Crafting Creates Communities

October 19, 2011 by TheCrochetCrowd

I love when communities come together and no one is holding fire torches or pitch forks. It reminds me how amazing our Facebook groups are at The Crochet Crowd and AllFreeCrochet.

Today, I happened to notice a comment that suggested to me that a woman writing a comment sounded a bit lonely and was needing a friend. I sat back and thought.

“If my hunch is right, what can I do to help her?”

The woman is a great crocheter and she’s in a group of amazing other crocheters… maybe she just needs someone to connect with.

So this thought pattern led me to post a comment about making new friends. I am still in disbelief about how many people were interested in creating friendships. Some people got so excited they made so many friends they got a locked out from making more Facebook friends for 48 hours. I never thought Facebook had a spam protector like YouTube.

This is a strong reminder to me that “we need each other”. I love when flukes like this happen. Many people had a great day today over a very simple idea. It’s amazing how little it takes to make a difference.

What Are You Working On Now?

September 14, 2011 by FaveCrafts

Physics, particularly the advances in quantum physics seen in the later part of the 20th century, tell us that time is an illusion: particles can interact forward or backwards in time, or even interfere with themselves.  However, taking all this too seriously will inevitably lead to missing appointments, trains, and meals.  It’s good to keep your mind on the present, especially when dealing with crafts that involve sharp objects.

We went on Facebook to ask our readers what was keeping them busy in the here-and-now, and today we share some of our favorite responses.

There’s plenty of holiday spirit going around on Facebook right now, as evidenced by crafters like Pamela, below:

And some are thinking even further ahead than that, like Fabrizio Martelluci, who clearly doesn’t share my family’s longtime tradition of rushing to send out cards on December 24.

Krigami, for those who don’t know, is the art of folding and cutting paper.  You probably know it from paper dolls like these:

Kami Randall Mullens, below, has more domestic things on her mind, and she was kind enough to share a photo!

Reprinted for your convenience, here’s Kami’s excellent skirt!

Of course, some people are interested in clothing of a different kind:

Looks a little like a monster from Super Mario Brothers, I think: be careful about letting that baby near pipes, Venus flytraps, or fireballs.

What do you think of our readers’ crafts?   What are YOU working on right now?

3 Supplies That Every Crafter Needs

August 26, 2011 by FaveCrafts

Preparation is the key to success, and the key to preparation is having the right tools.  For instance, if you want to make an omlette, you need some eggs and a willingness to break them, if you want to be Batman then you need a utility belt and a butler, and if you want to make a Shakespearean farce then you need identical twins, cross-dressing, and puns.  However, most of you out in our corner of the blogosphere are more interested in crafting, so what are the essential tools every craft-fan needs in their arsenal?  We put the question to you on facebook, and here are a few of the best answers we received!

When we started looking at all the comments, a pattern started to emerge very quickly

The humble cutting tool, mainstay of the kitchen and the medieval battlefield, was almost invariably the first or second thing on the minds of our readers when it came to the craft table.  With scissors occupying such a high position in the crafting hierarchy of needs, you’ll want to be sure to own the best pair for your particular fancy.  Most fabric projects call for a pair of scissors like these.  Lower qualities scissors derive their cutting power from the shearing action between the two blades rather than sharpness, but you’ll want sharp and heavy scissors that can go through even delicate fabrics without any tearing.  Embroidery scissors are  narrow and sharp-pointed, perfect for snipping and trimming.  For paper crafts, a pair of good general purpose scissors like these will get the job done, but you can get more selective based on the sort of work you’re doing.

Personally, I’m not willing to do anything more stressful than getting up from my chair without a good cup of coffee, but it’s clear from the feedback we received that adhesives are the #2 most mentioned crafting item.  A lot of you clearly appreciate the convenience and speed that comes from a hot glue gun, not to mention the opportunity to make “Zap! Zap!” noises and pretend you’re in a 1970’s sci-fi movie.  Beyond that, there’s a whole plethora of glues out there for different projects, so check labels to see what’s best for the project at hand.
Some general glue rules of thumb:

  • Don’t glue your thumb to anything
  • Look for a non-toxic glue when possible, especially when planning crafts for kids.
  • Always be careful when using super-powerful adhesives.  Generally these should only be used in well-ventilated areas, and be sure to lay down newspaper, or some other covering to protect surfaces from being damaged by errant droplets.

It was fearless crafter Stacy Palmer who best summed up the thought process that was going on in so many of our reader’s minds

Of course, with so many different crafts in the world, exactly what kind of scrap people prefer to play with was very different.  In our extremely informal poll the most popular choices were paper (including cardstock) and fabric.

Beyond that, many of our readers wanted to stress the importance of intangibles

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

Do you agree with our respondents?  What items would you add or subtract?

Joseph… and the Technicolour Catherine Wheel Stitch

August 10, 2011 by TheCrochetCrowd

Guys know how to crochet too!
Joseph, a strong follower of The Crochet Crowd has completed his Catherine Wheel Stitch Blanket

Joseph Cichon III recently celebrated his personal acheivement on this magnificent Catherine Wheel Stitch Pattern that can be found in video format on The Crochet Crowd.

Joseph is 43 years old and attempted Crocheting when he was 18 years old. He worked on the same blanket doing single crochet for about 1 year and gave up thinking the craft wasn’t for him. After 19 years, he pulled out the blanket again and a close friend showed him how to double crochet. The Double Crochet opened his new love for crocheting as we can all agree doing double crochet speeds our work up dramatically.
You could almost say Joseph was obsessed but I think hard core crafters can relate to his enthusiasm and personal drive. Only 9 months later, he had just completed his 14th blanket! Can you image that?
One could strongly assume that he mastered the skills of double crochet and heard a rumour that he could find more patterns online. He never used YouTube as a source of information but accidentally stumbled onto Michael Sellick’s Crochet Courses known as The Crochet Crowd. Michael Sellick, known as Mikey, spread his enthusiasm and Joseph caught the opportunities to expand himself into other patterns and ideas.
Like many people, they have found the power to self learn at their own speed using videos on YouTube. Joseph has subscriptions for Bethintx1 and tjw1963 on YouTube and gets updates when new patterns are released. He loves the challenges of the new ideas that are presented on a frequent basis.
So what keeps Joseph going? Simple… he has three projects on the go… When he gets bored of the colours or pattern, he switches off to one of his other projects for a change in past.
The blanket you see in this photograph was gifted to Joseph’s Sister In-Law due to being really exceptional during a greiving period that Joseph recently went through. Joseph wanted to repay her kindness and love with something truly from the heart.

Cinema Saturdays: How to Make Paper Beads
