It’s Never Too Late to Organize Your Craft Room

February 8, 2013 by FaveCrafts

We’re about six weeks into the new year and many of us have abandoned our New Year’s resolutions. It’s okay – we’re all friends here! If one of your resolutions was/is to get organized, we’re here to help (whether it’s the beginning of the year or not). It’s easy to get overwhelmed when facing a mess of paper, fabric, scissors, glue and other supplies. We’ve all been there! But the sooner you attack the mess, the sooner you’ll find inspiration for new projects. Plus, you might discover some craft materials that you didn’t even know you had!

How to Organize Your Craft Room: 15 Room Tours and DIY Organization Ideas from Our Favorite Bloggers, is filled with creative inspiration to help you makeover your space. You’ll find that not all of these crafters have ample space for their projects. Whether it’s a basement or a closet, featured designers like Latrice Murphy and Pat Sloan use the space they have to find inspiration for their DIY projects. They also take advantage of clear bins, bookshelves, plastic bags and so much more to store their materials and keep clutter at bay.

Inside the eBook, you’ll find color photos of all the craft rooms as well as information about the space from the bloggers themselves. Many designers offer tips for storage and organization as well as inspiration for the decor and aesthetic.

Tina Johnson (left) and Michael Sellick show that yarn storage doesn’t have to start and end with plastic bins. In fact, they store their yarn vertically on repurposed bookshelves!

Alyice Edrich created her own craft tool caddy out of recycled aluminum cans. Not only did she say money on supplies for organization, but she also crafted with recycled materials!

You might be feeling a slight case of craft room envy at the sight of Mark Montano‘s very own craft cottage. Yes, you read right – he has a circus-themed crafty hideout where he creates the projects found in his books like the Big Ass Book of Bling. Though he describes himself as a “hoarder,” Mark’s creative space is a bastion of creativity and fun. Take a look inside this eBook and see for yourself!

5 Crafty Tips For Organizing Your Creative Space

January 16, 2013 by FaveCrafts

This post comes from our friend Lindsay Conner of CraftFoxes.

If you haven’t noticed, a clean and organized craft room can help get your creative juices flowing like nothing else. When you have a place for everything for fabric, scissors, glitter to glue, you learn how to maximize the space in your craft room. Here are some of our favorite tips for keeping your crafts in order and making the most of your creative space.

Get Inspired with Furniture

You may not have thousands of dollars to spend on new cabinets to organize your craft supplies, but finding a one or two great piece of furniture can make all the difference. Check out big-box stores and vintage furniture dealers for cabinets and dressers that you can repurpose as craft room storage. We love this repurposed shutter storage closet for a shabby chic craft room. An armoire can become a scrapbooker’s dream closet, while inexpensive cube shelves can be stacked to keep your craft supplies hidden under a DIY workstation.

Choose the Perfect Table and Chairs

For a craft room that’s functional as well as pretty, you’ll need a comfortable chair and sturdy worktable. If you’re crafting with kids, find a table that’s a little lower to the ground, or try a high-top and bar stools for supplies you’d like to keep out of little hands. Decoupage a table with old book pages for a custom look. A folding card table and chair makes a great craft table to pull out for additional workspace when a friend comes by to join the party.

Craft Beautiful Containers

When it comes to organizing your craft supplies, a little bit of imagination goes a long way. You can turn old glass pickle jars into cute craft supply jars to hold paper clips, buttons and beads. A teapot makes a very creative yarn organizer, and dowel rods can be used to keep ribbon untangled.

Check out these crafty uses for everyday items to learn more tips for organizing your craft room.

Label It

Once you have your space defined, it’s time to label your craft supplies for easy access. If you have a label maker, colored stickers or some other method for maintaining the mess, it’s helpful to have some method for sorting your stash. We love these chalkboard clothespin labels for clipping to boxes and bins of craft supplies.

Dress Up Your Space

Repaint a vintage mirror and hang it on the wall of your craft room to reflect light in the space and make the room seem bigger. You can finish off your craft room with some pretty details, like easy-to-make curtains with this tutorial from Jennifer Paganelli. Choose light-colored fabric to make sure the room feels light and bright, or darker drapes to keep out the sun.

Link Love: Crafty Organization Ideas

November 22, 2012 by FaveCrafts

Need a little help in the organizational department? I think we all do. Whenever I ask about organization on Facebook, people seem to have the same response – “Organization…what’s that?” Nobody’s perfect, but it helps to know where your supplies are and what materials you have on hand. Luckily, you can easily repurpose materials you already have or recycle your discards and create fashionable, functional organizational pieces. In fact, you can use everything from old neckties to aluminum cans for these projects. It’s time to get organized, crafty people!

First, make a few items for your desk or craft table and get into the habit of placing your supplies in the correct spot. A Denim Art Can or Crayon and Pencil Organizers can add a fun touch to your space and help you keep track of your supplies at the same time. If you frequent craft supply stores (who doesn’t?), the Best Coupon Organizer is sure to help you. The more colorful and stylish the organizer, the more likely you are to make use of it and score great deals.

Think outside the box and make it a priority to get organized. In fact, this is a great new year’s resolution. You can’t have to spend a fortune on supplies, either. Use your crafty know-how and creativity to dream up fun and unexpected organizational ideas – it’s a way to clear your clutter and your mind.

Monthly Craft Question: Show Us Your Craft Room!

January 15, 2012 by FaveCrafts

Welcome to our final wrap up issue of the FaveCrafts Craft Rooms Exposed series! As part of our monthly craft question round up, every day this week we’ve been featuring the inside of a famous craft designer’s craft room. Did you miss a room?  Don’t worry – we’ve compiled a list of featured designers at the bottom of this post.

But before we get to those, we’d like to offer a few more amazing tips and tricks from some of the most talented people in the crafting industry.  Here’s to an organized 2012!

Maureen Wilson, Made By Marzipan

Check out how Maureen organizes her craft room in the video below.  So many great storage ideas!

Benita Skinner, Victoriana Quilt Designs

Benita shared a post with us that includes several projects I know you’ll love.  You will find out how to make a quick sewing machine cover, a needle book from a lovely piece of ribbon, and use old tins to help with additional storage.  Don’t miss her great ideas and tips.

Carol Heppner, Heppner Studios

As a professional craft designer, I do have a lot of supplies from different craft companies.  So, my supplies are kept by company and not by the type of supply.  This way, when a company hires me to create a project for them, I have all the supplies I need in that company’s box.  Whenever possible, everything is stored in clear plastic containers in my studio’s closet.  While my home’s decor is traditional, my studio filled with over-the-top creative inspiration. The chair in the center of the room was a piece I created out of chair with a missing back. Now, it’s been re-purposed into a functional piece of artwork.  My niece loves sitting in this chair when she visits and is also inspired to be creative.

Don’t miss the other amazing craft rooms we toured this week.  There are so many awesome ideas for organization!

  1. Sara Sach from Posh Pooch Designs
  2. Jenny from Craft Test Dummies
  3. Michael Sellick from the Crochet Crowd
  4. Pat Sloan
  5. Kara Jones from MotherHenna
  6. Debra Quartermain

What’s your best organizational secret?  How do you stay organized?
