DIY Jewelry in Glass Vials

June 16, 2015 by AllFreeJewelryMaking

Fairy dust, terrariums, bottle messages…oh my!

Every day, I’m looking for new and unique homemade jewelry that I can wear with practically everything. I especially love those cheesy, inspirational words scrawled across a silver pendant–no, I’m not kidding. My preference for jewelry is utterly extreme. I either need a statement necklace with a rose-gold watch or my silver knock-off Pandora charm bracelet with a simple silver pendant necklace. I mean, go big or go home, right? Some days, a long, v-shaped  necklace suits my fancy. Do you know what my v-shaped necklaces consist of? Stuff I collected from the 7th grade… I’m sure you can imagine the horror of my 2006-2007 school wardrobe. Since I don’t feel what I own is age appropriate for right now, I might as well make it! Simple and interesting are my goals for DIY jewelry…

Glass Vial Jewelry

Those glass bottles and vials are all the rage. You know, the ones that resemble a miniature version of a message-in-a-bottle? I’m sure you love the idea of those tiny message-in-a-bottle crafts you see, but you just don’t know what to do with them. Sure, they would look good in a shadow box display with your seashells that you collected during your vacation, or they would be adorable as an accent detail in your scrapbook. But jewelry?

You’ve often found yourself asking these questions when it comes to homemade glass bottle jewelry: How do I even begin to make them? How do I make them age appropriate? I don’t like necklaces, but I want to use the glass vials.

Sweetie, you’ve come to the right place. Below is a list of atypical crafts for this glass bottle jewelry. They aren’t your common message-in-a-bottle’s, but there are some that a notable messages within the bottle. Okay, okay, so it technically is still a message-in-a-bottle, but it isn’t always your vow of irrevocable love. You can give yourself your own words of inspiration, or channel your inner fairy with some glitter (because glitter makes everything better). Be sure to check out the terrariums-in-a-bottle! Whatever you choose to do, these timeless homemade necklaces, earrings, and rings will always be in style because of their creative designs and innovative ideas.

How to Upcycle Glass for Decorative Mosaics – It’s So Easy!

July 24, 2013 by FaveCrafts

This post is brought to you by Shahab Shokouhi, a glass design expert at www.dullesglassandmirror.com, a site that manufacturers of glass table tops, glass shelves, and all other glass and mirror products. Follow Dulles Glass and Mirror on Pinterest to see how they’re changing the way glass products are manufactured, customized and delivered.

Kitchens and bathrooms the world over are getting eco-friendly updates with countertops made out of recycled glass bits and pieces. But rest assured that even if you don’t have a countertop’s worth of materials, there are still tons of creative ways to breathe new life into your cracked or broken beautiful glass bottles, vases and mirrors.

One way to upcycle your glass fragments is to design your own custom glass mosaic such as Beach Mosaic Art wall decor! So here’s a bit more on how to create treasure out of those shards you might have otherwise trashed.

Many Mosaics

The first step to designing your mosaic artwork is to compile your glass fragments and pieces. Examine your stockpile: depending on the sizes and shapes of your glass pieces, as well as your color assortment, one design option may stand out from the rest.

For semi-uniform or consistent pieces, you might choose a repeating pattern or linear design like stripes or checks.
For an assortment of sizes and shapes in the same color family, you could go with something more abstract, like the design for the Floral Mosaic Shelf above.
If you are interested in a more precise and detailed project, consider creating a mosaic “picture” with glass as your medium. Using exactly the same philosophy as cross-stitch, this mosaic is created by plotting out your picture on graph paper and substituting your glass bits for the thread.

Glass Guidelines

To make mosaic projects like a Mosaic Butterfly Stepping Stone, you’ll need:

  • Craft Adhesive (like E-6000 or similar product)
  • Grey Sanded Grout (grey provides a better effect than white)
  • Gloves
  • Craft tweezers for precise placement

When you’re ready to begin, follow these guidelines:

  • Lay out your design without glue first to make sure you like the way it looks.
  • If you are not using translucent or otherwise see-through pieces, you can even draw out your design on the surface of whatever you are covering with a felt-tipped marker.
  • Leave space between the glass pieces as this will be filled in with grout once you have secured them all in place. This also means that you do not need to worry about them fitting together exactly.
  • When you are pleased with your layout, pick up the pieces of glass one at a time, using the craft tweezers or wearing the gloves if your glass does not have smooth edges, and apply a drop of adhesive glue to the back of each piece and press it firmly into place.
  • Once you are finished attaching all of the glass, allow the mosaic to dry overnight.
  • Wearing the gloves, apply a generous amount of grout and rub it into the gaps, ensuring all spaces are filled completely.
  • Wipe off excess with a damp towel and allow the mosaic to dry for at least 24 hours.

Now that you’ve seen how easy it is to create your own mosaic, what projects will you make?

Geek Crafts: Recycled DON’T PANIC Drink Set

April 18, 2012 by FaveCrafts

Welcome to the Geek Crafts column, your weekly dose of geeky goodness with Haley Pierson-Cox from The Zen of Making!

My local grocery store carries fancy carbonated lemonade in old fashioned bottles with clamp tops, and it’s one of my favorite summertime picnic treats. The bottles are so cool that I can never actually bring myself to recycle them with the rest of the glass, so I’ve amassed quite a collection over the years. But, thanks to the wonder that is glass etching cream, I’ve finally found a way to give them new life! In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to combine a beautiful glass bottle with a pair thrift store glasses to make a fun Hitchhiker’s Guide-inspired drink set. It’s cheap, fun, and Earth Day approved!

Materials

  • Adhesive-backed vinyl
  • Letter stencils
  • Craft knife with a detail blade
  • Large glass soda bottle or wine bottle, cleaned and with labels removed
  • 2 thrifted glasses
  • Etching cream
  • Small sponge brush
  • Tweezers
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Electronic cutter *optional

Step 1
Trace “DON’T PANIC.” onto a sheet of adhesive-backed vinyl, then carefully cut out the letters using a craft knife.

You may also use an electronic cutter to cut the vinyl. (I used my Silhouette SD for this project.)

Step 2
Thoroughly wash and dry the glasses and the bottle, then clean the outside surfaces with rubbing alcohol.

Step 3
Using tweezers, carefully apply the vinyl templates to the bottle and the glasses, making sure that the edges of the letters are cleanly adhered to the glass surface with no gaps or bubbles.

Step 4
Apply etching cream to the letters using a sponge brush. Follow the instructions on the container, and be careful not smudge the etching cream or let it run onto other parts of the glass.

Step 5
Once the etching cream has finished working, wash it off, then peel the vinyl template off of the glasses and the bottle. Once the vinyl is removed, wash each piece thoroughly before using.

That’s all for now! See you next Wednesday for more geek craft fun!
