Create Your Own Floral Cards & Send Seasonal Greetings

May 20, 2013 by FaveCrafts

This project is brought to you by Latrice Murphy from Any Occasion.

I have been waiting for spring for a long time here in Illinois and it’s finally arrived. This has gotten me in the mood to create projects with flowers, so naturally I thought some floral cards would be great to have on hand in order to brightened someone’s day.  First off, I have to tell you that these were extremely easy to create using my Silhouette Die Cutting Machine on the Print and Cut setting. I tried a few techniques to make them more customized and dimensional.

Materials:

  • Silhouette Die Cutting Machine (Or you can print an image and hand-cut it out)
  • Various Distress Inks
  • Various stamps
  • Glossy Accents
  • 3-D adhesive
  • Sewing machine (optional)

Hugs Card:

I did some background stamping and inked the edges to created a bold background for these orange flowers. I layered two of the cuts for dimension. I also added glittered gems to the flower centers.

Warm Thoughts Card:

This got put on a pre-made dotted card base with bold yellow cardstock. I stitched that on after inking the edges. I then added my sentiment on a banner with a little washi tape. The rose got some dimension with a second flower being place on top. I finished the smaller flowers off with glossy accents and glitter.

warm-thoughts

Miss You Card:

This large set of three roses made for a fun card with simple misting and a doily in the background. I added some twine behind it for more texture and the sentiment banner hangs from the side. One rose was finished with glossy accents.

Delightful Card:

The last card was created with my favorite image. The detail on the cut was amazing, thorns and all. I stamped the back with dots and inked the edges. The flower I layered with a double flower and added a touch of glitter on it. The sentiment was stamped on the bottom in orange and again with the black outline.

I will be making lots of sets of these cards for gifts – they were that fun to make!

Meet and Make: Kristin Omdahl

September 9, 2011 by FaveCrafts

Today’s Meet and Make designer is Kristin Omdahl, the creater of the design company KRISTIN and website, StyledByKristin.com. Kristin loved to knit and crochet.

Let’s meet Kristin!

10 Fun Facts about Kristin Omdahl:

  1. I’m a single mom whose learning (and loving) to be a tomboy with my adventurous son – camping, fishing, sports and whatever else he comes up with!
  2. I learned to run, trained for, and ran a marathon last year (26.2 miles)
  3. I taught myself to knit and crochet while pregnant and living over seas
  4. I’m teaching myself how to play guitar right now. I want to learn to play “All Summer Long” by Kid Rock, and any Zac Brown Band or Bob Marley songs. I would love to play well enough to not embarrass myself at the beach.
  5. My favorite movies are The Godfather and P.S. I Love You. If the day ever came where I had to choose between Gerard Butler and Jeffrey Dean Morgan…
  6. I love to cook and bake, and enjoy experimenting with my own recipes. I’m especially fond of Mediterranean cooking: Italian, Lebanese, Moroccan & Greek.
  7. I love math more than I should admit. I find reasons to make calculations in my head all the time. And I calculate my gas mileage every time I fill my gas tank.
  8. I was a model as a teenager. I had the same agent at Cindy Crawford in Chicago, went to the same parties as the Victoria Secret models in New York and worked with Brooke Shields once. I met a rock star at a party once, was so afraid of his proposition, I hid in the bathroom for half an hour until he left!
  9. I love to read before going to sleep every night. My favorite books are “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coehlo, “The New Earth” by Eckhart Tolle, “The Witching Hour” by Anne Rice, “The Stand” by Stephen King and my favorite series is “The Outlander” by Diana Gabaldon.
  10. If money were no object, I’d live in a palace on the sea. Otherwise, I hope to one day live in a cottage or hut on the beach.

Top Crochet Afghan Patterns for June

July 11, 2011 by AllFreeCrochetAfghanPatterns

Welcome to the world of crochet afghan patterns. Every week, AllFreeCrochetAfghanPatterns publishes its newsletter, Laying It All Out. This month, we featured all kinds of cool patterns – from fun florals to patriotic projects. Without further ado, here are the top five links our readers loved last month.

Trends: simple patterns, advanced patterns, floral motifs, stripes

5.  All-American Denim Stripes

This month, we set our spotlight on patriotic patterns. This afghan is versatile – it’s not all about stars and stripes or big motifs. Instead, it’s understated but still pretty. Interestingly, we asked our Facebook fans if they found patriotic patterns to be inappropriate. See what they had to say about this controversial topic.

4. Prairie Star Afghan

This pattern has been featured numerous time – it keeps coming back because it’s so popular! Even though the Prairie Star Afghan is an advanced pattern, it’s not impossible by any standard. Crocheters with a little experience and a lot of determination will find this to be the perfect summer project.

3. 16 Simple Crochet Afghan Patterns

This is the first of two pattern collections in the top five for this month. When you think simple, you might not think crochet afghan projects. Generally, these patterns take time and care to complete. But these patterns are called “simple”, “easy” and “beginner” for a reason. This list is filled with all types of patterns – from vintage afghans to granny squares.

2. Tulip Square

There’s so much more than meets the eyes when it comes to this square. When I hear Tulip Square, I immediately picture a big tulip motif in the center of a square. But this patterns is different – it features a tulip motif that runs throughout the square. This is an advanced pattern that offers so much. It’s sophisticated and pretty without being over the top.

1. 11 Free Afghan Crochet Patterns for Beginners

Behold – our most popular link from June! This collection made a huge splash this month. I totally get it – beginner patterns are not only great for new crocheters, it’s also a great way to hone your skills. Experienced crocheters can practice what they know and create something quick without a ton of hassle – what could be better? If you’re looking for projects like the World’s Easiest Crocheted Afghan (which is pictures above), you’ll love this pattern collection. There’s a reason this link is so popular – it’s filled with easy-to-complete patterns you can start on now.

Honorable Mentions:

  1. 19 Advanced Crochet Patterns
  2. 15 Fast Crochet Afghan Patterns
  3. Modern Flower Afghan

How to Decorate Flower Pots

June 4, 2010 by FaveCrafts

Add color to your garden, patio or indoor space with simple flower pot crafts. Flower pots are functional blank canvases, encouraging a wide range of creativity. You can paint, decoupage, stamp and embellish as part of your flowers pot crafts. Come up with your own flower pot craft projects with these ideas.

How to Decorate Clay Pots by Heidi Borchers & Tiffany Windsor

Painting

After purchasing a flower pot, sand the pot down before painting. You should also seal the inside of the flower pot with an oil-based polyurethane to protect your painted design from water penetration.

If you are painting flower pots for outdoor placement, use a paint specifically designed for outdoor use. DecoArt Patio Paint is water and weather-resistant and adapts well to changing temperatures. Outdoor paints also mean your flower pot will be easy to clean.

Try painting sections of the flower pot in different colors. Use painter’s tape to mark off the top lip of the pot and paint a coordinating color. Or, create several bands around the flower pot with the painter’s tape and create stripes on your flower pot.

Bright colors work well in gardens. To select a color scheme, look at design or craft resources on colors like Paper Crafter’s Color Companion by C&T Publishing.

Paint two to three coats of each color on your flower pot. If you want to add a design to your flower pot, paint the background a nice, muted color such as light yellow.

Use stencils to paint words or shapes onto your flower pot. You can also use this technique to label the contents of the flower pots decoratively, such as “Basil” or “Chives.”

Use a sponge to paint your flower pots. Paint all over in one or two colors, or create bursts of colors with a round sponge that look very much like flowers. You can also cut a normal kitchen sponge into a shape such a heart or star.

Decoupage

Cut out words and images from scrapbook papers, magazines and even junk mail to decoupage your flower pot. Create a theme by selecting similar words or images, for example Spring.

Tissue paper is a great material to decoupage flower pots. You can use one color or a variety of coordinating colors for a fun, semi-transparent look. Crinkle the tissue paper in your hands and tear into pieces. Use a foam brush to apply decoupage glue (such as Mod Podge) to your flower pot. Smooth tissue paper pieces over flower pot in a random pattern. Cover with another coat of decoupage glue.

For fun, add a coat or accents of glitter or sparkle, such as with Tulip 3D Sparkle Paint.

For outdoor placement, you will need to cover your decoupage work with a coat of UV-resistant acrylic coating, like those made by Krylon.

Embellishment

Yarn- Wrap yarn or twine tightly around the lip of your flower pot, gluing as you go. Yarn-wrapping creates an interesting textured look.

Buttons- Flat buttons are a fun way to decorate flower pots. Paint flowers on your pot and glue buttons as the centers the flowers. Add a line of buttons around the top of the flower pot. Randomly glue buttons all over the flower pot.

Crochet Floral Kitchen Sets

July 22, 2009 by FaveCrafts

I’m not really one for cut flowers. I always find the inevitable browning and petal-falling of cut flower arrangements to be a bit sad. Like anyone though, I appreciate the beauty of flowers. I love looking out into our garden while waiting for the kettle to boil and admiring my boyfriend’s green thumb. With some brand new crochet patterns at FaveCrafts, I also like the idea of bringing the shapes and colors of flowers into the kitchen in a lasting way. These kitchen set crochet patterns are all inspired by specific flowers. Pick your favorite and create beautiful decorative accents.
