Autumnal Tie Dye Tablecloth

October 17, 2016 by FaveCrafts Leave a Comment

Today’s post is brought to you by the talented Benetta Strydom for favecrafts.com! This glorious, vintage craft is bursting with stunning, bright colors that will look absolutely awesome spread out on your table. You’ll love this DIY tablecloth that will get you ready for fall in style. It doesn’t get much groovier than this tie dye tablecloth. Personally, I think tie dye is one of the coolest ways to craft, and I wish I did it more often. Fall is my favorite time of year, so this tablecloth design automatically has a special place in my heart.

Here’s what the designer has to say about this project – “Tie and die became popular in the States during the 1960’s, where it was used to add colorful designs to a wide range of garments. Throughout the years, it often disappeared and reappeared on the craft scene. Currently, it is making a huge comeback again, but the focus is no more only on clothing items.”

Tie Dye Tutorial DIY Tablecloth

Materials:

  • 140mm x 200mm unbleached linen
  • One spool of matching thread
  • Tingecor Guarany orange fabric dye powder
  • Acrilex burnt soil fabric paint
  • Meyco stencil of vine leaves
  • A few small sponges ~ use those that were inside medicine bottles
  • Thin string
  • Old sheet to protect the working surface when stenciling
  • 2 cups of salt
  • Pair of rubber gloves
  • Standard scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Stainless steel pot
  • Dressmaker’s marking pencil

How to Tie Dye a Tablecloth

  1. Wash the linen and rinse it thoroughly in cold water to remove any sizing agent from the material. Note: Do not add fabric softener when rinsing the linen.
  2. Allow the linen to dry and iron it thoroughly before continuing with the next step.
  3. Cut off the linen’s selvage, and sew a double fold hem all around the linen. This will prevent the table cloth from fraying.
  4. Iron the hem of the table cloth before preparing the table cloth for tie dying.
  5. Prepare the table cloth for the tie dying:
    1. Lay the table cloth out flat on a surface. Pinch a section of the table cloth between your fingers. Poke it up and tightly tie the string around the bottom of the pinched section. Then tie string all over the pinched section in a random manner and make a secure knot to keep it in place. For this project, it is better to use thin string to create a softer background for the stenciling.Tie Dye TutorialTie Dye Tutorial
    2. Repeat until the whole table cloth has been pinched and tied with string.
      Tie Dye Tutorial
    3. Now you are ready to color the table cloth!
  6. Dissolve the orange dye powder and two cups of salt in a liter of boiling water.
  7. Once the powder and salt have dissolved, add more water to the pot. The pot should have enough water
to completely cover the table cloth. For a deeper orange, you might need two bottles of dye powder.
  8. Bring the colored water to a boil.
  9. Wet the table cloth in cold water, and then add it to the pot with the boiling dye solution.
  10. Keep boiling the pot on the stove for 30 minutes. Stir the pot regularly to make sure that the table cloth gets dyed on all sides.
    1. Note: Wear rubber gloves when following this step. Take the table cloth out of the pot and rinse it in your sink with cold water to remove any excess dye. Keep rinsing until the water is clean and then gently cut off the strings.
  11. Hang the table cloth in a shady area, or toss it into the tumble dryer.
  12. Iron the table cloth thoroughly before continuing with the next step. It will require a lot of ironing to get rid of all the creases.
  13. Add the stenciled design:
    1. Cover the working surface with an old sheet and then put the table cloth flat on the working surface.
    2. Divide the table cloth in four equal parts. Measure the length of the stencil design and use the dressmaker’s pencil to mark where the stencil should be placed.
    3. Position the stencil on the table cloth. Note: Use a few heavy objects to keep the stencil in place while painting.
    4.  Use the burnt soil fabric paint and a sponge to add the first vine leaves to the table cloth.Tie Dye Tutorial
    5. Carefully lift the stencil and move it to the next position. Weigh the stencil down again before adding another set of vine leaves with the paint and the sponge.
    6. Keep adding vine leaves in the same manner. In total, the design was repeated twelve times, 3 times in each quarter. Use a new sponge if the previous one becomes too dirty.Tie Dye Tutorial
  14.  Allow to dry flat for 24 hours.

Free Knitting Patterns for Fall

July 31, 2015 by FaveCrafts Leave a Comment

Okay, so it’s a little difficult to imagine wearing, let alone knitting, a sweater, scarf, shawl, or gloves. Especially when it is nearly July and the temperatures are soaring quickly into the 90’s. But all those things take time to make people! Before you know it, school is going to be starting and the leaves will be turning colors, and then panic mode will set in because you didn’t get a head start. Never fear, though, I compiled the biggest list of free knitting patterns for fall. You’re going to feel so cozy in these knit sweaters, homemade knit scarves, and fuzzy mittens.

Warm, homemade sweaters are going to be your favorite thing to make this summer because by the time you get done with all these easy sweater patterns, it will be time to wear them! All of your friends and family will be begging you to make them one of the fun and stylish knits for the fall instead of spending money at the store. You can get unique colors and patterns that match your personality and all of your winter wear. I don’t know about you, but I hate mismatched coats and accessories. I think the worst that has ever happened is a purple jacket with a red and black scarf, and green gloves. Yeah. Nothing matched. I really wish I had this awesome list of fall and winter knitting patterns, so I could have been strutting around with some stylish warmth.

So don’t make the same mistake as me. You have plenty of time before the season starts to change, but there are so many options that you won’t know where to begin. Let me help you. I would start with simple scarf patterns. In my mind, they are the fastest to get done. So if you’re knitting for more than just yourself, then these are the first and easiest thing to get done. Next, I would knit an easy hat for winter. That way, you get use out of it for both seasons, and they will look so cute with everything you wear!

So get your needles ready for this fall knitting spree because you’re going to need to start early for all these free knitting patterns!

A Unique Spin on Thanksgiving Table Decorations

November 15, 2013 by AllFreeHolidayCrafts Leave a Comment

Thanksgiving day can be daunting. There is food to prepare, people to greet, and decorations to make. When you start working on your table decor, why not try something new? Step out of the box this year and leave those typical turkey decorations behind. This year, AllFreeHolidayCrafts will help you save your guests from the same old, tired turkey decor.  With leafy table runners, creative place cards, and decorative napkins each place setting will be a work of art. You can also create things like these Give Thanks Jars with recycled jars, or everyone’s favorite: mason jars. They make a great table centerpiece and will complement the rest of your table decor.

Faux Leather Leaves

Table Runner Patterns

These table runners will make you wish that you had these decorating ideas last year. I can already hear the “oohs” and “aahs” as everyone gathers around your dining room table. These Thanksgiving table runners are a great alternative to your regular table decor because they bring a fall feel. Your home will be warmed by these fun leaf patterns. The “Faux Leather Leaves” table runner is a personal favorite of mine because of the textured look it brings to the table. For more table runner tips check out the Simple Fall Leaf Table Runner and Thanksgiving Word Art Table Runner.

DIY Napkins and Napkin Rings

No table is complete without napkins, and no napkin is complete without a napkin ring. For this Thanksgiving, dress up your usual napkins with these fall crafts. The Burst of Autumn Napkin Rings are a pretty accent to your already decked-out table. I promise that the preserved leaves on these napkin rings will outshine any turkey-themed table decor. Continue decorating with what looks like a designer napkin, the Fall Dinner Napkins and the Decorative Napkin Rings will accent theme perfectly.

Thanksgiving Place Cards

Your table is nearly complete with all of these fall decorations. Now you are merely missing place cards or tags. You can forget the typical holiday decor with these contemporary Pine Cone Flowers. The Pine Cone Flowers serve as a great stand for your place cards. Place them in the center of  each person’s plate for a cute fall accent. If you prefer the more traditional, these Custom Chalkboard Place Tags are a great, but still unique, option. The kids will love making these chalkboard tags with you. The fun doesn’t end here. You can also combine your place card with a gift bag. The Thanksgiving Place Card and Favor Bags are an affordable option. I know my guests love this little something extra on the table.

How will you decorate your table this Thanksgiving?

Sew an Eiffel Tower Heat Bag from A Spoonful of Sugar: National Sewing Month 2013

September 28, 2013 by AllFreeSewing 41 Comments

It’s Day Twenty-Eight of National Sewing Month! Too see the daily blog posts, projects of the day, and more National Sewing Month details, click here.

National Sewing Month 2013

Hi, we are Lisa and Sarah, a mother and daughter team who blog over at A Spoonful of Sugar where we share lots of free sewing tutorials, recipes, and crafty projects.

Eiffel-Tower-Heat-Bag-Main

One of our most popular tutorials is our Winter Warmers Lavender Heat Bags. We love to add a French twist to our projects, so we designed an Eiffel Tower Heat Bag Cover. Featuring an appliqued Eiffel Tower, it is a pillowcase style cover with an internal flap that hides the heat pack from view. Simply heat the pack in the microwave and then carefully place it in the cover for use. The cover can be laundered which extends the life of the heat pack.

An Eiffel Tower Lavender Heat Bag would make a great gift.

Materials:

• Fat Quarter of small floral print

• Fat Quarter of green hounds tooth check

• Small piece of blue gingham

• Small scrap of red print

• Applique film such as Steam a Seam

• Black thread

• White thread

• Small pieces of ribbon (optional)

• Fat quarter of white homespun

• Rice or wheat

• Dried lavender (optional)

Eiffel-Tower-Template

Eiffel-Tower-Heat-Bag

1. Cut fabrics:

Floral print – 11 ½ x 6 ½ inches (front cover)

Green hounds tooth print – 2 ½ x 6 ½ inch (cuff); 6 ½ x 15 ½ inch (back cover)

White homespun – cut 2 rectangles measuring 6 x 12 inches

2. Trace the Eiffel Tower and flag from the template onto paper backing of applique film. Cut out leaving a ½ inch clearance around the design. Iron the Eiffel Tower onto the back of the blue gingham, following manufacturer’s instructions. Cut out outline. Iron the flag shape onto the back of the red print and cut out outline. Position the Eiffel Tower and flag on the blue floral print. Fuse in place following manufacturer’s directions. Top stitch around the shapes three times using black thread. Try not to stitch along the same line to give a sketched appearance.

3. Fold the cuff in half lengthwise. Press. Position the raw edges of the cuff along the top edge of the floral front. Stitch in place using ¼ inch seam allowance. Overlock/serge raw edge. Press. Topstitch 1/8 inch from seam.

4. Optional: decorate the Eiffel tower with a piece of ribbon stitched in place. Cut a 2 ½ inch piece of ribbon/tape folded in half, and stitched to the right long edge to create a tag.

Eiffel-Tower-Heat-Bag-2

5. With the backing fabric, fold under ¼ inch along one short edge. Press. Fold under another ¼ inch. Press. Stitch folded edge in place. Position the backing fabric and the Eiffel Tower front with right sides facing and bottom edges aligned. Fold the top of the backing fabric over to front (as shown). Stitch along bottom and sides. Clip corners. Turn out the right way and press.

Eiffel-Tower-Heat-Bag-3

6. Position the white homespun rectangles together. Stitch around all four sides, leaving a 3 inch gap in one short side. Turn out the right way. Fill with rice or wheat, and lavender. Stitch opening closed.

Picking Projects for Fall: Apple Crafts and Recipes

September 11, 2013 by AllFreeKidsCrafts Leave a Comment

‘Tis the season for picking! Fall is all about that juicy, round fruit that starts with an A, which means that crafting a ton of apple projects over the next few months is totally allowed. Apple crafts are amazingly versatile, and they appeal to crafters of every age. We use these adorable snacks to help teach little ones the alphabet, and they double as amazingly festive fall crafts. There’s so much more where these fresh finds came from, so if you’re itching for more apple, we’ve got you covered.

2. Apple Cupcakes
3. Apple Scented Cloud Dough
4. Apple Jar
5. The Easiest Apple Craft
6. Apple Pretzelsstring-worm-apple
7. Pom Pom Apple Tree
8. Melted Crayon Apples
9. Paper Apple Garland
10. Paper Bag Apples
11. Adorable Apple Jar
12. Apple Krispies
13. Cost Free Apple Tree
14. Plastic Bottle Apple Gift

PLUS: Wormy Apple Craft

I adore how all of these crafts are modeled after the same object, but they’re all unique and fabulously different. From the easiest fall crafts for kids that are made from household items to rustic decor you’ll love to show off, this group’s got it all.

Fall Crafts for Kids to Gift

Whether you’d like to say thanks to your teacher, give a nod to a friend, or make someone smile, there’s an app(le) for that! Gift the Apple Jar as a present in and of itself, or use the Plastic Bottle Apple Gift or Paper Bag Apples as a way to wrap up fall treats. If you want to take your apple accents even further, wrap a gift with Apple Stamped Paper, which looks fantastic but can be made by preschoolers. While winter is “the season of giving,” I like to think that fall isn’t far behind. After all, who needs a specified month to put a smile on a friend’s face?

Fall Crafts for Kids to Eat

A kid’s gotta eat, so the food might as well be adorable! Snack on Apple Cupcakes or Apple Krispies for a fun fall treat after school. If you’ve been apple picking and want to cook with your finds, try making Slow Cooker Cake Mix Apple Cobbler, Simple Slow Cooker Apple Pie, or Slow Cooker Apple Bread. Help Mom make it in the morning, and it’ll be ready to devour when you come home from school.

What’s your favorite way to work with apples?

Link Love: Super Sweet Candy Corn Crafts

October 4, 2012 by FaveCrafts 3 Comments

Fall is great for a lot of reasons but if you have a sweet tooth, it’s absolutely killer (in a good way). Candy corn is one of my absolute favorite treats and and now is the time when you can’t go to the grocery store without grabbing a bag. In fact, some of my favorite autumn memories involve those sugary little orange, yellow and white candy triangles. This seasonal delight only comes out during the fall season, so it’s no surpise that crafters are celebrating its return with some candy corn-themed crafts.

If you’re looking for crafty ideas, look no further than that orange bag in your cabinet. Use actual candy to create Candy Corn Earrings. Colorful beads turn this into a pretty jewelry craft that anyone can wear. You can wear your handmade earrings before and after Halloween because, let’s face it, candy corn is a hit all year long. Also, Halloween costumes for kids can get expensive, so stay home instead and create a Sugary Sweet Candy Corn Costume for your favorite little one.

A bowl of candy corn always seems to disappear within minutes of a party, so accent your space with some sweet decor crafts that are sure to last all night long. Fill a Candy Corn Bowl with treats for a festive touch of color this Halloween. This is also a great bowl option when handing out candy to trick-or-treaters. While you’re at it, stick a few Candy Corn Friends on your table and take your party to the next level.

Treat yourself to a crafty afternoon and rediscover your love of all things autumn. Make a few candy corn-inspired crafts this season – your dentist will surely thank you for it later.

  2. Candy Corn Paper Pennant from Live and Love Out Loud
  3. Halloween Candy Corn Charm from A Splendid Assemblage
  4. Giant Candy Corn from Zakka Life
  5. Candy Corn Shoes from Dream {a Little} BIGGER
