Last Minute Father’s Day Crafts

June 18, 2015 by FaveCrafts

Father’s Day is almost here. Ohmygooodness I completely blanked. Between a new job, working out, wedding crafts, and, you know, eating I completely spaced. Guys, Dad’s do so much for us. I don’t even have to get on a pedestal for everyone to know how much your dad or father-figure do for their families. This holiday seems to get underscored a lot, especially in classrooms, because it is in the middle of the summer, but I feel like we should give our dads the same treatment as any appreciative holiday!

Last Minute Father’s Day Crafts

Man Cave SignsMy mom was always really good about homemade Father’s Day gifts. There is this frame with pictures of all three of us kids, painted, with the year, but this is the best part: my mom put all of our fingerprints on the frame with our full handprints on the back. Kid’s handprint crafts are the best for capturing that moment when they’re that age. I had made him a frame out of bottle caps one year (he still has that thing in his office). Honestly, any pictures of the kids doing a cute thing would make his day. My dad also has a thing for funny t-shirts. Personalize things. Make memories. We need to give Dad’s the appreciation they deserve or any father-figure. I always made two Father’s Day gifts when I was younger because I am very close with my uncle. Father’s Day is about appreciating the man or men in your life that mentor and help you in life.

This Father’s Day, don’t give Dad the same old tie or card. I know those are quick Father’s Day gifts, but these Father’s Day crafts are so much more fun, and he will love the hard work that you put into it. You can upcycle old ties that he doesn’t wear anymore and create a necktie wreath for your door or his office space. You can mimic my mom’s idea with the picture frame or use this recycled pop-can picture frame. If you’re in a quick fix, these gifts are a way to personalize the holiday while still saving you time. He will love your creativity in making these projects. If none of these still don’t fit your fancy, try some of these wire-work crafts and you can make a tie holder.

Sewing for Men: Tough Projects You Have to Try

May 20, 2013 by AllFreeSewing

Man, it sometimes seems like sewing projects are tailored only to women. What about the boys? After all, according to the U.S. census roughly 50% of the population is made up of men, so there’s really no need to exclude them from sewing adventures.

I’ve rounded up some sewing projects with men in mind. Make these as a gift to yourself, for dad, or for a boyfriend. Whatever excuse you need in order to sew one of these patterns is fine. What with Father’s Day, graduation parties, and birthdays coming up, chances are you don’t need to dig too deep for a reason to try out these awesome patterns.

I’ll start us out with a staple for many men: boxers. A fundamental part of a man’s daily life, the boxer has also made its way into women’s pajama collections because of their extreme comfiness. (Ergo, if you’re a lady reading this who has no one to gift these to, just make them for yourself.) Getting down to brass tacks though, these Boxer Shorts a serious money saver. If you’re looking to penny pinch then making your own boxers is one way you can. Have you seen prices for men’s boxers lately? They’re out of control. These shorts will keep you and your wallet happy.

 Boxer Shorts

I decided to go straight to the source to find another boxer pattern and found these instructions on How to Sew a Pair of Boxer Shorts from Man Made. Now you have two options for this totally necessary piece of clothing.

How to Sew a Pair of Boxer Shorts

Moving on to more masculine accessories is, you guessed it, this Men’s Wallet. It doesn’t get more manly than this, does it? Learn how to sew a wallet from these simple instructions. This is a great project because, again, it’s a money saver. Even basic wallets can rank around 100 clams at the department store. Dropping that much dough on something that sits in a pocket all day is malarkey. Sew a wallet that appeals to your tastes with this easy project.

 Men's Wallet

It’s time to add some dignity to the coffee cozy. If you’re going to make one, make it look manly. After all, your coffee cozy is your fierce protector braving the scalding hot temperatures of your morning Joe. Give it the look it deserves by crafting this Manly Coffee Cozy. You won’t find butterflies or flowers in this pattern. Consider gifting this to dad this Father’s Day. It’s a simple sewing project and will make dad feel tough as nails when he steps outside with his new-found sidekick, the coffee cozy.

 Manly Coffee Cozy

I saved the toughest for last. The Club Jacket is oh, so beautiful, yet requires careful attention while sewing. This is an advanced sewing project, friends. Don’t be deterred from making it, though! The instructions for this pattern are very accessible. I’d certainly say that stepping up your sewing game is worth a fitted jacket that looks as good as this one. You or your loved one shouldn’t be contained to small, medium, and large sizes only. Create a fit that is customized for you or a lucky man by sewing it up with this project.

 Club Jacket

Remember, Father’s Day is coming up. If you’re looking for more manly designs, find them here.

Be a Man: Jewelry Designs with a Masculine Look

April 26, 2013 by AllFreeJewelryMaking

Man does this jewelry look good. I’m not one to genderize much, but there’s something about these pieces that screams, “Manly!” With Father’s Day on the horizon, I got to thinking about unexpected gift ideas for dad. Then it occurred to me that he would never wear homemade jewelry. He’s just not that kind of person, but I am…

I’ve selected projects from AllFreeJewelryMaking and from around the blogosphere to aid you in your manly endeavors. Whether your dad wears bracelets, your boyfriend likes to browse through your jewelry box, or you just prefer masculine accessories, these do-it-yourself jewelry designs will hopefully aid you in your journey to manhood.

Manly Jewelry Designs Anyone Can Handle

Personally I wouldn’t mind seeing this particular DIY ring on a fella’s hand or my own. Its simplicity is straightforward and attractive. This ring hides nothing. As one who likes their rings like their men (eh-hem, honest), I highly suggest trying to learn How to Make a Simple Silver Ring. If you don’t want to keep this for yourself, at least you’ll brush up on your metalwork skills in the jewelry-making process.

How to Make a Simple Silver Ring

Think about making these DIY Cufflinks for those collar-and-tie men who also like to accessorize. When I saw this project on AllFreeJewelryMaking I was immediately struck. You can reuse some bolts and screws around your house and make these recyclable cufflinks. It will be an excuse to craft because, let’s face it, somebody at home has to watch the waste. What’s more, this project holds much more versatility than you may think. If you’re a trendy trailblazer, don’t make these cufflinks for your brother; make them for yourself!

DIY Cufflinks

I came across this Paracord Bracelet from Modern Jewelry. This is a strong bracelet reinforced with braided cords. I love the way this bracelet looks. I also happen to love the amazing video tutorial that shows you how to make this handmade bracelet.

Paracord Bracelet

Yet another pair of cufflinks. I just think they’re an under-appreciated piece of jewelry. While these Lego Cufflinks from Instructables aren’t necessarily manly, they certainly are boyish. I think I’ll make a pair for myself- that is for my 12-year-old cousin. In all seriousness, though, I think a lot of men would more than likely be drawn to these cufflinks. Keep them in mind as a possible homemade gift for a friend.

Lego Cufflinks

This last featured project is for the tough guys (or girls) out there. Learn how to make a necklace from this Personalized Dog Tag Necklace Tutorial. You can inscribe these tags with your name or a special message. These can easily be sentimental gifts for loved ones as well.

Personalzied Dog Tag Necklace

I know there are so many more “manly” jewelry designs to explore, but after all, a good man’s jewelry design is hard to find. Hopefully you’ve gleaned some ideas as far as DIY gifts go for yourself or a friend. Check out our site for ideas on men and women’s jewelry designs.

Monthly Craft Question: Are Dad’s Hard to Craft For?

June 15, 2011 by FaveCrafts

I don’t know about you, but I never have a difficult time either finding or making my mother a gift for Mother’s Day.  My dad, on the other hand – well, that’s another story.  Am I the only one who has trouble finding gift ideas for Dad?  Last month, we asked: Since Dads are challenging to buy for, are they also hard to craft for? What are you giving your Dad for Father’s Day this year?

As usual, we reached out to designers and crafters alike to see what crafty things they were cooking up in their craft rooms.

Here is what they had to say:

Berta Gilholm, FaveCrafts designer
Since we are Grandparents and married for 48 years, we tend to take it easy on Father’s Day. My husband is very hard to buy or make anything for. Our children will send him a funny card and I will make him a card on the computer (every year). It will be original, funny, printed on card stock and maybe a few glued on parts. I search the internet for jokes and feed off of them for ideas only or if something silly happens, I jot down ideas and use them. I have always written my own poetry for cards and do my own for every  occassion. I also bake him his favorite Oatmeal Cookies.

Robin Long of Wildflower Crafts
I am making my husband a waterproof apron. He chose the fabric so that I could make one for our Fall Festival. He likes the fabric alot so I am using it for his apron.

Shannon Bielke of Shaandco.net
I made my mom a wall piece using Kaisercraft’s 12 opening shadowbox frame. It had everything from her wedding picture in 1953 to her children, their wedding pictures, and all the grandchildren in the various openings. The sentiment in one of the openings was “Mom, the heart of our family.”
It was a trip down memory lane for me while making it, and a tribute to my most wonderful, loving mother.
I have always handmade gifts for all of my family, most of my life. For me it’s a way to show them how much I love them, and I always seem to
want to make my mother something extra special!

If you’re still stumped on what to get Dad for Father’s Day, here are some great craft projects from FaveCrafts.
