This project is so simple, you won’t believe that you haven’t tried it yet! Simply grab a skein of Lion Brand Imagine Yarn, unfold the tube and snip a 40-inch piece. Open the tube and slide it over your head – it doesn’t get must quicker than that! This is a great project idea for kids because it doesn’t require sharp objects or complicated stitches. This project serves as a fantastic method of introducing kids to yarn crafts. Make one before the winter chill sets in or create a bunch and give them out as holiday gifts.

Lamp Shade – Change the look of your space with only a few skeins of Lion Brand Imagine Yarn! You don’t have to hit your local home good store for this project, either. Halloween How-To: Boo-tiful Framed Art

October 17, 2013 by FaveCrafts

This tutorial is brought to you by Latrice Murphy for Any Occasion.

Today I’m here to share a quick project, as always! I was at my local craft store when I saw this fabulous Halloween burlap on sale! It was screaming “Buy me,” so I grabbed 1/2 a yard to create these fun and fast frames for Halloween. I made four of them in about 1/2 hour. It makes such a great teacher gift or something simple and fun to give to a friend. I used an 8 X 10 frame, but this would be super fab in a large shadow box with 3-D Halloween objects, too! The possibilities are endless.

Materials:

  • 8 X 10 frame (mine were thrifted for a few cents)
  • Cardstock
  • Halloween burlap or any other kind of Halloween fabric
  • Spray adhesive
  • Hot glue gun
  • Fake webs (mine are from the dollar store)
  • Plastic spiders (also from the dollar store)
  • Sewing machine (optional)

Instructions:

Clean your frame with a damp cloth to remove any dust.

Take a look at your burlap, choose a good piece and cut an 8 X 10 piece from it.

Using your spray adhesive cover the 8 X 10 piece of burlap with adhesive and adhere to your cardstock.

Trim that piece down to fit 8 X 10.

On your sewing machine, give a messy stitch all around the four sides, going over it a couple of times to secure it to the cardstock and to finish the edges.

If using a shadow box frame, adhere your 3-D pieces with hot glue. If using a regular frame, go ahead and place this in your frame as is.

Create a spooky effect by draping the webbing across the frame and hot gluing it in place. Embellish further if you would like. I added plastic spiders to mine.

Save That Fancy Frame For This DIY Decor Project

September 29, 2013 by FaveCrafts

This tutorial is brought to you by Latrice Murphy for Any Occasion.

Chalkboards are all the rave right now and making them has become my new DIY favorite. I found this amazing gold frame at my local thrift shop for just $3! It’s about 24” X 18” and chunky. It just needed a good cleaning and a backing of some kind. Which made me think … CHALKBOARD!

Materials:

  • Vintage or thrifted frame
  • Plywood
  • Hot glue gun
  • Chalkboard spray paint (I use Rustoleum brand)
  • Table saw or other cutting tool
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Staple gun and staples

Instructions:

Give your frame a good cleaning by just wiping it down with warm soapy water.

Have your plywood cut down. (My husband does this for me if he’s home)

Give your plywood two or three coats of chalkboard spray paint and let dry between each coats (at least 15 minutes).

When it is totally dry, turn your frame over and hot glue all around the four sides.

Next, you want to let that hot glue cool and them using your staple gun with at least ½” staples. Staple all around the four sides as well.

Season your chalkboard by rubbing a piece of chalk vertically all over and then horizontally. This will prevent any ghosting or shadowing when you’re ready to write.

Find ideas on Pinterest and other places around the web for chalkboard art and have fun.

I haven’t quite decided on what to write on mine yet. I’ll be sure to share it over on my blog when I do. This chalkboard will be the one that is up most of the year and the wording will change with the seasons. Thanks for stopping by. This was a fun and quick DIY. I hope you go out hunting for a great deal to create this project, too.

Link Love: Homemade Wreaths for Fall

September 18, 2013 by FaveCrafts

Forget September… I’m ready to start dive head first into fall! This is my favorite time of year – the smells, tastes and sounds of fall just can’t be beat. Now that the heat is subsiding (finally) and the leaves are falling, it’s time to say goodbye to summer and officially welcome autumn. Bring on the pumpkins, candy corn and hot cups of cocoa!

You greet your guests by hanging a wreath on your front door, so why not do the same thing to welcome fall? Fall wreaths can incorporate a variety of colorful elements and seasonal fabrics. Use wood, burlap and twine to create a rustic, muted look that’s reminiscent of autumn. Apples are always a major part of fall, be sure to incorporate them into your own design. Create an Apple Pie Wreath using burlap and be sure to add a rolling pin at the bottom. You can also use store-bought plastic leaves to make a Colorful Fall Wreath. This is a quick and easy project that you can make in an afternoon. If you want to add an eco-friendly touch to your decor, create a Metallic Autumn Leaves Wreath or a Brown Bag Halloween Wreath – for both projects, you only need paper grocery bags!

Say hello to fall and hang a pretty homemade wreath on your door. This DIY idea is perfect for even a beginning crafter – many projects only require a few inexpensive supplies and little to no crafting expertise. You can even get the kids to help you welcome the season. It’s time to make an autumn resolution to get creative – start by making one of these delightful decor crafts.

Link Love: Rustic Fall Crafts

September 4, 2013 by FaveCrafts

Fall is here! Okay, it’s still technically summer, but let’s face it – autumn is everywhere! My neighborhood coffeeshop just unveiled its latest offering, maple lattes, and at this point, Pinterest should be renamed Pumpkin-rest. Frankly, I couldn’t be more excited to put away my summer shorts and pull out my chunky sweaters!

When I think of fall crafts, I immediately imagine a cozy country cottage in the woods. I imagine crunchy dry leaves on the ground, a slight chill in the air, and hollow wooden logs lining my path. In other words, autumn is the most “rustic” time of year. From the slightly unfinished fabrics to the muted colors, fall is all about the quiet calm you find in the woods rather than the bright and shiny colors of the beach. A Country Apple Garland, looks great above a mantel or hanging on a wall. The beige muslin fabric is easy to work with and so appropriate for fall. You can also use jute or hemp for Recycled Decoupage Luminary Jars. It gets dark earlier in the fall, so place a tea light inside each jar and use them to light your front porch. Cork is also a great resource if you want to make a country craft, so save up those empty wine bottles! Use the toppers to create Beaded Wine Cork Keychains. This is a quick and thrifty recycle craft that will help you keep track of your keys.

This fall, take a trip to the country without ever leaving home. Use fabric like burlap, muslin and hemp or recycle materials like cork to create rustic projects. Turn your home into a woodsy cottage and don’t forget the requisite pumpkins!

Brighten Up Your Space With This DIY Fabric Photo Holder

August 28, 2013 by FaveCrafts

This project is brought to you by Latrice Murphy from Any Occasion.

I’m gearing up for craft show season and thought it would be great to share with you this fun project I plan on selling this year. It’s inexpensive and you can make it to match your home just by choosing the right fabric.

This is what your finished board will look like. Mine fits two 5″ X 7″ photos in either landscape or portrait direction. I love that you can mix it up.

Materials you’ll need:

  • Board cut to whatever size you would like
  • Fabric of your choice
  • Staple Gun
  • Felt
  • Glue gun
  • Large magnetic clips

Directions:

Cut your board to size.

Lay your board down on your fabric and trim it leaving about 2 inches on all four sides.

Trim all four corners at a 45 degree angle. This will make the corners nice and tight.

Start folding the fabric back stapling along the way. Start on one side, then the opposite and pull it snug.

fabric-board2

Using your hot glue gun measure and adhere clips in the spots.

Lastly, measure and cut felt down to cover the back. This gives it a nice finished look.

I think I’ll make these as gifts for Christmas. I just have to find out everyone’s interior home colors. My daughter has already asked for one for her room. Have fun creating one of your own!

DIY Lamp Décor: Reusing those Remnants

August 14, 2013 by FaveCrafts

This post is brought to you by Chris Long.

Die-hard fans of DIY home decor know two things: It is extremely satisfying creating masterpieces using your own two hands and you will most certainly have leftover materials when you are finished. Fortunately, there is one more way to keep that home furniture elation alive: Make your own complementary accent pieces using your remnants! Whether you have leftover paint (or samples that didn’t quite make the cut) or surplus scraps of trim, cording or ribbon from pillows or window treatments, the possibilities of what you can make with them are endless. Projects like the Scrap Ribbon Lamp Shade  allow you to use up ribbon scraps and save money on supplies.  Give your end tables, coffee tables or computer desks the perfect look with these two home furniture finishing touches for lamps. Use leftover paint samples and pieces of trim or cording for these projects.

Project #1: Paint Samples and Stencils

When you are selecting your wall color, you can go through quite a few paint samples – some are single steps away from each other on the same swatch (the same color but one shade darker or lighter) and some are completely different (you couldn’t decide between dark gray or light blue for the walls but you are using both colors in the room).

No matter which color conundrum applies to you, you can reuse that paint by updating a table lamp like the one above.

  • Make sure the lamp is clean and dry – no dust, otherwise, the paint won’t adhere.
  • Apply a coat of paint to the lamp base using the complementary color.
  • Once that has thoroughly dried, use your main wall color to paint a decorative emblem or accent band using a craft paint brush and stencil that matches your room’s patterns.

*Tip: By using your wall color as the accent piece on the lamp, you can be sure the lamp stands out from the wall as a focal point rather than fading into the background.

Project #2: Stylish Shades

If you want to give your living room furniture a boost and find a home for those extra lengths of trim, cording or ribbon that you didn’t use, trim out a lamp shade!

  • Using the remnant of cord itself (as opposed to a fabric measuring tape), measure around the top and bottom of the shade and mark where to make the cuts so the ends meet as closely as possible (no overlap).
  • Cut your trim and apply a liquid seam sealant to the edges to prevent fraying.
  • Using a hot glue gun, apply a thin bead of glue to the shade. Wrap the cord around the shade as you glue and firmly press until the glue sets up.

*Tip: You can use binder clips as clamps, starting at one end as you glue to make sure the cord adheres to the shade.

What bright ideas do you have for updating lamps and shades with your leftover décor materials?
