15 Perfect Spring Felt Projects You’ll Want To Make

April 10, 2017 by FaveCrafts 2 Comments

When you think of craft supplies, you likely envision markers in an assortment of bright colors, glittery sequins, and colorful beads. But what about felt? The unsung hero of craft supplies, felt is sturdy and flexible, and can be folded, sewn, and cut into decorations, accessories, and so much more. Despite its versatility and ease of use, this material is one that you might not be using all that frequently. So why not shake things up a bit? This year, you’ll want to put spring felt projects at the top of your crafting to-do list.

15 Perfect Spring Felt Projects You’ll Want To Make

Hop To It And Make These Easter Felt Crafts

Easter is almost here! Are you ready? If you could use some cute decorations for the holiday (and who couldn’t?!?), then take another look at felt. While you could use paper to make decorations, it’s important to keep in mind that the material has a fleece-like feel to it. There really isn’t a better option for making fuzzy lambs, ducks, and bunnies! Your Easter felt crafts will look and feel soft. In addition, these projects will be an adorable addition to the festivities.

Flower Felt Projects That Will Always Be In Bloom

The calendar might say it’s spring, but you might live in an area where warm weather and blooming flowers won’t return for a while. With that in mind, you can still add flowers to your home when you make flower felt projects. The material can be folded over and over in an assortment of ways without losing its shape, resulting in a design that is both intricate and unique. The softness of the material also gives the flower a more realistic appearance, too. When selecting colors for your flower felt project, consider opting for material in vibrant colors. Need a little help on creating felt flowers? This video tutorial on the Felt Flower Corsage Craft can get you started.

Repurpose Sweaters With DIY Felt Projects

Are you in the midst of spring cleaning and have discovered sweaters that have seen better days? Don’t pitch those sweaters! You can repurpose those sweaters and other knit or crochet items into felt, which can be used for future craft projects or repurposed into comfortable pillows or other home décor items. And how do you make felt, anyway? Whether you want to toss that old sweater in hot water or use another method, our helpful guide on felting can get you started. Reusing a beloved item in a new way is eco-friendly and an inexpensive way to add to your craft supplies. Win-win!

Needlefelted DIY Wall Art

November 13, 2015 by Lisa Fulmer 1 Comment

Needlefelting is one of the easiest crafts to learn because it’s fun, it’s colorful, and it’s a great stress reliever too. With a needle punch tool and a little imagination, you can create whimsical DIY wall art project like this silly sunny daisy. Needlefelting is like painting with wool – try it, you’ll like it! Feel free to use this technique to get creative and design your own DIY art projects for your home.

Needlefelted DIY Wall ArtSupplies:

  • Felt sheets
  • Wool roving
  • Yarn
  • Needle punch tool
  • Foundation brush
  • White pencil
  • Embroidery floss and needle

Needlefelted DIY Wall Art

Start by drawing or tracing a design onto a sheet of felt with a white pencil. Place the felt on top of a foundation brush which is what you punch into. Then, pull off a few strands of wool roving to begin. A needle punch tool has five special barbed needles inside that work to lock fibers together as you punch straight up and down.

Needlefelted DIY Wall Art

Little by little, keep filling in your design with more strands of wool. You can work with a single color or blend colors just like you’re painting. Tap each strand in with just a few punches at first, to make sure you like it. You can easily pull the wool up off the felt sheet if you change your mind. Once you like it, then punch more to lock it in. Don’t over punch though – or too many of the fibers will disappear beneath the surface.

Needlefelted DIY Wall Art

Above is a picture of what the back side looks like – the needle forces the wool fibers through the felt. Lift your felt up off the brush every so often to reposition and to prevent all the fibers from sticking to the brush itself.

Needlefelted DIY Wall Art

Outline your design in desired with a soft yarn and punch it into place. Accent your design with embroidery. I added an outline stitch in the center of each petal.

Needlefelted DIY Wall Art

Now that your wool canvas has been painted, you have several options for how to display it. You can sew it to a larger felt or fabric panel, frame it inside a shallow shadowbox, or mount it on a wood plaque with a dry adhesive like fabric tape. Enjoy!

Link Love: Clothespin Crafts

Who knew clothespins could be so valuable? I must admit, I don’t have many of these wooden clips lying around my home. Since I don’t line-dry my clothes and tend to use plastic froggy clips to keep my chip bags closed, I tend not to think about the importance on clothespins. Upon further research however, I’ve come to realize just how much I’m missing. Clothespins are cheap, versatile and so much fun to use for a ton of different crafts.

What’s great about clothespins is kids and adults can use them. Plus, you can use materials like markers, glue, tape and paint. so many materials to decorate them. One quick and simple clothespin craft I want to try Coffee Colored Vintage Clothespins. With spray paint, instant coffee and lace scraps, you can create a delicate design that looks like it’s straight out of Downton Abbey. Christmas is coming up, so now is the time to start working on those holiday projects. Use clothespins to make a tiny Clothespin Santa and Rudolph. Use easy-to-find supplies like google eyes and felt for this kid-friendly craft project. If you’re looking for a simple project to make after school, check out this tutorial for Cute Clothespin Bug Magnets. Stick these creations on your fridge – they’re both useful and adorable.

Gather up the kids or take the afternoon off and discover how many ways you can use clothespins. Who says you need to spend a fortune on craft supplies? Sometimes, you only need some simple, every day items to create the absolute best crafts.

  1. Clothespin Stars from Scissors and Spoons
  2. Felt Feather Clips from Wild OliveEasy
  3. DIY Washi Wooden Pegs from The Pink Doormat

Head Back To School With Style: How to Make a Felt Headband

July 25, 2013 by FaveCrafts 1 Comment

This tutorial is brought to you by Latrice Murphy from Any Occasion.

Triangles are showing up just about everywhere so I figured, why not hair accessories too! I created a signature felt triangle headband and I have to share with you how I created it. It’s super easy and takes just  a few minutes to make.

Here’s what you need:

  • Photo of headband and pieces
  • Felt
  • Plastic headband
  • Sewing machine or embroidery thread and needle
  • Hot glue gun

First, start by hand-cutting your triangle shapes. I didn’t measure or anything. After I got a good triangle that I liked, I use it as my template for the others. You’ll need 6 total.

Next, you want to add a very small amount of hot glue to the center of the triangles and create sandwiches. This just holds it together while you stitch. You can either complete he next step using a machine or use embroidery floss to hand stitch. I love the look of both. Sewing by machine is just faster for me. The embroidery floss gives it a much more handmade feel.

Then, you want to stack your pieces, overlapping  them slightly and gluing it together. Let it cool and then attach it to the headband with a small strip of felt.

Link Love: Inspired By Fairy Tales

May 16, 2013 by FaveCrafts 4 Comments

In a recent staff meeting, my fellow craft editors and I were discussing popular topics in e-mail newsletters (are you a subscriber?). During our conversation, we realized that fairy tale-inspired projects are particularly hot right now. It seems that crocheters, knitters, quilters and everyone in between wants to take a mental trip to another time and place where woodland creatures rule and fairies fly around all day long. We can all use a little mental vacation, and a one-way ticket to your favorite fairy land is completely free – what could be better?

You might think that fairy crafts are a little juvenile, but that isn’t always the case. In fact, there are so many lovely projects for craft experts as well as beginners. Add a touch of whimsy to your garden by decorating a plain ceramic pot with paint and paper doilies. A Floral Fairy Clay Pot can be displayed in your backyard or on your front stoop and will instantly put you in a good mood. Be sure to include embellishments such as homemade bread dough flowers and jewelry chains to give your project a personal touch. Now that the outside of your home is covered with fairy tale touches, it’s time to think indoor decor. Grab a clean recycled mason jar and get to work on a Recycled Fairy Jar. Create a woodland habitat inside the glass and add in a plastic fairy, sheet moss and silk flowers. If you love needlefelting or simply want to try something new, create a Whimsical Fairy Nymph – little girls will love this tiny handmade doll!

The next time you feel stressed or anxious, consider creating a fairy or woodland-inspired craft. These projects will transport you to a calm, happy place filled with fairies and adorable creatures. While you can’t stay in the woodlands forever, you can capture your favorite aspects and keep a little piece of the magic with you at all times.

Keep Kids Occupied With a DIY Felt Busy Book

April 3, 2013 by FaveCrafts Leave a Comment

This tutorial is brought to you by Latrice Murphy from Any Occasion.

I have three active kids and I’m always trying to come up with ways to keep them busy. I find lots of great ideas for this on Pinterest. I’ve seen different posts here and there about “felt busy books.” My littlest is just 20 months, so keeping him busy is a must, especially when we’re in the car. The catch is that I needed something that he couldn’t throw, put in his mouth and tear up. What’s better than a felt book with little activities on each page? Here is a peek at my finished book. I love how it turned out and he’s already been playing with it.

Materials:

  • Various felt sheets ( I use a eco fi felt that is nice and sturdy)
  • Three jump rings
  • Velcro adhesive backed dots
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Heavy duty hole punch
  • Fabric glue
  • Die cutting or templates

Instructions:

  1. Start out by planning your pages and cutting all the sheets of felt down  in half to create the pages.
  2. Cut out and arrange all the page pieces. My book had the following pages:
    1. Car with road
    2. Tic tac toe
    3. Dress up
    4. Shapes
    5. Tree
    6. House
    7. Barn
  3. Sew on your die cut pieces where needed.
  4. To make the pages place the right sides together and sew around three sides. Flip it like a pillow to the right side after done.
  5. Once all the pages are complete attach the front and back page to a binding piece.
  6. Next punch holes using a heavy duty hole punch to punch all the pages.
  7. Assemble the book with three large jump rings.

My son loves this book already. Even the two bigger kids are totally into helping him with it and playing tic tac toe.

I would have to say that planning is key on a project such as this. I decided in the end to add a pocket for the car page, a pocket on the dress up page and a strap to hold it closed nicely. I luckily hadn’t sewn anything together yet.

Enjoy the process of creating something your loved one will enjoy – I know I did.

Are you feeling a little … foxy? You certainly will after checking out these crafts. No, they’re not naughty crafts or even crafts inspired by the literary sensation 50 Shades of Grey (sorry in advanced to those who came here looking for any of those projects). These crafts are inspired by adorable, cuddly foxes! Right now, craft projects involving owls, foxes and other woodland creatures are popping up all over the web. We rounded up some of our favorite ideas for you to check out.

There are several ways to get foxy with your craft projects – you can incorporate images, colors and more. Quilters can add a fox to their next baby blanket with a Foxy Applique. The cute, understated look of this quilt makes it ideal for a baby nursery or kids’ room. Not so keen on images of foxes? Crochet your own Boa Wrap and Purse – the add-ons look like fox tails! This is a great cruelty-free wearable that will keep you warm all winter.

This winter, sew a cute fox scarf, create a paper banner or decorate a ukelele – foxes can be added to almost anything! This is the perfect season to stay inside and warm up by the fire with a cool craft project.
