Howto Create Unique Christmas Ornaments On A Budget

October 1, 2011 by TheCrochetCrowd 1 Comment

Feather Boas and Christmas Balls For Christmas Decor
Using Feather Boas and Christmas Balls, Combine the Two Together to create unique Christmas Tree Ornaments.

Using a feather boa and some plastic Christmas balls that have been purchased from a dollar store. Cut off a snip of feather boa. Using a hot glue gun, glue the feathers to the top of the balls.

This simple idea will create fun and whimsicle Christmas decorations. We had a pick and purple theme the year we did this. This year we are thinking Black and White for our theme.

Due to the feathers being bulky and airy looking, they really do cover a tree beautifully without having to do too many.

WATCH THIS FREE TUTORIAL NOW

If you really want bright and insist on feathers. This Pink Feather Wreath is a must!

Favecraft’s Scotch Super Glue and Adhesive Dots Giveaway

September 9, 2011 by FaveCrafts Leave a Comment

Extraordinarily trustworthy historians tell us that glue was originally developed as a way of holding wigs firmly to heads, hats firmly to wigs, and on many occasions, birds firmly onto hats.  While this was a great aid to the upperclass gentlemen looking to avoid unwanted embarrassment, it was in the crafting field that glue truly found its nitche, so much so that we recently featured it on our list of supplies that every crafter must own!  So trick out your crafting arsenal with the latest products from Scotch: super-glue with a super-precise applicator, and permanent adhesive dots.

We’re giving away one set of prizes to one lucky reader!  Think its you?  Then click here for your chance to enter!  The contest ends on 9/23, so act now!

3 Supplies That Every Crafter Needs

August 26, 2011 by FaveCrafts Leave a Comment

Preparation is the key to success, and the key to preparation is having the right tools.  For instance, if you want to make an omlette, you need some eggs and a willingness to break them, if you want to be Batman then you need a utility belt and a butler, and if you want to make a Shakespearean farce then you need identical twins, cross-dressing, and puns.  However, most of you out in our corner of the blogosphere are more interested in crafting, so what are the essential tools every craft-fan needs in their arsenal?  We put the question to you on facebook, and here are a few of the best answers we received!

When we started looking at all the comments, a pattern started to emerge very quickly

The humble cutting tool, mainstay of the kitchen and the medieval battlefield, was almost invariably the first or second thing on the minds of our readers when it came to the craft table.  With scissors occupying such a high position in the crafting hierarchy of needs, you’ll want to be sure to own the best pair for your particular fancy.  Most fabric projects call for a pair of scissors like these.  Lower qualities scissors derive their cutting power from the shearing action between the two blades rather than sharpness, but you’ll want sharp and heavy scissors that can go through even delicate fabrics without any tearing.  Embroidery scissors are  narrow and sharp-pointed, perfect for snipping and trimming.  For paper crafts, a pair of good general purpose scissors like these will get the job done, but you can get more selective based on the sort of work you’re doing.

Personally, I’m not willing to do anything more stressful than getting up from my chair without a good cup of coffee, but it’s clear from the feedback we received that adhesives are the #2 most mentioned crafting item.  A lot of you clearly appreciate the convenience and speed that comes from a hot glue gun, not to mention the opportunity to make “Zap! Zap!” noises and pretend you’re in a 1970’s sci-fi movie.  Beyond that, there’s a whole plethora of glues out there for different projects, so check labels to see what’s best for the project at hand.
Some general glue rules of thumb:

  • Don’t glue your thumb to anything
  • Look for a non-toxic glue when possible, especially when planning crafts for kids.
  • Always be careful when using super-powerful adhesives.  Generally these should only be used in well-ventilated areas, and be sure to lay down newspaper, or some other covering to protect surfaces from being damaged by errant droplets.

It was fearless crafter Stacy Palmer who best summed up the thought process that was going on in so many of our reader’s minds

Of course, with so many different crafts in the world, exactly what kind of scrap people prefer to play with was very different.  In our extremely informal poll the most popular choices were paper (including cardstock) and fabric.

Beyond that, many of our readers wanted to stress the importance of intangibles

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

Do you agree with our respondents?  What items would you add or subtract?

FaveCrafts 365 Hot Tip! Hot! Hot! Hot!

April 2, 2011 by Maria Leave a Comment

Recently while crafting with my mother-in-law Elizabeth I was reminded that safety is always first when it comes to crafting! We do certain skills and use some tools so much that we can over time take for granted that care should be used.

Hot. Glue. Gun! Need I say more? Any crafter who has crafted for any length of time has a hot glue gun battle scar that he or she probably wishes they’d never experienced! It’s like lava! It’s like the fires of a forest gone wild! It hurts! And it can leave a scar!

I’m a big fan of warm glue and glue guns, and some glue guns come with dual temperature switches. Keep in mind you shouldn’t put hot glue in a warm glue gun.  I have a hot tip for all those who use hot glue guns… Just watch the video!

Need a glue gun or glue sticks? Check out CutRateCrafts.com for the best prices! And the site now has a blog!!! Click here to read!

If you are like me you probably have more than one glue in your crafting toolbox. It would be wonderful if one glue did it all, but that glue hasn’t been invented yet.  The key to choosing a glue is to know what kind of surface you are trying to bond. There are two basic surfaces. Do you know what they are? You will after watching this FaveCrafts 365!

You can get the best variety and price on glues on CutRateCrafts.com. Check it out! It’s my favorite online craft store.

How to: Craft with Glitter

August 18, 2010 by FaveCrafts 1 Comment

Glitter is one of the most versatile materials to craft with. You can use glitter on fabric, glass, plastic, paper, or wood. You can wear glitter in your hair, on your nails, in your makeup, or on your clothing and accessories. You can knit or crochet with glitter yarn, you can use glitter with rubber stamping in scrapbooking and cardmaking, and you can add a little extra glitz to everything in your home with glitter. Everyone likes a little sparkle now and then, from children to teens to grandparents. Use this guide to get you started with glitter!

Glitter 1Glitter 2Glitter 4Glitter 4

Types of glitter

Low-Grade Chunky Glitter: This is the kind of glitter you used in school to make hand-print Thanksgiving decorations and other art projects. You may still have some stuck to your kitchen table from that craft you glittered 20 years ago.

Spray-On Glitter: Use this type of glitter on fabric or in projects such as wreath-making that need a uniform coating of sparkle. Spray-on glitter comes in an aerosol can, like spray paint.

Glitter Glue: Squeeze this gel onto paper projects, clothing you’re embellishing, or other crafts that need a three dimensional glitter finish.

Fine Powder Glitter: Use this glitter to emboss with rubber stamping projects or in your scrapbooks.

Read this comprehensive list for more information.

Ways to Craft with Glitter

Crochet or Knit with Glitter Yarn: Glitter yarn isn’t exactly glitter in the traditional sense; rather, it’s yarn that is mixed with strands of metallic thread for a glittery look. Check out these gorgeous glittery yarn projects on FaveCrafts:

Tips and Tricks for Working with Glitter:

  • Read how to incorporate glitter into your crafts.
  • Use a noodger to fix mistakes.
  • Work with loose glitter over a piece of newspaper to catch and reuse the extra bits that fall.
  • If you don’t have glitter glue, draw a design or write a message with regular glue and then sprinkle with loose glitter for the same effect.
  • Learn the basics of heat embossing.
  • Make your own stained glass with glitter.

What are your favorite glitter projects? Do you have any more tips and tricks for crafters who want to begin working with glitter?
