s Mikey from Mikeyssmail in Canada. I’m the guy who films video tutorials for AllFreeCrochet.com for you to learn free crochet and loom knitting techniques on You Tube. I absolutely love crafting with yarn. I’m not sure what I would do without having string dragging across in my hands to form blankets, hats, and so much more. I get bored fast with projects and my mother taught me to change colour often to keep the momentum going.

I have been on this kick on creating Loom Knitted Baby New Born Hats. I love creating them as they are quick and usually within one hour you go from a ball of yarn to a real project that can be worn by a baby.  Watch this one-minute video that shows you some of my designs.

Originally I was going to create a Candy Cane Hat but then it occurred to me… add some BLUE and I got myself an American Flag Baby Hat. I came up with 3 different designs and I am so excited by them. The colours of the American Red, White & Blue really motivated me to create something that Americans could enjoy. I am open to an official name to call these hats. If you have any ideas I would love to hear them.

I posted the How To Video on making an American Flag Baby Hat and

I received a very touching email from a viewer who was a new mom on a Military Base. Her husband is serving in the Middle East and when she saw my designs, she was so excited she made 9 hats within one day. She is saving them for the wives on the base for when they have their own babies. She was so delighted that her energy and creativity shone through her email to me… essentially touching my heart at the same time.

I love how my idea really inspired another person outside my own country. I’m struggling with creating my own Canadian Version but I know the idea will come eventually. Creativity is borderless and it’s amazing how a simple idea such as this can inspire another person far away to be excited and create with enthusiasm.

Gift Sunday: Baby Shower Mania

January 24, 2010 by FaveCrafts

I don’t know about all of you, but I know a ton of pregnant women! So many babies coming in 2010! That said, I’ll be attending several baby showers this year… and likely hosting a couple… so I’ve been looking at different ways to prepare for the upcoming showers, without being too redundant. Pink and Blue are pretty standard staples, but there are plenty of fun ways to play with other details to keep each baby shower unique and equally precious.

Here are some of my favorite baby shower gifts and decorations:
