Summer Camp Week

How are you enjoying the Summer Camp Week giveaways and crafts? I know I am! To continue the weekly theme, Link Love this week is full of some of the best kids camping crafts from across the web. I love being outside, and I think interacting with nature is a great way to satisfy a child’s curiosity and connect with them on a more basic level. Plus, it’s so much fun!

Click here to enter today’s Summer Camp Week Giveaway!

Just the thought of the great outdoors makes me want to explore, to experience and create nature crafts and camp crafts for myself and for the kids. I’m not sure why, but there’s something beautifully romantic about wandering the wilderness and living off of the land. Creating crafts from natural, eco-friendly materials seems to satisfy something very primal in people.

If you agree, go camping in the woods, try a hike or nature walk, go canoeing, or just go play in the forest for awhile and gather the basic materials for these fun camp crafts. These crafts for kids and adults are also phenomenal pieces to make at summer camp, where kids especially can experience nature in a way that they normally cannot at home.

I think these Birdie Burgers are a great way to bring nature right to your back door, and Wild Woodland Watercolors make the perfect rustic home accents.

If you’re looking for more easy outdoor activities and nature crafts for kids and adults, this great roundup from across the web is just the thing. Garden Inspired Wall Art is a lovely way to celebrate the outdoors and make something amazing for your home decor. Pitch your tent, take a hike, and gather some materials that inspire you from nature and get to work!

Coloring Outside the Lines: 7 Kids Crafts that Unleash Creativity

July 6, 2012 by AllFreeKidsCrafts

Summer is the perfect time for a child’s imagination to roam free and uninhibited, and kids crafts can help them express themselves. Ever since I witnessed a fellow teacher scolding a child for coloring outside the lines of a coloring page, I have been fiercely opposed to any limitations adults impose upon children’s creative expression. I’ve always felt that creativity with boundaries is hardly creativity at all because it does not allow for innovation and original creation.

I have always disliked the words “just” and “only” because they create boundaries where none should be. When someone says that a child’s creation is “only” a drawing or “just” a piece of paper, it removes the power of the work. In truth, that drawing may be a window into another world or the beginnings of some original invention that could solve a global issue.

I love the uncanny ability kids have that allows “just a box” or “only a sheet” to become a spaceship or a zoo full of dragons, and I believe that this creative exploration is the most crucial thing an adult can provide for a child.

I want to point out a few bloggers whose work on AllFreeKidsCrafts transcends the ordinary and the expected and opens up the potential for true innovation. All of these projects and activities remove creative limitations from children, including those nasty four-letter words “just” and “only” from the world.

Doodle Shoes

Doodle Shoes are a great way to incorporate a kid’s artwork into his or her wardrobe. Kids can make their own style by drawing and coloring patterns on a pair of white sneakers instead of the usual coloring book in this project by Kellie from Eclectic Chica.

Colored Pencil Beaded Jewelry

Kate from Mini-Eco transformed colored pencils into beads, which kids can use to create jewelry, patterns, and other interesting works of art. See her Colored Pencil Beaded Jewelry on AllFreeKidsCrafts, and click through for the tutorial.

Enchanted Acorn Toadstools

Maureen and Shanti from Twig and Toadstool make the most of the supplies in their back yards. I love their little fairy habitats, and these Enchanted Acorn Toadstools demonstrate the way they teach kids to see the magic in everyday items.

Log Totem Pole

I love reading Se7en because each of the kids in this incredibly creative family contributes to the craft project on the site. I’m especially a fan of this stackable, painted Log Totem Pole because each kid decorated a log, which they can then rearrange and put together in different shapes heights.

Boxy Cardboard Firetrucks

A box, as we all know, is never just a box, even once it has been painted like a firetruck… or a train, or a spaceship, or a cave. Providing kids with paint and a box like Brooke from Let Kids Create did is a great way to unleash an active imagination.

Painted Cape Canvas

Amy from Mamascout is excellent at providing her kids with open-ended creative lessons that allow their imaginations to run wild. This stunning Painted Cape Canvas is a beautiful creation her daughter made when Amy offered her a blank cape to use as a canvas.

Marble Run Painting Project

Teacher Tom‘s Marble Run Painting Project allowed preschoolers to pour paint over a marble run and watch the colors blend as an amazing active installation piece.

All of the bloggers whose work is featured on AllFreeKidsCrafts are phenomenal at inventing amazing ways for kids to color outside the lines and create something completely original. Explore more of the projects on the site for some great ideas that will promote inquisitive and innovative though for some incredibly creative creations.

Tell me about a time when a kid’s creativity surprised you!

Summer Reading and Crafting: Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen

June 29, 2012 by AllFreeKidsCrafts

It’s time for kids to begin their summer reading! If your kids don’t like to sit down and read, introduce hands-on experiential learning through Summer Reading and Crafting from AllFreeKidsCrafts.com. The kids crafts and art projects below will help children understand important themes in the story.

See last week’s post about The Giving Tree here.

The Stories:

Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales

Book images courtesy of Amazon.com

Hans Christian Andersen was an author and poet who remains famous today for writing children’s stories like “The Ugly Duckling,” “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” and “Thumbelina.” These tales, written in the 1830s and 1840s, tell stories about fantasy, courtly life, animals and morality. Since their publication, Andersen’s stories have become cultural icons, inspiring countless books, films, and television shows. Most of Andersen’s stories are simple enough for young children to enjoy, while older kids can learn about the customs of the time and study the message behind each tale.

Important Concepts:

Andersen was criticized because some of his stories lacked a specific moral, but the stories often feature familiar situations that children face in their daily lives. Reading a number of them will provide children with a series of messages, advice and lessons for growing up.

 The Ugly Duckling

“The Ugly Duckling” deals with bullying and can help children cope when they are being teased at school. It also indicates that good things may come of a little patience.

The Emperor's New Clothes

“The Emperor’s New Clothes” teaches children to think for themselves and to resist peer pressure.

Thumbelina

“Thumbelina” is an excellent story for children because it features a strong, adventurous little girl in a big world who faces the elements and decides her own fate. The story can teach children how to make their own decisions as they mature and become more independent.

Crafting with the Stories of Hans Christian Andersen:

Walnut Shell Animals
Kids can use walnuts to create some adorable ducklings and swanlings (also known as cygnets) just like the Ugly Duckling. Remind the kids that they are beautiful no matter what the bullies might say and make these Walnut Shell Ducklings.

Medieval Castle and Court
Teach kids about the customs of real princes and princesses by making and playing with Red Ted Art’s Medieval Castle and Court from recycled materials. Even young kids will enjoy playing with these recycled crafts and re-enacting the story of “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”

Woodland Fairy Folk
When reading “Thumbelina,” kids can get outside and find the magic in nature by making Twig and Toadstool’s Woodland Fairy Folk between tales. Kids can even make a little Thumbelina out of a pine cone.

What are your favorite fairy tales? I like the ones by the Grimm brothers as well!

Link Love: Chevron Roundup

June 28, 2012 by FaveCrafts

I didn’t know much about the history or significance of chevron until I started noticing all of the exciting chevron crafts and patterns all over Pinterest and the blogosphere. Before that, I sort of figured that Charlie Brown was the first one to rock the zig-zag.

Hipster Charlie BrownHipster Charlie Brown is judging us all.

As it turns out, the chevron pattern is an ancient design that appears in early rock carvings and pottery throughout the world. Knights and lords from the Medieval Era decorated their banners and shields with chevron as a symbol of their house and title. Today, chevron appears in art, architecture, flags, and military symbols. The simple aesthetic appeal of the design make chevron a classic variation on simple stripe patterns that catches the eye and creates a bold statement.

Lately, the chevron craft craze has been on fire! From chevron socks to crochet chevron table settings to a Glam Chevron Clock, these crafts just don’t stop. Create these crafts with a tasteful zigzag chevron pattern for a look that is sure to add pizzazz to your wardrobe and home décor. Personally, I like chevron because it adds a new spin on the classic stripes that are usually a staple of my wardrobe. Chevron reminds me of open, airy spaces and warm, beachy places with nice cold mojitos. I can’t wait to rock a pair of Chevron Bobby Pin Earrings to go with my Mini Chevron Pouch while I’m out and about this summer.

Once fall rolls around, I fully intend to make these adorable Chevron Pumpkins! They remind me of a Tim Burton film.

I also have a friend who just had a baby, so I’m planning on commissioning one of my quilter friends to make this precious Chevron Baby Quilt.

If you like chevron too, check out these nine amazing chevron crafts from the latest and greatest crafts designers from across the web!

  1. Chevron Pattern Fan Blades from Design Sponge
  2. Chevron Pasta Necklace from Aqui
  3. DIY Chevron IKEA Rug from IKEA Hackers
  4. Chevron Patterned Throw Pillows from Dana Made It
  5. Chevron Patterned Shorts from All the Good Girls Go to Heaven
  6. Bobby Pin Chevron Earrings from Creme de la Craft
  7. Chevron Striped Refrigerator from Pocketful of Pretty
  8. Chevron Pattern Tank from Sewing in No Man’s Land
  9. Chevron Pattern Planter Box from Zelo Photography Blog

What do you think of chevron? Tell us in the comments below! It reminds me of an optical illusion.
