Guest Post: Fingerprint Art for Mother’s Day

May 7, 2011 by FaveCrafts Leave a Comment

This guest post was written by Iris for My Baby Clothes Boutique.

I have to admit, I am one of those sentimental moms who saves every little item that her child makes for her or used as a baby. It is so hard for me to throw away things that I might want to look back on when my son or daughter grows up. For example, I don’t want to get rid of some of my son’s baby toys, like the first plush football I used to teach him to catch when he was an infant and couldn’t even roll over. What if he becomes a pro football player and I want to pull out that first football he played with? Or what about the first drawing he scribbled for me as a toddler–what if he becomes a famous painter and I want to look at his first art piece? And I can’t get rid of his first pair of swimming goggles; some say he could be the next Michael Phelps! I can go on and on, but as the years go by and we collect more things, sometimes I have to just part with certain items that we don’t have room to store (like drawers full of my son’s craft projects from preschool). Artwork takes over our refrigerator and shelves fill up with projects that eventually fall apart. Thankfully my husband is very tidy and he is very good at helping me decide which items we should keep and which items I unfortunately have to part with.

Well, Mother’s Day is right around the corner and my husband always has a difficult time deciding what kind of gift to give me. He always gives me a gift card from my favorite store (yes, I absolutely love gift cards. I know some people don’t think gift cards are personal enough, but for a stay-at-home mom like me who is very budget-oriented, I am absolutely thrilled when I receive a gift card knowing that I don’t have to feel guilty spending the gift card on myself!). But since he also knows how sentimental I am, he also adds a homemade project to go alongside the gift card that always makes me so proud. This part of the gift is the part that is difficult for him. Because he knows I keep all of our children’s special projects, he doesn’t want to add another item to throw in the “craft drawer”. So last year, he finally came up with a gift that was made by our 4-year-old son, but also looked modern enough to match the style of our home and would stay on the shelf for display – forever! Yes, he was not going to make me throw this one away!

It was a simple glass flower vase, decorated with beautiful painted flower petals all around the vase. The best part is the fact that each of these beautiful flower petals were made by our son’s precious fingerprints. Our one-year-old unfortunately could not participate since she was not good enough to listen to Daddy’s instructions, although I know there is one little fingerprint on the vase that belongs to her. All it took was one glass vase and different colored enamel paints to create this project, and of course, very special fingers. You can use all kinds of glass to create a gift like this. When my son’s preschool teacher came over for a play date and she saw the vase, it gave her an idea for the school art festival they were participating in. They used wine glasses instead of a vase and it made such a beautiful display for the art festival. You can use jars, bottles, the possibilities are endless, but one thing I know for sure, this is a gift that would make any mother proud and would gladly be displayed on a shelf for a lifetime.

Many people who visit our house see my special vase and think that the artwork on the vase is professionally painted, and they are surprised to find out that it was my 4-year-old son who created it. See, I told you that my son could be a famous painter!

Iris is a very crafty mom who likes to work on a budget. Her ideas are shared through her blog as well as with My Baby Clothes Boutique. Dress your babies in the best baby clothes, cutest tutus and most adorable baby headbands this summer!

Ask Maria “COE of Glass”

December 24, 2010 by Maria 1 Comment

I really would like to learn to fuse glass, but am confused about what COE means?

When working with glass it is important to know the COE or coefficient of expansion. This is understood by the assignment of a number like 90 COE or 104 COE. The bottom line is that you can’t mix 90 COE with glass that has a 104 COE. COE is the fractional change in the area, length or volume per unit change in temperature of the glass at a given constant pressure. This means that the different pieces of glass fused together have to be compatible in the rate of heat expansion and cooling contraction. If the COEs of two pieces of glass aren’t compatible the glass will fracture and break, never truly fusing together as one piece of glass.  Keep your glass well-marked to avoid mixing COEs. If you don’t know the COE of the glass you are using, then test with small pieces of the glass to see if the glass is compatible.

Read more information on COE on the Warm Glass site.

Check out the easy beginner fusing project shown above!

How to: Craft with Glitter

August 18, 2010 by FaveCrafts 1 Comment

Glitter is one of the most versatile materials to craft with. You can use glitter on fabric, glass, plastic, paper, or wood. You can wear glitter in your hair, on your nails, in your makeup, or on your clothing and accessories. You can knit or crochet with glitter yarn, you can use glitter with rubber stamping in scrapbooking and cardmaking, and you can add a little extra glitz to everything in your home with glitter. Everyone likes a little sparkle now and then, from children to teens to grandparents. Use this guide to get you started with glitter!

Glitter 1Glitter 2Glitter 4Glitter 4

Types of glitter

Low-Grade Chunky Glitter: This is the kind of glitter you used in school to make hand-print Thanksgiving decorations and other art projects. You may still have some stuck to your kitchen table from that craft you glittered 20 years ago.

Spray-On Glitter: Use this type of glitter on fabric or in projects such as wreath-making that need a uniform coating of sparkle. Spray-on glitter comes in an aerosol can, like spray paint.

Glitter Glue: Squeeze this gel onto paper projects, clothing you’re embellishing, or other crafts that need a three dimensional glitter finish.

Fine Powder Glitter: Use this glitter to emboss with rubber stamping projects or in your scrapbooks.

Read this comprehensive list for more information.

Ways to Craft with Glitter

Crochet or Knit with Glitter Yarn: Glitter yarn isn’t exactly glitter in the traditional sense; rather, it’s yarn that is mixed with strands of metallic thread for a glittery look. Check out these gorgeous glittery yarn projects on FaveCrafts:

Tips and Tricks for Working with Glitter:

  • Read how to incorporate glitter into your crafts.
  • Use a noodger to fix mistakes.
  • Work with loose glitter over a piece of newspaper to catch and reuse the extra bits that fall.
  • If you don’t have glitter glue, draw a design or write a message with regular glue and then sprinkle with loose glitter for the same effect.
  • Learn the basics of heat embossing.
  • Make your own stained glass with glitter.

What are your favorite glitter projects? Do you have any more tips and tricks for crafters who want to begin working with glitter?

How to: Make Unique Christmas Gifts for Women

    December 9, 2009 by FaveCrafts 1 Comment

The Christmas season is always a tough one for me. We know it’s coming and we count down the days, yet every year it surprises me and I am never prepared for it. With the economy slowly coming back, it’s still tough to spend a lot of money especially for those with large families like me. This year, my budget is very tight and therefore I have resulted in making some homemade gifts. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on such extravagant gifts, but now you can have a low budget and still create something beautiful, after all, it’s the thought that counts, right?

The women in my immediate family are my three older sisters and my mom. I know them well and I know their personalities. Unique gifts for women can be far and few in between if you don’t quite know what they’re into. Luckily, I have a few ideas that may help you out.

If there is a woman in your life who likes to drink in social situations or even collect beautiful glasses then a great gift for her can be a wine goblet. All you have to do is buy a wine goblet of any size and any shape, whatever you wish. Get some paints and go at it. My favorite goblets are ones that my mom and I both have. They have ladies painted on them. Using fun paints, like a pink color you can paint a skirt and add some yellow for some blond hair. The most fun part about this kind of goblet is the stem. You can paint it whatever color you wish, draw a vertical line down the center and it becomes her legs. You can then paint a pair of shoes on the base part of the glass. I love it! The painted nutcracker goblet is somewhat of an example. He has blue pants. Use your imagination and creativity. Your woman friend will love it!

Some other great and unique gifts for women are the more sentimental ones like a scrapbook, a calendar or a photo frame. These are all pretty similar in the way you make them. For all of them you can collect as many or as little photographs as you want. My suggestion for the calendar is at least 12 photos, one for each month, but the more you have the more fun it is. To make a scrapbook, you can really go old style and use construction paper for your pages. Glue your photos on the pages; however you wish to arrange them. I personally have the fun scissors with the designed edges; it makes for a pretty borderline for the photo. After gluing is all done you can take markers, glitter, stickers and fun embellishments to make the pages look how you want. Once this is all done you can use a hole puncher, make three holes along the side of the scrapbook and then tie all the pages together. If you want something more sturdy you can always put the scrapbook in a folder of some sort.

As for the calendar, just glue whichever photos you wish on any month. I like to go in chronological order and use Christmas photos for the winter season and vacationing for the summer months. Again, you can use stickers and embellishments of your liking.

For a photo frame, you can buy a wooden frame, any size. Buy some wooden letters to glue on top of the frame. Plan accordingly so you can spell something out like sister or best friend. You can then paint the actual frame and the letters then glue the letters on. Add some glitter and some glam, put the photo inside and you’re done. Add a personal note on the back so they’ll always remember who it’s from.

Some other Christmas gifts for women:

    Crochet Winter Gear
    Wall Decor
    Felt Needle Book

Art in the Park Recap: Amy White

August 18, 2009 by FaveCrafts Leave a Comment

    Hey crafters!

Martinez’s Susana Street Park was in full swing this past Sunday for the 40th annual Art in the Park.

    artinthepark09flier-3

I was a first time participant in this event and didn’t know quite what to expect. You couldn’t have asked for better weather, the sun was shining and the Park has plenty of trees to provide shade for vendors as well as it’s patrons. The park was packed with booths. Many of vendors were fine artists selling paintings of landscapes as well as peddling their portraiture. There were wood workers, ceramic artisans as well as stained glass.

    ceramics stainedglass

Hometown pride was plentiful, the food booths and musicians who played for attendees were all hometown and local favorites. My favorite booth by far was the “trash to treasure boutique” where for a small donation children were encouraged to build “junk art” magnets from recycled and reclaimed materials. The Ruthie and Friends booth was well frequented throughout the day and each member of our art collective several items. We had many happy customers who purchased our textiles, magnets, jewelry and mini-collages. I’d recommend this event for people who either make or are fond of folk-art, traditional art, or if you’re looking for one of a kind pieces to add to your collection.

If you like some of the crafts you see here you should check out some of the glass projects FaveCrafts has to offer. There’s also some great jewelry you can make!
