Foolish Food: How to Trick Them With Treats

March 30, 2012 by FaveCrafts 1 Comment

As the target of one too many April Fool’s pranks, I have to say I’m not a huge fan of the “holiday.”  However, I do think a little bit of harmless fun is okay, and I think I’ve discovered one of the best ways to trick your friends and family without hurting anyone.  What’s that, you ask?  Fool them with food!

I’ve been seeing tons of tutorials for crafts that look like food lately, and to take that trend one step further, it seems a lot of people have been making food that looks like other food.  By that I mean cake that looks like pizza, Tootsie Rolls that look like hamburgers, mashed potatoes that look like ice cream, rice krispie treats that look like Hershey Kisses, cupcakes that look like corn on the cob, and a bunch of treats where you think you’re biting into one thing but suddenly taste something completely different.  Fun, huh?

Here are some easy-to-make foods “in disguise” that will be so much fun to whip up for April Fool’s Day:

Think this fried egg looks yummy?  Think again!  This seemingly-delicious breakfast item is actually more of a dessert.  It’s made from vanilla yogurt and canned peaches!  Clever, no?

It’s hard to stop your mouth from watering when you see an entire Kentucky Fried Chicken meal laid out before you. But what if that meal wasn’t really the crispy chicken, buttery corn and baked beans you were expecting?  The “faux meal” pictured is actually created from a bunch of different sweets, from Twinkies and jelly beans to rice krispie treats and pretzel sticks!  You’d never guess it just by looking, which is what makes this a recipe for success when it comes to an April Fool’s Day food fake out!

This is what you would call the opposite of a sweet surprise. These frosted “cupcakes” may look like dessert perfection, but really they’re filled with a meat loaf center and a mashed potato frosting on top. Imagine your friend’s reaction when they find out the cupcake you gave them is more savory than sweet!

These Faux French Fries are the perfect trick for the fast food lover in your life.  Just set this basket of fries in front of your unsuspecting “victim” and watch their face as they discover their favorite finger food snack is actually frozen pound cake!

This last one isn’t even made of food, but it sure looks like it!  If you’re pretty sure your intended target won’t fall for your prank, this is a good one to try (so they don’t get harmed!).  These Cupcake Bath Bombs may look delicious, but they’re actually made out of soap!  Leave one of these tasty-looking treats out on your kitchen counter and see if your target takes the bait.  It’s pretty hard to resist this tempting cupcake, so he or she may just end up with a mouth full of soap!

Now even though these food pranks are all in good fun, you might want to have a plan of action in case the person you fooled is looking to get you back.  After all, the last thing you’d want is to end up with a mouthful of meatloaf cupcake!

Who are YOU planning to prank this April Fool’s Day?  What are you planning to do?

Meet and Make: Angie Holden

March 23, 2012 by FaveCrafts 6 Comments

This week’s Meet and Make designer is Angie Holden. Angie blogs about everything from home decor projects to vintage finds over at The Country Chic Cottage. All of her DIY projects have a bit of farmhouse flair, hence the name of her blog. Angie loves all different types of craft mediums, but one of her top picks is paper. Something that may surprise you about Angie is that she has a degree in engineering!  Curious to find out more?  Read her 10 fun facts below and get to know Angie a bit better!

10 Fun Facts About Angie:

1. I live on a farm in rural Tennessee.

2. I have a degree in engineering.

3. My husband and I were high school sweethearts that met on a blind date.

4. I have an addiction to Reese’s peanut butter eggs (spring is not a good time for me to diet).

5. I drive a VW Beetle.

6. I love reality television.

7. Our family loves spending time on our boat in the summer.

8. I don’t own any high heels.

9. We live in our dream home and hope to never leave.

10. I clean like a mad woman when I know people are coming to my house.

Here’s the project that Angie’s sharing with us for National Craft Month.  This week is all about yarn crafts, but that doesn’t mean it has to be all about knitting and crochet.  Angie’s Fuzzy Hello Spring Wreath is covered in pretty pastel yarn.  Isn’t it cute?!  Find the wreath making instructions below:

Fuzzy Hello Spring Wreath

Materials:

  • Wreath form
  • One skein of yarn in spring colors (Angie used the Cha Cha yarn from Patons)
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Foam Letters
  • Buttons
  • Hot glue
  • Ribbon
  • Scalloped Edge Scissors
  • Plaid paint (Folk Art paints in acrylic and glitter)

Instructions:

1. Take your yarn and wrap around your wreath form. The variegated yarn will make stripes as you wrap. Once your form is covered, glue the end of the yarn down in the back.

2. Create the “Hello” banner. For the “Hello” banner, I used a variety of pre-cut tag shapes. You can cut these yourself into any shape you wish or use pre-cut ones like I did. These do not have to all be the same color. You are going to paint right on the paper. One coat of acrylic paint and one coat of glitter paint on each tag. Make sure the paint colors you use match.

3. Add on foam letters to spell “Hello” after the paint dries. Run a strand of ribbon through the holes at the top and tie on your wreath. If the tags do not stay positioned like you want, add a drop of hot glue to hold each in place.

4. Now let’s make some paper flowers for our wreath. Take a full size sheet of scrapbook paper (mine was 12 inch by 12 inch paper) and paint it any color you choose. Again use acrylic for the first coat and glitter for the second coat. Allow to dry. Cut into approximately 1 1/2 inch wide strips with your scalloped edge scissors. Fold each strip “accordion” style.

5. Place two accordion folded strips together to make a circle. Hot glue both ends together.

6. Turn over to the back and make your accordion circle into a flat flower like shape. Add hot glue to the center. Hold until set.

7. Turn over to the front and add hot glue in the center, holding until set. You can really add a ton of glue to the back as it will not be seen. Be a little more careful in the front.

8. Add these to your wreath with some more hot glue. But wait, they need a little something to cover up that ugly middle.

9. Cover the middles. I found these plain wood buttons at the Dollar Tree and glammed them up with some paint. Again, one coat of acrylic paint and one coat of glitter paint will go on each one.

10. Place the buttons in the center of your flower shapes with hot glue. Don’t have plain wood buttons? You could paint regular buttons or just use them as-is.

11. Add a ribbon to the back of the wreath and hang this on your door.

It’s Your Lucky Day! Find 1000s of Crafts Right Now

February 20, 2012 by AllFreeHolidayCrafts Leave a Comment

As the title of this blog post promised, today is your lucky day!  For two reasons.  1) St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner and we’ve got a bunch of fun and festive craft ideas to share with you.  And 2) We’re going to introduce you to one of the most addictive, inspiring websites of all time.  And you’re going to love it!

So, let’s actually start with number 2.  Have you all heard of this thing called Pinterest?  I know, it’s a funny name and the concept is sort of confusing.  I mean, who actually knows what an “online pinboard” really is?  Well, we’ve broken it down for you in our handy guide to Pinterest.  In short, Pinterest is a website where you can go to find just about anything, from recipes to craft tutorials to funny cartoons to inspirational quotes.  And so much more!  So. Much. More.

You can search for something of particular interest to you, say St. Patrick’s Day crafts, for example.  Pinterest will bring up all of the green-leprechaun-rainbow-shamrock projects you could ever imagine.  And then you can spend hours (literally) looking through all of the fun ideas.

Just click on the image below and you can start browsing now!

Or you can choose to browse more general categories that you enjoy, like DIY & Crafts, Home Decor, or Food & Drink.  It’s all up to you!  And you can create your own account where you can organize your favorite things and save projects and recipes to categorized “boards.”  This is especially handy when you find something you want to try out, but don’t have time for right then and there. You can “pin” the tutorial or recipe and come back to it later!

So, those are the basics of Pinterest.  You with me so far?  Yes?  Good!

Back to #1, where we promised to share some fun St. Patrick’s Day crafts with you.  Whether you’re Irish or just like pretending to be for one day each year, St. Patrick’s Day is one of the most fun holidays to craft for.  I mean, what could be better than leprechaun and rainbow crafts?!  And if Pinterest is any indication, a whole lot of you guys like making decorations for this holiday.  Some of our most popular “pinned” projects from AllFreeHolidayCrafts are St. Patrick’s Day tutorials!  Below we’ve highlighted some of the best-of-the-best, but you can also check out our St. Patrick’s Day board on Pinterest for tons more inspiration!

Most Popular St. Patrick’s Day Crafts:

Four Leaf Clover Bouquet

Happy-Go-Lucky Wreath

Enviable St. Patrick’s Day Card

Leprechaun Hat Treats

And just to make your day even luckier, here are some of our other most popular projects from Pinterest.  These are the ideas that people from all over the country and world liked enough to “pin” and share with their friends.  We hope you like them too!

Other Popular Crafts:

Carrot Boxes for Easter

Coffee Filter Roses

Cupcake Liner Flower Suckers

Tell me:  Are you addicted to Pinterest?  Or do you think you will be after reading this?
