Fall International Quilt Market 2013 Recap #2: Talking Trends with Our Favorite Companies

November 7, 2013 by FaveQuilts

Quilt Market Recap 2

During our time at Quilt Market, we found that some of the best source of inspiration, as well as the most helpful look into current quilting trends came from companies. You’ve seen many of their bundles on our site, so don’t miss this recap of what our favorite companies are doing this year:

Birch Fabrics

Any time we get our hands on something from Birch Fabrics, we prepare ourselves to take a trip to a beautiful place, and their booth was no exception. We met up with the very talented Melissa Lunden, who did an amazing job on patterns like Window View and Break Dance. Woodland creatures were a big trend at Market, and Birch is surely in the forefront with patterns that popped on everything from full patterns to clothing to some of the funnest furniture we’ve ever seen.

Shannon Fabrics

If there was one booth we never wanted to leave, it had to be the fun, rustic farmhouse set up by the talented team at Shannon Fabrics. Their one-of-a-kind cuddle fabrics were transformed into plants, animals, and quilts that looked absolutely perfect for a snuggle. Our readers are big fans of strip quilting, and Shannon shows that the method is going to be a big part of 2013 and 2014.

RJR Fabrics

During our visit to RJR Fabrics, we were delighted to see more adorable animal prints with our favorite creatures like foxes and owls brightened up with pastels and delicate florals. There was purse patterns and dress designs ladies of many ages will surely fall in love, and we felt inspired by the innovative ways their designers used these collections to make graphic quilts with real modern appeal.

Aurifil

We didn’t win anything, but it was a real pleasure playing this thread golf course showing off the versatile polyester and cotton threads offered by Aurifil. The creative look of their booth exemplified just how large their collection is, so quilters can really focus on embellishment and detail.

Camelot Fabrics

Another booth that was so hard to walk away from was that of Camelot Fabrics who put their own twist on the animal trend with sweet bird patterns. These fabric lines are going to be a big hit in the world of baby quilts.

Anna Griffin

When it came down to elegance in all forms, Anna Griffin is one of the best choices. They gave the animal fabrics trend a chic upgrade and mesmerized with fabrics that had feminine flair and an adventurous sense of exoticism.

One booth that really got attention was that of the fun team at Timeless Treasures. Not only did they offer a wide variety of designs, but showed some of the amazing ways these fabrics could be used to make incredibly designs. It’s no wonder they won the Best Booth Award for Creativity (and they sure know how to entertain)!

Riley Blake

There was a collection for every quilter here. The Riley Blake Designs team showed off patterns filled with bright colors. Their designers took the fabric to the next level and used it to make just about anything with a stylish balance between prints and solids.

A group of amazing designers interpreted each of the colorful collections from Art Gallery Fabrics into stylish booths that will inspire your inner home decor designer. It was like we were taking a whole series of vacations just by walking down a row!

New Fabric Line Available at Michaels Stores

June 29, 2013 by FaveCraftsBlog

Starting today, you can walk into your local Michaels Stores and get your hands on some fabric for your next craft project. Michaels announces the addition of pre-cut craft fabric to the thousands of creative products available in its stores, providing customers with one-stop shopping for their DIY projects.

Michaels New Fabric Line

The pre-cut fabric, includes cotton, canvas, burlap, felt, faux fur, crushed velvet and tulle, and will be available in a variety of sizes from a half-yard to 2 yards. The pre-cut fabric will be carried in the majority of U.S. and Canada stores.

“With the addition of crafting fabric to our mix, our customers can find everything they need for their projects in one store,” said Michaels Executive Vice President of Category Management Philo Pappas. “And because the fabrics are pre-cut, customers can simply select the size they need and be on their way – no waiting for measuring and cutting.”

Michaels.com and Michaels Pinterest Boards feature project ideas that use fabric, including throw pillows, lamp shades, chair seat covers, and bracelets. Laminated burlap, a Michaels limited exclusive, can be fed through most home printers to add personalized messages and images to fabric projects.

Other crafting fabrics available at Michaels include costume silk, glittered tulle, sequined tulle, faux Sherpa, silky fleece and embossed alligator and snake prints.

Michaels also sells a complete line of sewing supplies, including needles, thread, fabric shears, bobbins and notions.

How Fabric Is Made: Visiting the Troy Fabric Warehouse

December 22, 2011 by FaveQuilts

All of our readers on FaveQuilts.com and AllFreeSewing.com adore fabric. We ooh and ahhh over it at the craft store, rub it between our fingers to feel the grain, and stash unsteady mountains of it in our closets. We might even follow fabric designers on Twitter or read their blogs to hear all about their newest projects. But most of us have no idea how a fabric designer’s vision makes its way from the mind’s eye to a bolt in the local quilt shop. I certainly had never thought about fabric manufacturing until I got a chance to visit the Troy Corporation warehouse last week.

After we met at Quilt Market in October, Dorothy Troy (who owns Troy with her husband Terry) invited me (Jessica, editor of FaveQuilts.com) to visit the Troy warehouse in Chicago. Troy both distributes fabrics from a number of well-known fabric companies and puts out its own family of fabrics called Riverwoods. While I was at the warehouse, I had the privilege of seeing how fabric is made from start to finish.

Dorothy began by showing me the different ways that designers present their art. Some designers, such as Marcia Derse, create hand-dyed fabric samples, while others like Pearl Krush begin by painting their designs on paper.

If the original design is a hand-dyed fabric sample, the fabric printer replicates the design in a paint and paper sample:

Once the fabric is printed, it comes to distributors like Troy in huge rolls:

Rolls-of-fabric

A machine then rapidly wraps the rolls of fabric into bolts:

And then the bolts are wrapped in plastic and stacked on shelves so they can be sent to your local fabric stores. Troy uses shopping carts to move fabric around the factory. I thought they were so cute!

The life of a fat quarter is a little different. Here you can see carts full of fat quarters from the Earth Dancing and The Gathering lines by Mary Fisher and the latest line from Marcia Derse. The fat quarters get packed into boxes to be sent to fabric shops:

Or sometimes they get tied up into adorable little bundles like this one from Marcia Derse’s Shoreline collection. This is my favorite bundle!

Of course we all know what happens to the fabric after it gets to your fabric shop. You buy it, take it home, and hide it deep in your fabric stash until you unearth it a decade later. Just kidding! Ideally, it gets made into a beautiful quilt. The entire Troy office was hung with quilts made from the Riverwoods lines. Here are a few of my favorites:

Did you know how fabric was made before you read this post? What is your favorite new fabric line?
