Welcome back! I’m so excited to see how many of you have joined the quilt-along. If this is your first week with us, check out the introduction to the beginners quilt-along from last week, and scroll down to the comments to see who else is participating. Make sure to join the Facebook event too so you can connect with other quilters and meet our wonderful host, Christian Tamez.
We are in the process of making an easy and attractive Pinwheel Table Runner together. If you were following along with us during Week 1, you should have done all the shopping for your quilting goodies. If you haven’t purchased your materials already, don’t worry, you can still buy them at discounted prices on CutRateCrafts.com in plenty of time to finish the project with us.
What to Do This Week
1) Learn How to Choose Fabrics for Your Quilt
This week, we will be focusing on the fabrics for this fabulous summer table runner. Still trying to decide which colors and prints are best for this project? Get some help from Christian in his video on choosing fabrics for the Pinwheel Table Runner. He’ll give you recommendations that you can apply to all different color schemes, so you can make a table runner that perfectly fits your decor.
2) Cut the Fabrics for Your Quilt Top
Cutting fabrics for a quilt is easy, but make sure to do it slowly and carefully so that you have the right size pieces. If you’ve never worked with a rotary cutter and self-healing mat before, you can find tutorials for rotary cutting on FaveQuilts.com. Practice with a few pieces of scrap fabric, and once you’ve got the hang of using a rotary cutter, move on to the cutting directions for your pinwheel table runner.
Print out the written cutting instructions for the quilt-along, and then watch Christian’s video on cutting your fabrics so you can see what each fabric piece should look like when you are done cutting. Make sure to save your leftover fabric for scrap quilt projects!
3) Share Your Progress for a Chance to Win
Once you have all your fabrics picked out and cut to size, lay them out on your quilting table and take a picture! Share your fabric choices with other quilters by posting them in the FaveQuilts Flickr group. Leave a comment in the Flickr group if you have questions or concerns or just want to share your excitement with the rest of the group.
Don’t forget to tag your photo with #beginnersquiltalong for a chance to win the quilt-along giveaway. At the end of the quilt-along, we’ll randomly choose one of our participants who has posted a photo on Flickr to win an awesome prize!
