Day of the Dead Crafts: 5 Ways to Celebrate

November 1, 2013 by AllFreeKnitting Leave a Comment

Dia de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday celebrated October 31st through November 2nd. The Day of the Dead is a special time to remember those who have passed and to celebrate their mortal and immortal lives. The memories of the dead are honored by building altars called ofrendas. These ofrendas are adorned with traditional Dia de Muertos items such as sugar skulls and marigolds. Altars are also decorated with the favorite foods and drinks of the deceased. These personal shrines are both intricate and ornate – personal belongings as well as religious symbols are beautifully arranged to commemorate loved ones who have left this world.

Dia de Muertos is not supposed to be a scary holiday associated with death and sadness. Instead, it is seen as a time of joy and celebration. I remember celebrating the Day of the Dead in my grade school Spanish class by taking a field trip to a local Spanish-speaking neighborhood. Every year, we would visit the National Museum of Mexican Art and see beautiful Mexican folk art, pieces by local artists, and gorgeous hand-made sugar skulls on display. Each skull was an intricate, sugary masterpiece complete with sequins, gold plating, and frosting. We would then walk down the block to the local Mexican bakery where tons of freshly baked sugary treats were waiting to be eaten.

The Day of the Dead has always been one of my favorite holidays – My roommate and I even dressed as a sugar skulls last year for Halloween!

Even though we weren’t smiling, Dia de Muertos is a happy, joyful celebration. It’s a jubilant and fascinating holiday that is celebrated all over the world, so here are a few easy craft projects for you to host a Day of the Dead celebration in your own home!

Send Your Teen To Camp … Maker Camp, That Is!

July 30, 2013 by FaveCrafts Leave a Comment

Summer can be long and boring when you’re not intellectually engaged. However, that doesn’t mean you have to sit in a classroom or stare at a textbook. If your teen is sick of the summer blahs, send them to Maker Camp. And don’t worry, they won’t have to miss a day of their summer job.

Maker Camp is a free virtual camp for crafty teenagers. No need to bring a sleeping bag or pack bug spray – all you need is a computer and an urge to create. This is the forth week of Maker Camp, but it’s far from over. From now until August 16th, teens can participate in crafty field trips, create innovative projects and join a daily Google+ hangout with fellow campers.

Here’s what’s happening this week:

Today- Learn to make and use a silkscreen for personalized designs

Wednesday – Build a device for colossal spin art fun and make a digital flipbook

Thursday- Animate anything with a handmade phenakistoscope

Friday – Hack with Hallmark field trip

Saturday and Sunday – LED throwies for beautiful lighting or party decoration

Don’t forget! Google+ hangouts take place every single day at 1 p.m. Central. All you have to do is head to the Maker Camp site to join.

Take advantage of the last few days of summer and get your teens crafting. There’s still plenty of time to get involved and get to work!

5 Homemade Christmas Crafts

November 16, 2009 by FaveCrafts 1 Comment

As I sit here listening to Christmas music I just can’t wait for the holiday to come around. Christmas is my favorite time of all year, it’s so bright and cheery. I’ve already started on some of my Christmas shopping, but with my family growing I’m going to have to start making gifts. I can be creative when I really want to be. I’d also like to make some of my decorations this year, so I must see what I come up with. For now, I have five really great homemade Christmas crafts I can make.

The crystal dove centerpiece is so beautiful, it really does look like it is hand-crafted. The snowflakes and sparkles bring it all to life and make it look so magical. I also really like the stackable holiday trays. They’re full of color and so playful looking. These make for great trays at your holiday party.
