Unexpected Decor Ideas for Eco-Friendly Crafters

July 10, 2013 by FaveCrafts

This article is brought to you by Dan Whiteside. Dan blogs about DIY and gardening topics at DIY Newbie, where he discusses a variety of home improvement projects.

If want to spruce up your home, there are loads of ways to do it. You could of course hit the shops, but that might take its toll on your wallet. Why not consider upcycling some old items and give them a whole new purpose? This is easy to achieve by using things around your home and beyond that are no longer in use. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking…

Unusual bookends

Whether you’re an avid reader or more of a fan of DVDs, you can be a little bit creative with the way you display them. Books look great on shelves but to stop them tumbling over you’ll probably need a bookend. Rather than purchasing one, why not use an old telephone handset, or if you’ve old toys  lying around, cut them in half and stick either side of the shelf for a quirky prop.

Make bowls from old vinyl

At one time, a vinyl collection would have been the pride and joy of many people. However, due to advances in technology, some records are likely to gather dust. Even if you do still use your record player there’s likely to be a couple of records you can with which you can bear to part. Use them to create some eye catching bowls – all you need is a baking tray, a metal colander and an oven. Turn the colander upside down on the tray, put the record on top and place inside at around 200 degrees. Keep an eye on it and when it begins to melt get to work on bending and shaping it as you desire (while being careful not to burn your fingers) and you’ll soon have some original items to show off! If you’re looking for another fun and thrifty craft to help you decorate your space, try making your own Colorful Upcycled Button Bowl. This simple project will help you add a  fun, colorful touch to your space.

Bar stool desk

If you’ve recently invested in some new furniture and have old bar stools left around, or know a venue that does, don’t let them go to waste. Add wood to the top of two of two chairs to create an unusual yet perfectly functional desk. It could save you a fortune and help the environment, too.

Wine barrel table

Old wooden wine barrels might not be something you have lying around the house but that’s not to say you won’t be able to pick them up.  The oak will look great in your home and serve as a functional place to rest your glass. There are a number of ways you can add finishing touches, such as adding an additional layer to the top of the barrel and even cutting a door in to it for a little storage space. It’s even been shown that it’s possible to turn them into an arcade machine!

Re-use an old jar as a glass

Old jars can serve multiple purposes, from storing small items such as nails and screws to serving as a unique glass. Mason jars are inexpensive and can be bought in bulk. Use them to create storage items like Colorful Bead Jars – you can stay organized and enjoy the look of your beads at the same time. If you’re hosting a cocktail party then why not personalize each jar for your guests and serve up your drinks in them with a straw. Pretty Pink Mason Jar Cups are a fantastic baby shower or wedding shower craft idea and can be given as favors at the end of the day. Best of all, you don’t have to spend a fortune on them – simply use recycled glass jars, decorative paper and embellishments you have on hand.

What have you made with recycled items?

Design Your Own Craft Room – It’s Easier Than You Think

June 12, 2013 by FaveCrafts

This post is brought to you by Aimee Claire.

Scrapbooking and paper crafting require a crafting environment that combines organization and plenty of workspace.  The amount and variety of materials and supplies needed for scrapbooking can quickly become overwhelming if the work environment is not taken in hand right from the beginning.  The best way to do this is to have a dedicated paper craft room, complete with comfortable and functional furniture, a spacious work area, good quality lighting and plenty of shelving and storage for all those valuable supplies and equipment.

If you’re not sure where to start or need a little inspiration from  top craft bloggers, check out our eBook, How to Organize Your Craft Room: 15 Room Tours and DIY Organization Ideas from Your Favorite Bloggers. Download your copy today – it’s free!

Decorating and Furnishing Your Paper Craft Room

When decorating a paper craft room, creating the maximum inspiration potential is the key.  Employ calmer, more neutral background colors for the walls and floor, and tap into brighter, bolder colors for the accents.  Hang inspirational pictures and clippings on the walls. You can create your own wall hangings and save money on home decor – simply use materials you have to create projects like Garden Inspired Wall Art.

Furnishing a paper craft room means choosing functional pieces with an eye towards design and comfort.  Shelving is, of course, a necessity, whether that shelving is open, hidden behind cabinet doors, or a combination of open and closed space.  Open shelving is especially accessible and attractive, particularly when bins and baskets are used for supply storage.  Closed storage units are a good choice for paper craft rooms that pull double duty as guest rooms or if the crafting area is in a community room, such as a dining room. A Floral Mosaic Shelf is a pretty and practical option you can work on at home.

Another furniture piece that is a necessity for a paper craft room is a sturdy and spacious work surface.  Whether that surface is an installed counter or some extended dining tables positioned at a 90-degree angle, the goal is to have plenty of workspace.

Lighting is also very important.  A variety of lighting sources should be used, including overhead lighting, targeted lighting aimed at the work space, and work lamps that may be positioned and used as needed, then put away.

Tips for Organizing Your Craft Room

After designing the perfect paper craft room, keeping supplies and tools organized and easy to find becomes the new goal.  Storage options may seem as if they would be limited, but actually there is a lot of room for individuality when choosing shelving and other storage pieces.

Open shelving with colorful fabric bins as the main storage system is one option.  Various sizes and styles of baskets may also be used to hold supplies.  Plastic storage units with multiple drawers are good for storing bits and pieces used when scrapbooking, as well as paper punches, scissors and other tools. Make storage and organization more fun by crafting your own boxes and jars. Fancy and Fabulous Storage Containers don’t take long to make but can add so much to a drab space.

Small pieces of paper, tiny buttons and other accouterments may be perfectly stored in the tiny jars and drawers of an old spice cabinet.

Modular storage systems, which feature drawers, shelves and bins in combination, are good flexible choices for scrapbooking rooms where the storage needs of the crafter constantly change.  Modular units offer the option of altering the formation of storage options, as well as adding on to the unit to expand storage as needed.  Other storage suggestions include: using vertical magazine boxes for storing papers; using canning or jelly jars to store ribbons and buttons, adding a decorative touch to the room as they hold important supplies; and using a pegboard for storage and display purposes.

Need a little help in the organization department? Check out our 5 Craft Room Storage Tips You Can Use – each idea is more practical than the next.

DIY Decor Idea: Create Custom Bathroom Cabinets

May 29, 2013 by FaveCrafts

This post is brought to you by Jay Harris, a Home Depot sales associate in the Chicago area.

When you’re ready to redo your bedroom set, rather than tossing out your previously-enjoyed furniture pieces, give them new purpose in life as bathroom storage pieces!

Storage can come in many shapes and sized – from small Etched Bathroom Jars to Mixed Media Spa Jars, you can store little items in a variety of creative ways. But what about more substantial storage solutions for larger items?

Here is a great DIY bathroom furniture project that will allow you to express your crafty side while keeping an eye on your bottom line at the same time.

Custom Cabinetry

A large, upright cabinet, bureau or dresser can double as a fantastic linen closet or bathroom cabinet! If you’re looking for a little crafty inspiration to get your creative juices flowing, be sure to check out the Rub a Dub Bath Shelf.

Before you undertake this project, make sure the dimensions of the furniture piece match up with the space in your bathroom. Don’t forget to measure the doorway and the layout of your bathroom (around the tub, past the shower, etc.) to ensure you can actually get the piece to its new home.

When you’re ready to refinish your wood furniture, you’ll need:

  • A drop cloth, old sheet or tarp to paint on
  • Mask (optional – for keeping out noxious paint fumes)
  • Paint brushes (different sizes depending on your design)
  • Several clean rags or cloths to wipe away dust and excess paint
  • Gloves
  • Paint-and-Primer combo* for the cabinet itself
  • Decorative paint (optional – and in however many colors you choose for your design)

*NOTE: Since many older pieces of furniture may have been originally treated with lead-based paint, sanding is not recommended. Instead, using a paint-and-primer in one product eliminates the need for sanding altogether!

In a well-ventilated room, when you have enough time to complete the project from start to finish:

  1. Remove any drawers and place them to the side – make sure to mark which one goes where in the cabinet as many older pieces of furniture have “favorite” slots where only certain drawers will fit!
  2. Wipe away any loose dust from the cabinet – thoroughly wipe off each piece (sides of the cabinet, doors and drawers) to ensure no dust particles remain when you’re ready to paint.
  3. Apply the paint in smooth, even coats. Wash your brushes thoroughly when you are finished so you can reuse them for the next project.
  4. Allow each piece to dry completely before reassembling the cabinet – at least overnight and with fans, if possible.
  5. Move your newly-customized cabinet into its new home and enjoy the fruits of your labor!
  6. Don’t forget to take pics and share your efforts with the rest of us!

Custom Updating Tip:

Another way to update and customize your bathroom furniture is to replace the cabinet hardware or handles! Take the hardware knobs or pulls you are replacing to the store with you to ensure you purchase similarly-sized fixtures with the same distance between screws that you can be certain will fit the piece.

You can also create handmade items to decorate your space. “Bath” Wall Art can quickly change the look of your home and you don’t have to spend a fortune to make one.

What kinds of repurposed furniture have you seen revitalized and upcycled in unique and interesting ways? Have you tried any similar renovation projects?
