However, if you have more of a green thumb than I do, you should try these indoor garden ideas! Find ideas below for making terrariums, decorating terra cotta pots, planting succulents, and more! Gotta Make These Terra Cotta Pot Crafts

July 22, 2015 by FaveCrafts

What very few people know about me is that I have a knack for gardening. I’m talking about the flower kind of gardening, not the food kind of gardening. When it comes to trying to grow food it almost never works out. Plants die, I over water them, or, at least in Missouri, there’s a nasty dry-spell that seems like there is never enough water. My favorite flowers are hydrangeas. The only thing about my gardening is that it needs to adapt to the city life. I wish I could live in both the city and the country. I know, it’s called the suburbs, but the city has so much life and culture, but then the country has some good soil for my hydrangeas. I always have to make-do with good ol’ terra cotta pots. They are the staple item for gardeners both food and flowers. The best thing about terra cotta pots is that you can leave them their burned-orange color, or you can decorate them to match your decor, inside or outside.

Terra Cotta Pots

Terra cotta pot crafts especially became popular when the DIY fairy garden theme came about. You remember: the broken pots with miniature houses and cute stone paths made out of pebbles, with tiny foliage to make the “fairy” have her own garden. They were such cute little fairy themed crafts. I’ve seen people go so hard core on their fairy gardens that it would take up an expansive amount of space—as in half of their backyard. Don’t get me wrong, I love themed gardens as much as the next person (my plan is to have an English countryside, with stone walls and everything) because it takes some serious dedication to think of and construct them.

What frustrates me is when my veggies die mid-season, and I have an empty pot with nothing to plant in it. Oh I know, I could plant more, but I work like a train. I have a schedule and I stick to it. Sometimes, though, I don’t want to just plant more stuff. I want to create more things to put into my garden. Even upcycle pots and place them around my apartment as some rustic decor. These are the cutest terra cotta pot crafts I have ever seen. If you have leftover stuff from your own fairy garden that has magically become a ghost town, just recycle the pot and make some fun pot crafts.

How to Make Your Own Faux Chalkboard Garden Stakes

June 5, 2013 by FaveCrafts

This project is brought to you by Latrice Murphy from Any Occasion.

Is your garden planted yet? I’m a few weeks behind on mine due to rain and cold weather here in Illinois. However, now I’ve finally got my little sprouts ready to go. This year, I want to really make my garden fun to look at and make it easy to find what I’m harvesting. The chalkboard craze has gotten to me, so I figured out how to carry its coolness into my garden this year. I created these Faux Chalkboard Garden Stakes in just a few steps. Best of all, it cost me only about $2 to create this project!

I kept it simple with black and white and didn’t get real artsy with the writing. You definitely could use a different style pen and make these really unique.

Materials:

  • Wooden stakes
  • Black spray paint
  • White sharpie paint pen with a medium tip

Instructions:

Lay out stakes on something protective and give each side two coats of paint. Make sure to let each layer dry before spraying the next.

Bring them inside to dry over night.

Create your writing by getting the pen started on a scratch piece of paper and doing it however you like. You can write with a pencil first for a guide if you decide to do cursive or calligraphy.

That’s it! It only takes three easy steps to add some charm to your garden this year.

Link Love: Inspired By Fairy Tales

May 16, 2013 by FaveCrafts

In a recent staff meeting, my fellow craft editors and I were discussing popular topics in e-mail newsletters (are you a subscriber?). During our conversation, we realized that fairy tale-inspired projects are particularly hot right now. It seems that crocheters, knitters, quilters and everyone in between wants to take a mental trip to another time and place where woodland creatures rule and fairies fly around all day long. We can all use a little mental vacation, and a one-way ticket to your favorite fairy land is completely free – what could be better?

You might think that fairy crafts are a little juvenile, but that isn’t always the case. In fact, there are so many lovely projects for craft experts as well as beginners. Add a touch of whimsy to your garden by decorating a plain ceramic pot with paint and paper doilies. A Floral Fairy Clay Pot can be displayed in your backyard or on your front stoop and will instantly put you in a good mood. Be sure to include embellishments such as homemade bread dough flowers and jewelry chains to give your project a personal touch. Now that the outside of your home is covered with fairy tale touches, it’s time to think indoor decor. Grab a clean recycled mason jar and get to work on a Recycled Fairy Jar. Create a woodland habitat inside the glass and add in a plastic fairy, sheet moss and silk flowers. If you love needlefelting or simply want to try something new, create a Whimsical Fairy Nymph – little girls will love this tiny handmade doll!

The next time you feel stressed or anxious, consider creating a fairy or woodland-inspired craft. These projects will transport you to a calm, happy place filled with fairies and adorable creatures. While you can’t stay in the woodlands forever, you can capture your favorite aspects and keep a little piece of the magic with you at all times.

Link Love: Garden Crafts for Spring

March 28, 2013 by FaveCrafts

They say that March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb, and this month has really lived up to that reputation. From sub-zero temperatures to snowy days, there have been no shortage of weather related catastrophes in my neck of the woods. Luckily, however, April means the true start of spring. I love the blooming flowers, green leaves and, of course, warmer weather. One fun way to celebrate spring is by heading outside and planting a few flowers. Better yet, if you have the space, cultivate your own garden and fill it with handmade items.

There are so many ways to transform even the smallest space into a pretty garden. If you have a flower bed, you’ll want to create a Bead Buster Garden Stake or a Butterfly Garden Stake. Both of these projects add a fun touch to a sea of florals. If you don’t have access to a mound of dirt, you can use decorative clay pots and planters to add color to your space.  Our roundup, 10 Clay Posts You’ll Fall In Love With, features creative DIY ideas to get you started.

Head out to your garden, take a deep breath and celebrate spring – you deserve it after this winter season!
