Holly Jolly July: 8 Decorations to Start Quilting for Christmas

July 19, 2013 by FaveQuilts

I absolutely love the summertime fun of taking day trips to the beach, tending to healthy flowers in the garden,  and throwing outdoor BBQ parties. Yet, I also love Christmas cookies, bright red poinsettias, and making handmade quilted gifts for loved ones. Fortunately, I don’t have to pick between my favorite season and holiday — I can just combine them by making wonderfully festive Christmas in July quilt projects!

Although the holidays aren’t for another 6 months, all of the editors FaveQuilts are already getting ready for this year’s Christmas quilting projects. Check out our list of our most loved decorative Christmas quilts that you need to get started on today.

Christmas Quilt Kitchen Decor

Christmas-Tree-Hot-Pad--1--

Creating your own Christmas-themed quilts for the kitchen is not only an easy way to save money, but also an easy way to add a burst of cheerful festivity to your home! For example, this pattern idea for a Christmas Tree Hot Pad  will come in handy when it’s time to take a Christmas ham or Christmas casserole out of the oven. If you have a few green and red layer cake fabrics handy, you can quickly piece together the multi-hued Christmas Joy Centerpiece to add a cute quilted Christmas decoration to any kitchen counter or dining room table. Personally, I like making minimalistic patterns for my quilted home decor; which is why I really love this extremely simple quilt pattern for this gorgeous Christmas Randot Table Runner.

Christmas Tree Quilt Decorations

Christmas-Tree-Skirt-in-JulyWhile palm trees are currently thriving in this July heat,  nothing gives you that Christmastime cheer like imagining a gorgeous, decked-out Christmas tree. Your family’s evergreen will really stand out this year if you start making your quilted Christmas decorations, like the Christmas in July Tree Skirt, before Santa comes to town! If you’re tired of overly tinseled trees, you’ll enjoy the simple, but stunningly classic pattern for the Starry Christmas Ball Ornament. Don’t forget to make personalized Christmas quilt patterns for your kids or grandkids with the Scrappy Christmas Tree Stocking.

Wall Hanging Quilts for Christmas

Christmas-Tree-Farm-Wall-HangingDon’t let the holidays sneak up on you — prepare yourself for the most wonderful time of the year by making an advent calendar quilt or a wallhanging Christmas quilt. Some of FaveQuilts‘ all-time favorite patterns include the Christmas Traditions Advent Calendar and the Merry Christmas Wallhanging. We also are pleased to bring you this NEW Christmas quilt pattern called the Christmas Tree Farm Wall Hanging, which features a whole forest of adorable and soft quilted evergreen pictures.

The Secret to Easy Holiday Crafting: Watch and Learn!

November 1, 2011 by AllFreeHolidayCrafts

For me, crafting is sort of like shopping.  The idea of going to the mall and taking my clothes on and off and trying to figure out what looks good and what doesn’t is just so… exhausting.  But I also love clothes and want to keep my closet stocked with cute shirts and nice jeans.  So shopping is something that I look forward to and dread at the same time.  That’s why I always go shopping with a friend.  Not only is it great to have company and someone to commiserate with when pair after pair of jeans just won’t fit, it’s also a great motivation to actually GO shopping.  My friend Alyssa calls me and says “we’re going shopping” and, as much as I don’t want to, I go.  And guess what?  I end up having a good time.

I’m the same way with crafting.  It’s something I want to do and I always love the finished product, but the actual process, especially the whole “getting started” thing is a little bit intimidating for me.  I never quite know if I have the right materials, if I’m doing the steps right, if my project is looking how it’s supposed to at each stage of the process and a whole host of other concerns.

That’s why it was such a huge moment for me when I first discovered craft tutorials on YouTube.  I guess I had never thought about it before, but once I found one, I was hooked.  Click after click after click, I just kept finding more awesome videos that actually SHOWED you how to make things.  And the people giving the instructions were so nice and friendly.  It was sort of like I had a whole new bunch of crafting buddies, except I had never met any of them before!  Since I live by myself and usually am a solitary crafter, it was really nice to have some company while I made my projects!

With the holidays just around the corner, you’re probably planning a bunch of DIY projects.  If you’re like me and would rather follow along with someone as they make something instead of just reading a list of steps, you’ll appreciate the collection of videos on the AllFreeHolidayCrafts YouTube channel.  There are tons of great ideas for the upcoming holiday season, including a Christmas Card Gift Set and instructions to make Easy Poinsettia Flowers to decorate for Christmas.  There are also some fun seasonal projects on the channel.  My favorites are the Fall Blocks Tutorial and the Winter Wreath Tutorial.

Check out a couple of the videos below and then be sure to subscribe to the channel (it’s the little yellow “Subscribe” button on the left of the screen).  That way you’ll know whenever a new craft video is posted!

Happy Crafting!

Start Planning your Christmas Decorations Now With a New eBook from AllFreeChristmasCrafts

October 24, 2011 by AllFreeChristmasCrafts

It’s never too early to start planning for the Christmas season.  Case in point, I’ve had a jar of Christmas ornaments sitting on my desk since last December. A little taste of the holiday season (no matter the temperature outside) really create a sense of fun and excitement. Why not start crafting your Christmas decorations today? That way, when Thanksgiving is over, you can immediately switch over your decor and show off your festive side!

To get you started, we’ve collected 8 of our favorite homemade Christmas decorations into a free eBook just for you. In 8 Unique Christmas Decorations to Make, you’ll find everything from kid-friendly ornaments to a tabletop tree made from repurposed materials. These projects are perfect for crafters at all skill levels. For instance, kids can make a Handy Reindeer on their own and hang it anywhere. On the other hand (no pun intended), a project like the Split Tree requires the use of a saw – maybe not the most kid-friendly project and quite possibly more suited for an crafter with woodworking experience.

What makes this eBook special is that it’s so varied – you’ll never get bored or run out of project ideas. I love that one of the ornaments used wrapping paper scraps (we all have plenty of those sitting around during the holiday season). One of the projects is a no-sew advent calendar – a traditional yet easy-to-make project that’s perfect for the season. Now is the time to get working on your crafting projects – don’t wait until it’s too late!
