Color Blocking and Upcycled Clothing Ideas

9 Ways to Transform Old T-Shirts

Color blocking is slated to come back in full force over the next few months. As the sun comes out and our world gets just a bit brighter, our clothes should be doing the same. Color blocking is an amazing way to wear bright, stunning colors while still looking chic. Plus, many color blocking pieces are extremely flattering and slimming. Mostly black pieces can really help you look trim and adding color blocking to those pieces means you do not have to sacrifice flair. Whether you are looking for a color block dress pattern or searching for a DIY t-shirt reconstruction, one of these 9 Color Blocking and Upcycled Clothing Ideas will surely become a staple in your already fantastic wardrobe.

I personally love color blocking on clothes. It never really goes out of a style and always looks timeless and vintage. One of my favorite dresses in my closet is a mod color blocked dress that features big splashes of blue. Plus, color block pieces are so simple that you can pretty much pair them with anything. If you like big jewelry, you can go totally 80s with chunky, costume jewelry. If you are more of a subtle girl, you can wear a simple pearl necklace with a color blocked piece to look like a sassy Audrey Hepburn.

I have compiled these particular projects together because they combine my love of color blocking and bright colors with my love of t-shirt reconstruction. Many of these mod and fab pieces are created by upcycling t-shirts and other clothing. I just love to be able to give new life to an old piece. It saves you money and gives you a sassy new wardrobe in the process.

Your New Favorite Sewing Projects For Spring

This post is brought to you by Mary Egan from CraftFoxes.

Believe it or not, spring is here (and summer is on its way)! Now is the time to start looking for some sewing projects that you can wear when the warm weather arrives. Although sewing and knitting are often associated with colder weather, there are plenty of warm-weather wearables you can create with fabric and thread. There’s a chance that cool weather might stick around a little longer, so consider this time to work on some new DIY fashion for the spring months.

Ruffle Neck Romper

When it’s warm outside, the perfect outfit for your little one might just be a romper. This romper is easy to make and you can choose whichever pattern of fabric you’d like. The pattern is adapted from an older pattern to make it more modern in appearance, with a shirred waist and ruffle neck. This pattern is simple and the tutorial, found on CraftFoxes, will lead you step-by-step through the creation of this romper. Choose a fresh, spring-colored floral fabric and create an adorable wardrobe item for your little one.

Easy Tote Bag

If you travel to the park, library, or work, you’ll probably need a bag to carry your belongings. This bag is screen-printed with different airport codes to create a travel-friendly theme. First, you need to sew the bag and its handle, then screen-print the letters on using a freezer paper method. For this project, you’ll need fabric, freezer paper, fabric ink, sponges, and some other crafting supplies. You don’t have to use airport codes for your decoration – use your own imagination for letting or images.

Visit CraftFoxes for this tote bag pattern.

Get Ready for Swimsuit Season

Springtime sewing means that summer is not far around the corner! Now is the perfect time to beef up your summer wardrobe. Did you know you can sew a bikini? It’s true! This tutorial on CraftFoxes will teach you how to make your own bikini, saving you time and helping you create an item that’s fitted especially for your body. If you’re learning to sew with new and different materials, this project would be a great introduction to sewing with Lycra, which is the material best suited for swimsuit patterns. For this project you’ll need enough Lycra to create a bikini for your body type and well as the lining, elastic, plastic “sew-in” boning, ribbon, and a clasp closure. You’ll need specialized materials your own bikini and it might be a bit more difficult than other projects, but this CraftFoxes post offers a pattern to download and a clear tutorial.

Check out this bikini pattern.

Shirt Patterns

Everyone needs some flowing, comfortable shirts for the warmer months. This post at CraftFoxes offers several different ways to create your own spring shirts as well as ways to adapt some of your old shirts for new uses. You can make a festival top from a men’s shirt that you have lying around the house or add a dip-dye ombre effect to any old shirt. There are projects in this post that allow you to add crochet side panels, a Peter Pan collar or add ruffles to any shirt. If you’re looking to update some old pieces and recycle them in the process, be sure to check these projects out!

Game of Thrones Crafts Are Coming…

Since the first episode of Game of Thrones aired,  I quickly became obsessed with the show. As many of my fellow GOT-enthusiasts can understand, I have suffered through massive losses at the hands of the (genius) writers, yet still keep coming back for more. Like every other Game of Thrones fan, I have a hard time choosing a favorite character, for fear of losing them. That’s why I have decided that commemorating each House is the only way to deal with the inevitable loss we will see this season. Over at AllFreeHolidayCrafts.com we’ve rustled up some pretty amazing ideas.

GOT-Collage

Take your time, choose your house, and get started on a few of these handmade ideas that will have you either screaming, “Dracarys!”, warning that winter is coming, or lying through your teeth (Cough, cough, Lannisters, ahem).

House Targaryen
    “Dracarys!”

Dragon Eggs Dragons are perhaps the most exciting part of Game of Thrones, making Daenerys Targaryen a popular favorite. The crafts below are inspired by House Targaryen, in many different ways. Embrace Khaleesi’s fashion sense, and make your very own set of Dragon Eggs – what could be cooler than that?

  1. Dany’s Dragon Eggs
  2. Drogon the Dragon Hat
  3. Dragon Skin Scarf
  4. Khaleesi’s Beaded Headdress
  5. Map of Westeros

House Stark
   “Winter is Coming.”

Mystic Forest Shawl The Stark family is known for their unyielding honor, which some would say has cost them over the past 3 seasons. Celebrate the most honorable House from Westeros with the tutorials below. Inspired by Winterfell fashion and the Stark dire wolves, these crafts are for winter warriors only.

  1. Red Wedding Veil
  2. Fuzzy Wolf Bonnet
  3. Style Your Hair Like Sansa
  4. Enchanted Godswood Fashion Cape
  5. Winter is Coming Banner
  6. Mystic Forest Shawl

House Lannister
“A Lannister always pays his debts.”

Golden Goddess GownA Lannister may always pay his debts, but we wouldn’t mind saving ourselves from any interaction with them at all. This deceitful House of Westeros may be on top for now, but hopeful fans like myself are ready for revenge. (The North Remembers!) We do have to hand it to the capitol dwellers when it comes to fashion; Cersei’s attire is always enviable.

  1. Cersei’s Knit Cape
  2. Lion Baby Booties
  3. Merlot Hooded Cape
  4. DIY Body Chain
  5. Golden Goddess Gown

Sewing Patterns for Clothes

Another great reason to start sewing? You can save a ton of money in the long run. Clothes and accessories go in and out of style all the time, so you’re often buying something from the mall, wearing it a few times and moving on to the next thing. A handmade item costs so much less than a store-bought piece and it’s so much more sentimental in the long run. You don’t have to start from scratch, either. Rework an old men’s shirt, oversized sweatshirts and other items to create something truly unexpected.

Sewing Patterns For Your Favorite Holidays

Need an excuse to get crafty? All you have to do is look at the calendar and find the next holiday. There are plenty of sewn decor items and wearables that can correspond with any holiday. In this eBook, you’ll find multiple patterns for Easter sewing projects. Make your own themed t-shirts, decorations and more – it’s all in this collection. There are also Christmas-inspired patterns and a great gift idea for Mother’s Day. Handmade items are so fun and meaningful, so get sewing and make it an extra special holiday.

Sewing Crafts For Decorating Your Space

When you have a case of the blahs, it’s nice to add a little taste of color to your space. Believe it or not, that single addition can really boost your mood. Add a sewn creation to your kitchen or living room and reap the rewards. Additionally, you can create more functional items like pillows and use them to decorate your home. If you aren’t ready to make a change, you can sew any of these items and give them as gifts. A hostess or friend will absolutely love the finished product.

Sewing Patterns for Bags

It sounds like a cliche to say that bags come in so many shapes and sizes, but it’s actually true! Check out the projects in this eBook and see what we mean. You’ll find patterns for everything from tiny clutches to oversized carriers for sleeping bags. One thing you can count on, though, is that all of these projects are perfect for beginners and so useful. These aren’t the kind of handmade items that you create and stick on a shelf. These are also great gift ideas for anyone in your life.
