Free Knitting Patterns for Fall

July 31, 2015 by FaveCrafts

Okay, so it’s a little difficult to imagine wearing, let alone knitting, a sweater, scarf, shawl, or gloves. Especially when it is nearly July and the temperatures are soaring quickly into the 90’s. But all those things take time to make people! Before you know it, school is going to be starting and the leaves will be turning colors, and then panic mode will set in because you didn’t get a head start. Never fear, though, I compiled the biggest list of free knitting patterns for fall. You’re going to feel so cozy in these knit sweaters, homemade knit scarves, and fuzzy mittens.

Warm, homemade sweaters are going to be your favorite thing to make this summer because by the time you get done with all these easy sweater patterns, it will be time to wear them! All of your friends and family will be begging you to make them one of the fun and stylish knits for the fall instead of spending money at the store. You can get unique colors and patterns that match your personality and all of your winter wear. I don’t know about you, but I hate mismatched coats and accessories. I think the worst that has ever happened is a purple jacket with a red and black scarf, and green gloves. Yeah. Nothing matched. I really wish I had this awesome list of fall and winter knitting patterns, so I could have been strutting around with some stylish warmth.

So don’t make the same mistake as me. You have plenty of time before the season starts to change, but there are so many options that you won’t know where to begin. Let me help you. I would start with simple scarf patterns. In my mind, they are the fastest to get done. So if you’re knitting for more than just yourself, then these are the first and easiest thing to get done. Next, I would knit an easy hat for winter. That way, you get use out of it for both seasons, and they will look so cute with everything you wear!

So get your needles ready for this fall knitting spree because you’re going to need to start early for all these free knitting patterns!

Stay Warm: Our Favorite Hat Patterns for Winter

October 3, 2014 by FaveCrafts

Take cover! With the end of fall comes the beginning of winter and you know what that means – hello, freezing temperatures! Don’t wait until it’s too late and (pardon the pun) get caught out in the cold. Instead, start working on one of these crochet or knit hat patterns now and use it all year long. Whether you prefer a hook or can’t live without a pair of needles, there are plenty of free patterns on FaveCrafts to satisfy your DIY craving. Don’t spend big money on a simple beanie you could easily create at home. Use that money on something else (a warm beverage perhaps?) and show off your considerable craft skills.

We’ve pulled together some of our favorite knit and crochet patterns to keep you busy all autumn long. Make a hat for yourself and a few for family or friends – this is a great Christmas gift option!

Hat Knitting Patterns

If you knit, you know it takes a while to complete a project. For this reason, it’s important start working on these hats today. That way, you’ll never have to leave home without a warm head covering. There are plenty of options for hat patterns and you can make one for everyone in your family. This year, give a handmade Christmas gift that people can actually use. It’s fair to say you might become a very popular gift giver, so prepare yourself for plenty of requests and compliments.

Why not test your skills and create a single-color beanie or hat? If you have a little more crochet experience under your belt, try your hand at a more complicated pattern like the Faux Trapper Hat. After all, who wouldn’t love to receive a big flouncy hat during the holiday season?

In Case You Missed It: “11 Christmas Gift Ideas: Handmade Scarves, Hats and More”

July 14, 2013 by AllFreeChristmasCrafts

I am a huge fan of festive attire at any time of year. During the summer, I create wearable crafts with more color than in fall or winter. Around Halloween, I bust out the orange and black and go a little heavier on the eye makeup. At Easter, it’s pastels at all times, and pretty dresses.

The same trend holds true, of course, around Christmastime. Bring on the ugly sweaters, the handmade hats, the holiday earrings. You better believe I’ll find an excuse to wear my knee-high green and red striped socks, and I’ll roll up my skinny jeans to show them off, proudly. To me, nothing says “I’m getting in the holiday spirit” like dressing up in wearable crafts.

You can make great wearable crafts for the holidays when you download the 11 Christmas Gift Ideas: Handmade Scarves, Hats and More eBook! Christmas wearable crafts are perfect gifts for anyone on your Christmas list. Even if your friend, cousin, or child doesn’t love to wear handmade hats or homemade scarves, there’s always the argument of practicality. If it’s cold, you’ll need a hat. Why not make it an elf hat? If it’s brisk, you’ll need a scarf. Why not make it a Fleece Scarf with Pom Poms?

It may be more than six months until Christmas, but making great handmade Christmas gifts takes time . . . especially if you’re going to try making all eleven wearable crafts in this great AllFreeChristmasCrafts eBook!

What you’ll find in this eBook:

Loom Knitted Santa Hats: Talk about getting in the Christmas spirit. Nothing says “Merry Christmas!” like these great Loom Knitted Santa Hats. They’re festive, sure, but they’re also practical: if you live in a seasonal climate, you need to keep that head warm. Put those knitting skills to the test when you knit this great handmade Christmas gift found in the 11 Christmas Gift Ideas: Handmade Scarves, Hats and More eBook.

Santa Scarf: Now this homemade scarf is just so precious, I had to share. The scarf project has you make Santa’s face and beard on one end, and the entire length of the scarf is his hat! The scarf tapers to a point, then you attach a puff ball for the pom-pom, and you have the finished product. Best of all, you don’t need to sew to make this adorable scarf because this blogger gives directions for a no-sew version as well. Find this incredibly endearing scarf in the 11 Christmas Gift Ideas: Handmade Scarves, Hats and More eBook.

Download a copy of 11 Christmas Gift Ideas: Handmade Scarves, Hats and More; like all of our great eBooks, it’s free!

Today I’m really excited to share our Project of the Day from our friends at Lion Brand Yarn. This lovely cotton sun hat is the perfect accessory for the coming summer months. Keep the sun out of your eyes by wearing this wide-brimmed cap. It’s a great way to keep cool and look fashionable at the same time!

Keeping Cool Sun Hat

You won’t need to hide in the shade this summer if you have this big-brimmed cotton sun hat on!  This easy knit hat pattern is great to start working on now so you’ll be finished by the time it gets really hot out.  Choose your favorite color of yarn and make this lovely sun hat this spring!

Materials:

  • 2 balls 480-098 Nature’s Choice Organic® Cotton Almond
  • Lion Brand Double-Pointed Needles – Size 7
  • Lion Brand Crochet Hook – Size G-6 (4.25 mm)
  • Lion Brand Split Ring Stitch Markers
  • Large-Eye Blunt Needles
  • Circular knitting needle size 7 (4.5 mm)
  • 16 in. (40.5 cm) long needle nose pliers
  • Duct tape
  • 32 (34) in. (81.5 (86.5 cm)) heavy gauge wire (a wire coat hanger works well) or craft wire

Gauge:
12 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd).  BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Stitch Explanation:

kfb (knit into front and then back)

An increase worked as follows:

1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.

2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.

3. Drop the st from your left hand needle – 1 st increased.

yo (yarn over)

An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows:

1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles.

2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle. This creates the new st. You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.

Abbreviations/References:

k = knit
rep = repeat(s)(ing)
rnd(s) = round(s)
st(s) = stitch(es)

Hat Instructions:

Crochet Cast-On:

1. Make a slip knot and insert hook through knot (photo below). Do not tighten the loop onto the hook; you will be inserting your hook into again.

2. Wrap yarn over hook and pull through slip knot.

3. Wrap yarn over hook again and draw through loop just made – you have cast-on 1 st.

4. Insert hook into slip knot loop again. (photo below).

5. Rep Steps 2-4 until a total of 5 (6) sts have been cast-on (photo below).

Divide sts onto 3 needles (photo below). Place marker for beginning of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts. Slip marker at the beginning of every rnd.

Rnd 1 (RS): (Kfb in next st) 5 times, k0 (1) – 10 (11) sts at the end of this rnd. Note: The ‘0’ means that there will be one st remaining to knit at the end of the rnd for the M/L size only.

Rnd 2 and all even-numbered rnds: Knit.

Rnd 3: *K1, yo; rep from * around – 20 (22) sts at the end of this rnd.

Note: When sts have been sufficiently increased, change to circular needle.

Rnd 5: *K2, yo; rep from * around – 30 (33) sts at the end of this rnd.

Rnd 7: *K3, yo; rep from * around – 40 (44) sts at the end of this rnd.

Rnd 9: *K4, yo; rep from * around – 50 (55) sts at the end of this rnd.

Rnd 11: *K5, yo; rep from * around – 60 (66) sts at the end of this rnd.

Rnd 13: *K6, yo; rep from * around – 70 (77) sts at the end of this rnd.

Work in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd) until piece measures about 7 in. (18 cm) from beginning.

Next Rnd: *K7, yo; rep from * around – 80 (88) sts at the end of this rnd.

Next 6 Rnds: Knit.

Next Rnd: K4, yo, *k8, yo; rep from * to last 4 sts, k4 – 90 (99) sts at the end of this rnd.

Next 6 Rnds: Knit.

Next Rnd (Turning Ridge): Purl.

Next 3 Rnds: Knit.

Bind off, leaving a long yarn tail.

Finishing

Using pliers, form wire into a circle, overlapping ends by about 1 in. (2.5 cm) (photo below).

Wrap wire ends with duct tape to secure (photo below).

Lay wire circle onto WS of Hat. Fold Hat edge, along turning ridge, over wire (photo below).

Thread yarn tail into blunt needle and whipstitch edge of Hat, securing wire (photo below).

Weave in ends.

Meet and Make: Kristin Omdahl

September 9, 2011 by FaveCrafts

Today’s Meet and Make designer is Kristin Omdahl, the creater of the design company KRISTIN and website, StyledByKristin.com. Kristin loved to knit and crochet.

Let’s meet Kristin!

10 Fun Facts about Kristin Omdahl:

  1. I’m a single mom whose learning (and loving) to be a tomboy with my adventurous son – camping, fishing, sports and whatever else he comes up with!
  2. I learned to run, trained for, and ran a marathon last year (26.2 miles)
  3. I taught myself to knit and crochet while pregnant and living over seas
  4. I’m teaching myself how to play guitar right now. I want to learn to play “All Summer Long” by Kid Rock, and any Zac Brown Band or Bob Marley songs. I would love to play well enough to not embarrass myself at the beach.
  5. My favorite movies are The Godfather and P.S. I Love You. If the day ever came where I had to choose between Gerard Butler and Jeffrey Dean Morgan…
  6. I love to cook and bake, and enjoy experimenting with my own recipes. I’m especially fond of Mediterranean cooking: Italian, Lebanese, Moroccan & Greek.
  7. I love math more than I should admit. I find reasons to make calculations in my head all the time. And I calculate my gas mileage every time I fill my gas tank.
  8. I was a model as a teenager. I had the same agent at Cindy Crawford in Chicago, went to the same parties as the Victoria Secret models in New York and worked with Brooke Shields once. I met a rock star at a party once, was so afraid of his proposition, I hid in the bathroom for half an hour until he left!
  9. I love to read before going to sleep every night. My favorite books are “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coehlo, “The New Earth” by Eckhart Tolle, “The Witching Hour” by Anne Rice, “The Stand” by Stephen King and my favorite series is “The Outlander” by Diana Gabaldon.
  10. If money were no object, I’d live in a palace on the sea. Otherwise, I hope to one day live in a cottage or hut on the beach.
